Just finished watching Mesrine: Death Wish (part 1 that is) and am sitting down to enjoy the second installment - Mesrine: Public Enemy Highly recommended if you're a fan of heist/crime films and Vincent Cassel is just brilliant!
Mesrine is a wonderful movie - I love Cassel ... another good French movie is Seraphine!

Holmes was a disappointment for me too.

An education, Up in the Air, The Blind side, Hangover are so far among my favorite movies for 2009. A serious man could go in the list too The messenger is pretty good too.

a recommendation for non-English movie from less known countries and regions: Children of heaven, Broken wings, The Syrian bride, Walking on water, The edge of heaven (Auf der anderen Seite)

Just finished watching 'Hachiko: A dog's story' and I don't mind admitting that I wept like a baby seriously a very touching movie about loyalty and devotion.

Re: Movie recommendations

most films by the Cohen brothers are great. Miller's crossing is a classic.
Chopper is worth a watch. Eric Bana is underrated, as both a comedian and an actor

I second that. AVOID THIS MOVIE unless you are planning on clearing your tear ducts. I nearly cried my eyeballs out last night and my confused dog was awoken from his sleep by a *ahem* very weepy owner.

There are some very good movies from Japan and Korea, depending if you like the horror, exploitation, or just strange movies.

Hong Kong for some good action movies. But not seen any recently

Thailand has movies with Tony Jaa which are amazing.

Just watched it as well, Good choice in a movie, and good acting by Gere, but OMG... Is that a tear jerker! Certainly a good movie... Love the loyalty story line, and a true story. Thumbs up!

I have.

If anyone is interested in a foreign movie (but with English subtitles), I was blown away by a recent movie, Bodyguards and Assasins. Story is about how the famous Dr Sun Yat Sen (a famous Chinese political and revolutionary leader) trip to come to Hong Kong in 1905, then a colony of the British to plan a revolution and overthrow the corrupt Qing Dynasty.

A lot of characters in the movie are real historical figures.

Re: Movie recommendations

I wholeheartedly suggest Crazy Heart which is the movie that Jeff Bridges won the Best Actor Oscar for this year. He plays an aging country music star...great music, good performances all around, and a wonderful plot. I've always thought Jeff Bridges was one of Hollywood's best, and he confirmed it with this performance. For other Americans out there (especially western Americans) this movie had some great four corners area settings and just exuded gritty Americana in a way that few movies manage to do. Not the glitzy, Hollywood kind, but real small town, rural American personalities and settings.

Totally agree. I thought Crazy Heart was really good.

Yup, I thought Crazy Heart was excellent - I'm a London city-boy and I felt I got a real sense of being a washed up country music star in the States. I feel that not only was Bridges acting top class but also the direction and cinematography.

Sounds like a movie I should stay away from. My eyeballs might not survive such a bruising and flooding.

Not a fan of "The General". It would be an enjoyable film, if it wasn't loosely based on a true story, and if it wasn't glorifying a man who was without a doubt, a thug and a scumbag. The movie makes him out to be some sort of hero for the working class dubs, when in fact, he was just another run of the mill criminal, who made the mistake of crossing the IRA. "The General" and "Ordinary Decent Criminal" are two films we could have done without. Both worthless, in my opinion.

Re: Movie recommendations

Last night at Rex saw Up in the Air - with George Clooney. One of those movies you could give an 8/10 or a 4/10 depending on your perspective.

The theme is little more sad/depressing than some of the reviews I've read. There are light-hearted parts, and with Clooney there has to be a romantic involvement(though for once he gets the short end of the straw on that score), but overall it's a reality check for many people in the current climate : be thankful if you are employed!

Re: Movie recommendations

Last night we watched Bounty Hunter, starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerald Butler. It was one of the worse films I've ever seen (and I'm not averse to chick flicks), the acting was amateurish, plot completely convoluted and it was full of cliches. However the film's cardinal sin was that it just wasn't funny, I spent more time cringing than I did grinning.

The romantic comedy genre is a pretty easy one, you can have a ridiculous plot, unknown actors but if you can make your audience laugh you're home and dry.

2/10
