Never thought I would live to see the day a grown man blowing his nose and sniffing all the way in the cinema!
Is my husband sneaking out to the cinema again without me?

Re: Movie recommendations?

District 9 was excellent. I love how the movie makes you shift sympathies from the humans (who we're naturally inclined to side with) to the aliens as it goes on. By the end, I was nearly rooting for the aliens come back and deal with things Independence Day-style in the sequel. The special effects were nearly-flawless, too.

Re: Movie recommendations?

I thought District 9 was awesome, one of the best movies I've ever seen.

I felt the pacing was good, not constant action but also no dull parts. Most importantly I felt it was engrossing, it kept you interested but also drew you in emotionally.

A big part for me was also the fact that it's set in South Africa, starring South Africans & they speak English / Afrikaans / Sotho in the movie, it made me quite homesick.

What surprised me was I watched the film with my cousin who is Swiss & thought maybe he wouldn't have appreciated it but he loved it.

On a funny note; there were english subtitles when the actors spoke afrikaans but they didn't translate the swear words (obviously), at one point I wanted to translate for my cousin and he stops me & says "I know what kak means, I've figured it out from when you say it".

Antichrist

This is probably going to get zero answers but has anyone managed to sit through this and can help me out? I tried watching it but fell asleep. Maybe I'm missing the subliminal artistry of the film

Re: Movie recommendations?

As winter season is approaching and as we all live near the alpes the following is an awesome film (set in peru btw but close enough).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Touching-Void-DVD-Simon-Yates/dp/B0001B3ZI2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1253876745&sr=1-3

Other than that I want to see Moon. If anyone knows how or where I can see this in Zurich please let me know.

I haven't seen Antichrist, but all Lars Von Trier movies are basically misery porn, figuratively speaking. If sadness and misery are your thing, every scene is leading up to it, and money shots are frequent in the form of something tragic happening or somebody crying.

The fact that there's apparently hardcore sex in his new movie is weirdly fitting.

Re: Movie recommendations?

Can't believe I'd not seen "Monster's Ball" till a couple of days ago. Pretty well paced and shot; excellent details. Directed by Marc Forster, a Swiss. Very good performances from Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry. The boy who plays her son is too cute.

Re: Antichrist

Ah that explains why I fell asleep then. Admittedly I went to see this film because it has Willem Dafoe in it. And I was thinking what a great artistic horror masterpiece it was going to be...

I have tried watching Lars Von Trier stuff and have given up after a few minutes.

IMO it is just Arty-Farty rubbish...And I don't mean that his films are too intellectual, I like films that make you thing. His films just seem to be too "clever" for their own good.

Now I avoid his films like the plague.

Please suggest some Hollywoods Hits, you have recently watched

Hi , all I hope this is right place for my post, though I was confused if I should post it to" Entertainment and dining", but I think, it is the right platform as my post is related to FREE TIME.

Well, I do not have much to do here except some shopping(poor hubby), cooking and waiting for hubby.... etc
Though I am not a buff of movies but they can be a good time pass if you know the good ones .
Can you please suggest me some Hit , Horror(), Thriller, Suspense , Action movies, (yes I am a female, really do not like Action movie, but love Horror movies), Please do not name any Romantic movie(poor me) as I am going to watch them with hubby but he does not prefer Romantic movies( )and this is the main reason he hates BOLLYWOOD movies and is great fan of Hollywood action movies.though I do not prefer to sit for three hrs in front of the idiot box and waste my time , but ... .... if you are sitting in the arms of your hubby.... ok... can be bearable..
Please suggest me some good Hollywood movies you have recently watched.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Movie recommendations

Sanju, did you know you can borrow DVDs free of charge at your nearest library?
As for Hollywood hits, try 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' - it's hilarious.
'The Illusionist', a mystery drama.
'The Shining' - suspenseful and scary.

Were you thinking of old hits or new ones?

Sorry, didn't understand what you meant by 'links'.
Did you mean like this:

Have you found a (Gemeinde Bibliothek) library near where you live?

I would suggest 'Charade'
Cary Grant film and has a bit of everything.

Apart from this, maybe you should try slacker movies like Saw. They are really good
