Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I hated the MGS beta so cancelled my pre order, will go and check it out in a shop where I can play it for a bit before handing over any cash.

Looks like more rain this WE, so I might pop out and buy MGS. Getting a little tired of hunting pidgeons.

I loved MGS1 + 2, but never finished 3, didn't have the time.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Haha, how funny...

Zenistar.... i hated the beta too and cancelled my order.

Cyrus.... i also loved 1 and 2, and didnt finish 3..... stopped where you had to lie in wait for that guy in the jungle.

but seeing the reviews and being a sucker for great graphics and a compelling story, i feel i owe it to myself to pick it up.

Just to clarify for those who do not know, the beta was only for the online part of the game, and MGS is much more of a single player game IMHO.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I keep looking at this thread but it seems to be mainly about PS3 games. I don't really use my PS3's for games (mainly don't have the time for that) bought them primarily for BD Movies.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Well OK then.

Got a demo of eye-connect for the mac, installed and configured, and it goes through my firewall. The mac is wireless, but the PS3 is plugged into the router.

I can see my music from the PS3, and it plays, but only the first 30 seconds or so.

All the music is MP3, of varying quality, I thought it might have been some of my 320kbs encoded songs that it couldn't handle, but the same problem occurs on the lower quality ones, what gives?

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

actually, neither do i. I only have one game, GT prologue, which i played once but got bored. I use also for BD movies, and for streaming music, photos, and video (which works brilliantly with medialink).

However, one of the things i factored into my decision to buy the ps3 (which i got a coupla months ago) was the release of MGS4.

I had EXACTLY the same problem. i also couldnt solve that.

i now use my medialink, works much better. It isnt bandwith, since i can stream movies fine with ps3 from my macbook, and im sure movies use more data than an mp3 file.

In addition, medialink shows album covers which is a nice touch. You can use it for 30 mins, then all you need to do is switch it off and on again and it works again. alternatively you can buy it, i think its quite cheap.

So medialink fixes it?

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

medialink is a rival program, which works much better and is cheaper, and yes, you do not have the 30 second problem. thats why i couldnt justify buying eyeconnect, if it was buggy like that. luckily i found medialink elsewhere....

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

hey, also, eyeconnect adds something to your system registry so that when you uninstall it, its not really uninstalled! this led to a small problem in installing medialink if i recall.... really bad form by the eyeconnect people to do that!!!!

you will have to google a little script that needs to be run, to even properly get rid of eyeconnect. if you have trouble finding it, i will have a look for it sometime.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Just tried medialink and it's working, cheers. That's probably going to get bought.

No problem with the eye-connect removal.

I also checked their website for my problem, they're aware of it, but don't yet no the cause.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

yep, but when you get an update to medialink and try to install that, you might come across the problem with eyeconnect in the registry then.... just so you know.

also, i think its great if you buy medialink, but bear in mind that if you switch it on and off, it will keep working. also, if you for example stream a movie, it doesnt mean the movie will stop after 30 mins.

enjoy.

I've played .avi files encoded with DivX or xvid as well as .divx files. The PS3 also plays AVC encoded files too.

The only thing is that about 20% or so don't seem to be compatible. Plus there are some issues with media servers also causing some files to be marked as unsupported even though they play fine off of media directly. Hopefully they'll get that sorted with future updates.

Your best bet is to put the cards on an SD card (if you have the 60gig PS3 that has the slots) or USB stick and play them from there. Make a subdirectory called 'video' and drop the files in that.

The PS3 has become my machine of choice for watching downloaded video - even more so than the old trusty chipped Xbox. It's just much quieter and has the memory card slots built in. It's a real multimedia powerhouse.
Gav, I am just about to take a PS3 to link to Vista MC on my network. I already "clean" downloaded files with MPEG4Modifier so believe that this will be a great addition to my setup.

I assume there is no way to make the DVD region-free? And I look to the PS3 as the XBOX360 would do everything bar bring the BD functionality. For less than half the cost, of course.....

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Ok, I can answer my own question about Metal Gear Solid as i picked it up at the weekend.

Initial impressions are that it is very very stylish, with excellent graphics and interesting story. Control is so so. Its basically what i expected. In the end, its not that different from the last in the series.... just much more polished.... and it looks great in high definition.

It has often been a bugbear of mine that the Asian development houses seemed to found good franchises fifteen years ago, but then each new incarnation is hardly distinguishable from the last apart from graphical sheen. Thats true here too to some extent, but i can forgive it as it is Solid Snake after all, and who can forget the thrills he has provided in the past.

So, a very good looking game, i am sure i will enjoy it, im sure that the story will be great, the cut scenes long, and it will have plenty of surprises... but just not the game it could quite have been.

I think I've spent more time watching cut scenes than actualy playing the game. The game play is very enjoyable though.

I'm stuck on a boss battle at the mo, and I think it's right near the end, unless there's a plot twist (not too unlikely), it seems pretty short.

Why would you be missing something? It happens all the time that certain features are rolled out in certain territories first. Xbox Live UK has had movie downloads in UK for some months, but was at least a year behind America. Xbox Live switzerland still does not have anything.
