Re: [General discussion of] PS3

OK with the benefit of a couple of weeks hindsight, I can say a little more about my nice shiny ps3.

As a games machine im still not impressed. I just find myself gravitating back to my xbox 360 as soon as I actually fancy playing a game. And if i wanted to buy a game which has an online component, I would certainly check out the xbox version instead. the updated playstation store is nicer and i like it, but sony just cant get the hang of online stuff yet. just look at the metal gear solid multiplayer beta that was released this week and then suspended the day after because they couldnt get it to work!

As a kind of media hub on the other hand, I think the ps3 is fantastic. I have a few more blu rays now and the picture quality and sound quality are really super. What makes it best is actually that the ps3 is virtually silent, at least compared to the category 5 hurricane that is the xbox 360. Brilliant.

Even more so, I use medialink now to stream content from my mac... my girlfriend wanted to show some photos from a recent weekend in spain, so we could stream them perfectly from my macbook to my lcd tv, and it worked great.

when i wanted to listen to music from itunes in our living room, it also streams perfectly, and the album covers are shown as well. playlists and everything work correctly.

finally, i have also been streaming some downloaded movies over to my tv, and this works great as well (for the most part... some of my downloaded movies didnt work well, but the majority do).

i cant put my finger on it exaclty, but this is the way forward somehow, being able to stream all your content everywhere, with no wires.

in any case, its great!

yup, as long as rockstar didnt screw this one up, which im fairly certain they didnt, GTA IV could be the corner turner for the ps3.

mind u i will get it on the 360.

Is that Metal Gear Online? I downloaded it, but it won't let me play, when I try to connect, it says they're rescheduling the beta for a later date because the servers can't cope with the demand.

Is that possible? I've not really mucked about with the internal workings of the PS3, I'm just happy to let it do it's thing.

I think it was around 700-800 MB, but the only thing that works is the trailer.

Yes they will. I have a few.

Mentioned before, but it's only EA that don't seem to supply their games with english here.

UK are selling PS3 40gb + GTA4 as a bundle. Personally I'd buy that then buy a 320gb 2.5" drive swop the thing. I have a 60gb and I've used 41gb already. Time to go harddisk shopping

the disk is just too small to use as a multimedia centre

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

it has been widely reported that a metal gear solid bundle will be released in june, which will include the game, an 80gb hard drive instead of 40gb, and a new dual shock controller which has the six axis thing AND rumble.

note to catalyst.... if you are running out of space, consider streaming content to your ps3 instead of a bigger hard drive.... this works great!

Another option: It is pure simplicity also to swap the internal drive for a bigger 2.5" SATA unit. There are plenty of web pages that even show the whole thing in pictures for the technically challenged.

Plus - it doesn't break your warranty. Sony are cool with people swapping the drive, well done Sony. Contrasts with MS trying to rip people off for the Xbox add-on drive.

Currently you can pick up a 250gig 2.5" SATA Western Digital 'Scorpio' drive for 60 quid in the UK. 120CHF or less in Switzerland?

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I will have to admit that I don't do too much gaming on it meself...and if so, just some 'dirt' ;o)

I use it mostly as a HD/Bluray player (300 is awesome on BluRay), hooked up directly to my MacBook or an external HD, over a HD-Ready beamer. I have noticed though that when I hook up the HD directly to the PS3 that I often get an error message 'cannot read content', thought it was the HD (maxxtor 300GB), but hooked up another (MyBook, don't recall how big, guessing 500GB) and same s*** different package.

any tips? I know I can just hook it up over the MacBook -> beamer, but the resolution sucks (
