Re: Movie recommendations?

Brief Encounter is a great black and white, esp if you want to laugh at the old fashioned English politeness and "oh darling I do love you so...". Dearie me...

Re: Movie recommendations?

A few relatively recent films that I found quite memorable, apart from the already mentioned Little Miss Sunshine and No Country for Old Men, were (in no particular order):

Gone Baby Gone
Junebug
Breaking and Entering
Children of Men
Michael Clayton
Babel
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Crash
Broken Flowers
Syriana
Oldboy

Hope you enjoy at least some of them!

Re: Movie recommendations?

One of my all-time favorites is Frida. I can watch it over and over again. Salma Hayek was amazing in this film and the music is incredible.

Also, Across the Universe: my husband left after the first five minutes when they started singing but I'm glad I stuck it out. It really brought these old Beatles songs to life again. I've got the CD in my car.

Sutter, The 40 Year Old Virgin had me in stitches. Great movie!

Recently saw Run Fat Boy Run -which was pretty funny as well.

Re: Movie recommendations?

If you like a gory horror then the recent '28 weeks later' is superb(It's the sequel). There are a couple of holes in the story-line but most horrors do.
This also has that hand-held camera effect which magnifies the suspense at times.
Let the first 5 minutes pass then it's fast paced action and you're on the edge of your seat the whole way.

If you like fantasy and fiction movies I would recommend from my side: '' The Lord of the Ring'' trilogy and perhaps Harry Potter. Then my favourite would be Marvel Comics group action hero movies sequels e.g. Batman, Spiderman, Superman, X-Man, Fantastic 4, Hellboy... just to name a few.
Lord of the Rings is one I have seen, had to watch them having read the books umpteen times.. loved the movies but the books are the best.

Re: Movie recommendations?

i'm surprised no one has mentioned "closer," "the inside man" and "sin city," all fairly recent films.

as for enternal sunshine, sometimes its about willing suspension of disbelief. for me, the cleverness of it all wasn't all that important. rather, it was how we sometimes struggle to hold on to what's important, and what's important could be as precious little as memories.

Re: Movie recommendations?

Donnie Darko and Butterfly Effect - two dark movies that really make you think.

Million Dollar Baby - great movie!

Boys Don't Cry - super movie! Hilary Swank was great in it.

Re: Movie recommendations?

Awhile ago, I worked my way through all the movies I hadn't seen on IMDB's top 250. While they're not new there are some definite must see's in there.
