Re: [General discussion of] PS3

you can stream music, photos and movies with medialink

occasionally you come across movie downloads that stutter a bit, but most work fine.

for example, last night i was watching heroes season 2, streamed wirelesslessly (original recording was hd) and it works absolutely beautifully.... just try the demo out, you get 30 minutes, then just switch it off and on again, it works wonderfully.

also for music, you get proper playlists including album covers. super. there are other streaming options, but i think medialink is both the cheapest and the best.

heres the link... try it and let me know what you think....

Does it actually deliver the video in HD?

from the link i posted:

HD video streaming
Make your PlayStation 3 your home media center. MediaLink can stream high definition video content to your living room with ease!

Continue movies from where you left off or fast forward and rewind, all effortlessly using your PlayStation 3 and MediaLink.

however, the episode of heroes i was watching was originally broadcast in hd but downscaled to something like dvd quality i believe. so i was watching it in approximate dvd quality, although to be honest to my eye it was better than dvd, with things like skin textures.

so it can but i wasnt but its still good. hows that.

I didn't think there was anything available that could actually stream proper HD, so I was a bit dubious.

I wonder if upscaling works for movies as it does with DVDs.

amazing isnt it. the way forward. i couldnt believe it myself, even with dvd quality, that it would stream so well. fast forwarding and rewinding is not as smooth as using, say, a dvd player, but its ok, and im pretty stunned by the ps3s abilities in this respect.

not really sure. either the ps3 or the tv / beamer will scale it to the correct output resolution, but i dont think this is the same as what we know as dvd upscaling as a "feature".

will definitely try it out and let you know!

the quality isn't so bad with the macbook (almost dvd quality), but I hate that I have to have the external running, and the mac.

i have also hooked up the macbook directly to the beamer (panasonic hd ready), but that is pretty crappy quality. will also check and see if there are any sw updates i can do for this. *sigh* the worries of a media slave...

The PS3 has wireless, so it should detect your router and network.
