British gangster movies

I am a fan of British gangster movies (with subtitles I am afraid ). I have seen a few like "The bank job", "Sexy beast", "Get carter", and "The long good Friday".
"Sexy beast" is probably one of my favorite movies. Ben Kingsley is astonishing in it.

Any recommendations? Any not very well known gems out there?

Re: British gangster movies

I presume you've heard of the Guy Ritchie movies. "Snatch" and "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels".

Re: British gangster movies

While not exactly a Gangster movie, Dead Man's Shoes does tick all the boxes for Revenge movies. Maybe you'll enjoy it...

Set in the Peak District, it stars Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), who also co-wrote, as a Soldier returning home to his mentally disabled younger brother, and having to deal with the local gang of heavies and drug dealers.

to all.

Very good recommendations.

alanshearer: I have seen the long good Friday and liked it a lot.
sharkey: great, I will check it out.
RolandRB: What is unleashed? There are several entries for that title.
Eire: Have not seen it, thanks.
Patxi: Great Caine movie, I agree.
jbrady: I have heard good things about Snatch but I am not a Brad Pitt fan. I should give it a try though.

Re: British gangster movies

If you like these movies and how they're done, also consider Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111149/)

Not gangsta but it would tick boxes for those who like many of the movies mentioned thusfar.

"Unleashed" is aka "Danny the Dog". It is a Jet Li martial arts film but very gritty with Bob Hoskins in his perfect role as a seedy little gangster who controls him.

Boxman: Thanks, will look.
RolandRB: Bob Hoskins was great in the long good Friday. I will check this one.

Did you guys like the "Bank Job"? It got trashed by critics in the UK but was quite successful in the US. Jason Statham is a bit stiff and always seems to play himself but still I enjoyed it a lot.

Re: British gangster movies

"Rise of the Footsoldier" surpasses all.

You can watch is back to back and still spot more violence you didn't see the last time.

Re: British gangster movies

With Bob Hoskins being mentioned before, what about Mona Lisa? Not a typical ganster movie but certainly with a seedy gangland setting.
I liked Robbie Coltrane's character. For some reason I used to fancy living in a portacabin in a big workshop/shed.
