I would definetly define "The Holiday" as a chick flick. Great if you like that sort of thing.

Re: Movie recommendations

I just went to see Die Kinder vom Napf, a lovely documentary portrait of everyday rural life in the mountains, filmed over the course of a year.

My Swiss German is nowhere near good enough for me to have understood everything but it doesn't really matter - the film is visually stunning and the theme is universal enough for the language not to be too much of an issue. Highly recommended.

I saw the girl with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo last week. I thought I wouldn't like it as I had already red the book. If you can't make it to the cinema get it when it comes out on dvd.Great film.

I saw the swedish version and thought the actress playing Lisbeth was absolutely brilliant. I fear that this new version will be disappointing.

Re: Movie recommendations

For people who understand French or German I would recommend going to see Intouchables (Ziemlich beste Freunde, IMHO: very bad title translation).

Although the story isn't all that original the film strangely works, maybe because of the actors, maybe because of the atmosphere. Something magical happens.

Yes! Saw it recently and it's a great film and a must see, preferably on the big screen. Will be following up with the book as soon as possible.

Haven't seen the Swedish version yet but am going to. Have heard only brilliant things about it.

The actress, Rooney Mara, who played Lisbeth in the Hollywood version is absolutely fantastic! Definitely an A-list actress in the making, very striking and very cool.

I was worried too, but having read the books, twice, and seen the swedish versions, many times, I had to go and see it. It's fine. I was sure that it would be smoothed out by the Hollywood steamroller, but in fact Sony left David Fincher a free hand and he did a great job. Rooney Mara is so cute that I was sure she would screw up, but no ... she got a punk hairdo, had piercings and tattoos and made a great Lisabeth Salander.

For those who know the previous versions, there is a neat twist at the end to surprise you.

In the end I still prefer the swedish version, though.

I loved the swedish films, usually I don't like films based on great books but these ones was absolutely thrilling.
Hmm still need to see Hollywood version...

Good thread!

For me, Drive is the best movie this year or last year I don´t understand why it wasn´t nominated for the Golden Globes...

Moneyball is also great and worth seeing!

Fully Agree. Drive was MAJORLY snubbed.

Re: Movie recommendations

There is only one Lisbeth and it's Noomi, for me...I like Fincher in general but the Hollywood version had zero tension in comparison to the Swedish series...A series that originally actually came out as made for tv movie series in 6 episodes...It doesn't have the budget of Hollywood obviously but the acting is firstrate and the tension is palpable...Best interpretation of the book, which is better than either film/series

I didn't think Fincher stayed true to the book either

Re: Movie recommendations

Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendations people have made, I've since viewed quite a few of them and very much enjoyed them. The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas stands out. Also really liked The Help. It's been interesting to watch movies with no pre-conceptions.

I saw Take Shelter this weekend and enjoyed the tension.

Re: Movie recommendations

Would just like to warn people off a movie. Sat down and tried to watch "Immortals" last night, it's been sitting on my hard-drive for a few weeks now.
Seriously, don't bother. Glad I didn't pay good money to see, rent, or buy this utter piece of tat.
It's only redemming feature was Freida Pinto getting her kit off, but I think she probably used a body-double.

That movie will always hold a special place in my heart because it brought me back to the joy of going to the movies in the US. I saw it the weekend it came out in NYC and at the moment the traitor gets his balls crushed by the huge hammer, this black woman just stood up and yelled, "AWWWWWW HEEEEELLL NAAAAWWWWW!!!"

The theater was hysterical for a minute after.

The Man From Earth

- no action, no romance, i can see this as different genre.

story line
An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years.

Re: Movie recommendations

Man from earth is good, i agree- very down to earth aproach to imortality

I would recomend, if you like S.Fiction:

Animatrix (animated film, in connection to the Matrix story, yet independant) great animation, good stories!
Nirvana is a 1997 Italian science fiction film directed by Gabriele Salvatores. The film stars Christopher Lambert, Diego Abatantuono, Sergio Rubini and Stefania Rocca. - plot: a programer that realises his main caracter in a game he created got concious of himself.
Blubbery- an interesting aproach to the peyotee ritual of the native indians in america, mixed with a western...... suprisingly good!

now- this is a list of films i loved in last few years. they are mixtures of animation, fantasy, good plots,fun........

kung fu hustle
shaolin soccer (both created by Stephen Chow)
Mirror Mask
The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus
(more romantic)
The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Love Me If You Dare (french)
Run Lola Run (german)
Valley Of Flowers
Once
Arizona Dream
(animated)
Howl^s moving castle
spirited away
...............many more
ps. worth watching : Baraka
One Giant Leap
Ashes and Snow !!!!!!!!
enjoy
