Re: Movie recommendations

Does anybody else think that Inception is eerily like a visit to IKEA? You go up and down levels within the labyrinth; building a fantasy world in your own head. Nice at first but before too long you find yourself wondering if another reality exists and where in hell the exit is!

Great film, by the way.

Haven't seen the movie and probably wont now. Instead I will make a trip to Ikea. Again.

Re: Movie recommendations

So I saw "Inception" last weekend.
And don't tear me apart...but I didn't quite like it so much.

<<Maybe spoilers ahead, so text is white. Select to read. >>

Reasons :

1. Leonardo's character : Now this guy has played some awesome characters in the past. Basketball Diaries, Catch Me if You Can, Blood Diamond and so on. Somehow, the character in this movie was...well...dull.

2. The Director : When someone has done "Dark Knight" and handled characters like Ledger's Joker or Eckhart's Harvey Dent...your expectations tend to go up. And there wasn't really anything "wow" in this one.

3. The Story : The story once again, was, normal. There was not much story anyways. Just dreams in dreams and so on...

4. The Dreams : I guess, this was the only good thing. However, at some points I was just bored. "Okay lets go into a dream in a dream in a dream...and lets pull him into this dream and throw him out..." Didn't quite compute.
And things didn't quite snyc up at times. Like towards the end, when the Fischer guy (Murphy) gets shot by Mal (Marion)...how does he get pulled into her dream ???

For the same reason Saito went to Limbo when he died of his wounds in the dream. If someone dies in a dream under heavy sedation, that's where they go.

It's not exactly "her" dream, since she's dead, but of Cobb's projection of her. The reason for this is that Cobb's projections had been invading the other dreams up to that point (the train, etc.) So Limbo was populated by his subconcious since he was an expert in controlling it (though not so much after the trauma of Mal's death). Still, he didn't get lost like Saito and Fischer eventually did. That's why it was his responsibility to save Saito afterwards.

And for those who want a nifty chart explaining all the dreams in Inception, I've attached it. The only thing that's slightly incorrect is "Cobb's Dream". I would call it "Limbo populated by Cobb's subconcious", but that's just me.

I thought it was spectacular entertainment. I don't really agree that DiCaprio's character was dull, but I realize it may seem that way after only one viewing. Seeing it a second time really brings into perspective the tragedy of what happened with his wife and it hits harder. The first time you kind of skip over it because you're still trying to follow the damn plot.

Hmmm...maybe I will feel the same way once I have the dvd and see it at my leisure.

Re: Movie recommendations

A bit late, but saw "Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland" recently.
Quite well done, IMO.

Loved the Hatter and the Cheshire cat characters.
And the visuals of Wonderland are just cool.

A good Weekend watch.

"Moon" (2009), directed by Duncan Jones, starring Sam Rockwell and featuring Kevin Spacey's voice in a computer/robot. Good stuff.

Re: Movie recommendations

After seeing the premier of Restrepo, discussing with Tim Hetherington and Sgt. Brendan O'Bryne then reading WAR by Sebastian Junger

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DjqR6OucBc

I am eagerly awaiting the release of the Tillman story on Aug 20th

Quote:
As the release date approaches -- the film will premiere in Los Angeles and New York on August 20 -- those elements are becoming a bit clearer and more intriguing. The Weinstein Company sent the Huffington Post two previously unseen letters written by Tillman's father at the peak of frustration with the army's investigation into his son's death. The notes, penned to Brigadier General Gary M. Jones (the man spearheading the investigation) as well as the Senate Armed Services Committee (which oversaw Jones's work), paint a picture of a man increasingly convinced that a massive conspiracy was emerging around the death of his son.

After seeing Restrepo I felt ashamed at myself for buying the Hurt Locker DVD, why glamourize what there is out there to watch in documentary? The truth is alarming enough it doesn't need to be sensationalized any further.

Finally saw INCEPTION... Awesome movie... been long time i saw something like this... but i still feel memento was better... may i need to watch inception again to pick up something i might have missed... But inception is easily the best movie this year and far better than avatar which i felt was like a video game (uber grafics but no brain)
eah, I agree... and I was also thinking on going again. It was cool going with some friends from the EF and the CS the last time, thanks Justine for organizing. I wonder if there is another group going to watch that, I would join again.

Re: Movie recommendations

Erm...I think the point of this thread was to draw attention to good films that people might not have heard about. Hence the title: "Movie recommendations"

Not to go on and on about blockbusters. So could people please stop going on about Inception in this thread?

If you are that keen on Inception why not create it's own unique thread?
