Re: Movie recommendations

Watched Star Wars: Rogue One a while ago, it was okay.

Amy Adams & Jeremy Renner's Arrival, on the other hand, was brilliant.

Any decent movies? I am in need of a good movie or two this weekend

Hooboy... did I miss something with Arrival? I love scifi, but thought this movie was meh. Would love to hear reasons for watching it again.

Re: Movie recommendations

The connection Adams' character has with the Aliens is mysterious and very intense.. she somehow conveys a sense of disorientation with time and space, and the language connection works backwards reaching into her life which makes no sense, until it does.

I loved it. The way the alien language and its far-reaching imagery is used as something fluid/organic to describe and connect time and meaning - amazing, no? Very well done, I thought.

Adams is brilliant in the way she draws you in, very talented actress.. she leaves every other actor standing..

Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgård in "Breaking the Waves"

Not sure how I missed this movie in late 90s/ early 00s?

It is quite something.. excellent, still thinking about it.

It's incredibly bleak - and you missed the punchline - it's directed by Lars Von Trier...

Also I saw Alien Covenant recently - Fassbender is incredible in it - probably his best performance since "Trespass against us" - I prefer it to Prometheus even though Prometheus is more visually stunning but neither are up to the original Alien movie of 1979.

Isn't Fassbender just the bee's knees, love him!

I have watched Prometheus a few times, think Fassbender is simply brilliant in that movie. Hard pressed to find a movie where he isn't brilliant, tbh..

Now I'm really looking forward to Alien Covenant, ta

Re: Movie recommendations

You're very welcome

Fassbender is good yes - but I'd still have him way behind Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges & Calvary are masterpieces) - and he is a real actor - as compared to say Colin Farrell who just plays slightly varied versions of the same character (Tigerland and Intermission excepted).

If you liked Prometheus Alien Covenant will be something special - enjoy.

I saw "Breaking the Waves" million times...love it.

I just saw some real light fun, had a girls night and we watched "The Intervention". It is great, ironic.

"Results" were great too. "The Unexpected" will be next.

Thanks a lot - have added the first 2 to this coming week's movie consumption queue.

If you liked "Breaking the Waves" then "The Idiots" and "Open Hearts (Elsker Dig For Evigt)" are the very pinnacle of that genre - I'd class Open Hearts as one of the best movies of the last 20 years and also directed by a lady (Susanne Bier).

Watched Infamous last night. Sandra Bullock as Harper lee was amazing.. and Tobey Jones as Capote: unbelievably good. What an amazing film. I am still thinking about it.. superb!

I also saw Michael Fassbender's Assassin's Creed movie. Good fun.

Infamous is rather excellent. I think we tend to forget Sandra is a damn effective actor! Have you seen Capote too? Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I watched them very close together - a bit of a mind bender!

I can recommend Guardian's of the Galaxy 2 - lots of cheerful mayhem.

I really enjoyed Ben Affleck in The Accountant - very interesting, in a Bourne-does-Maths kind of way, with a bit of a Minority Report vibe (although there is no futuristic element in that way).

I've just read Austenland by Shannon Hale and the movie arrived this morning. As soon as LR is in bed, that's my Sunday evening wallow!

I was really disappointed in Suicide Squad, the most recent Bourne and bloody Rogue One, for which I had high hopes. I just bought Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (loved, loved, loved the book) and Bridge of Spies, so they''re hopefully soon!

Thanks! We watched "Capote" recently too. I didn't know there was competition. Philip Seymour Hoffman was so great as Capote that I think I'll wait a while until watching the same plot again...

We dug up "Night falls on Manhattan" with Andy Garcia from Netflix. Classic New York cop flick, but worth a watch.

I had the choice and went for the excellent Tobey Jones.. thought he even looked like Capote. S. Bullock just blew me away, what a pair of brilliant actors! Well matched as Capote and Lee.

Anyway, was not disappointed.. but like you, will now wait a while until I watch the Hoffman film.

GG1 was great fun, looking forward to seeing the 2nd one. Rogue One was awful - don't quite know how they could get that so wrong.

Bridge of Spies is fab. You're in for a treat.. Mark Rylance is awesome and Tom Hanks is right on form, as ever.

Welcome.

I know - Rogue One should have been cracking. The cast was excellent - the story was inevitable - but... yuck. A misfire.

Rylance is excellent - looking forward to that. I re-watched Argo the other day... wow.

I enjoyed "Lion" - I thought it was a good family film. It's a true story from India & Australia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_(2016_film)

right near the end you find out that the boy had been pronouncing his own name wrongly...
