Mad Max - the original Mel Gibson (nihilistic road movie, very violent, not much dialogue but makes some fairly valid points about family and revenge plus, you know, Mel when he was very pretty and not publically nuts) or the Tom Hardy balls-up? Not that Tom Hardy isn't pretty. He is.

I believe you have my opinion...

There's a really misogynistic thread to the new version that I don't remember from the original (or it was "of its time" or less overt, I don't know). It has Rosie Huntingdon-Thingy in it attempting to act again. And Charlize Theron who, I can only imagine, was given the contract to sign in a weakened moment. Or maybe they just paid them a lot... Go and see Tom Hardy in absolutely anything else, particularly Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Inception.
I thought Fury Road was a cracking movie; more similar to Mad Max 2 than anything else. You don't watch Mad Max movies for compelling performances; you watch them for batshit crazy, in your face, action sequences and total whackjob characters.

I find your opinion somewhat mediocre .

Meh. Potato potahto...

I didn't like Mad Max 2 either. I did watch Fury Road on a plane with a sleeping toddler on my knee so... I think it was the guy intent on single-handedly (!) repopulating with model/actresses that really bugged me. I just didn't like it. It could have been the violence. I'm no good with violence since having Little Rufus.

The Fall is good - movie, not TV series - and stunning to look at. Apparently all of the locations are real. The story is fairly slight (more of a fable I suppose) but it's a great watch.

Re: Movie recommendations

Has anyone seen Spotlight? It's about the Boston Globe journalists exposing the Catholic church, covering up their priests' relationships with children.

We went to see it in Bern, in English. A truly excellent documentation of this shameful story.

I was looking forward to seeing it in Bern on Sunday in English, but now it has won an Oscar I am less happy. I find I dislike most Oscar winning films.

No, but I very much want to.

Re: Movie recommendations

Saw James Bond: Spectre over the weekend and.. not so sure. It was quite long-winded, I thought.

Skyfall was the better of the two - stronger story.

We go to the cinema when a good film is showing in the original English language, this weekend we went to see Suffragette, it's about the women's fight for their vote, set in London 1912. Excellent film,

Former James Bond actor George Lazenby backs Idris Elba to play 007

Idris Alba gets my vote too - he would make a great James Bond.

Re: Movie recommendations

he was awesome in Beasts of No Nation. (I recommend the movie- and also the Fela Kuti album the story was named after. They have nothing to do with one another, but if you want to listen to some funky afrobeat, check out Fela Kuti.)

However, I don't like the idea of a black James Bond. It just changes the image too much. Does that mean i'm racist? Nah, I wouldn't want to see an Asian woman or a transvestite Pygmy as Bond either- replace the actor, but don't reinvent the character.

The name’s Elba, Idris Elba – and he must be James Bond

Daniel Craig has confirmed he is out: no more James Bond.

The role is now up for grabs. If the wonderful actor and very cool Mr. Elba doesn't take/get the job, I'll not be happy

Higgleston got the bookies closing their books - but he is a tiny man. Bond should have some presences - and Elba would push the envelope from blonde to black.

Re: Movie recommendations

He's 6'2", which makes him 4 inches taller than Craig. Elba is a little over 6'2". Though he seems bigger, admittedly.

All heights according to IMDB.

Hiddleston wouldn't be a very good Bond though, he's more of a Q or an urbane bad guy, methinks.

Huge and huggable is Hiddles, that's for sure.. but just too cute and boyish looking for Bond.
