Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I've done my fair share of drinking and chasing women but I always found a place in my heart for Nintendo and I am no spring chicken.

There is a general feeling tho, esp in the media nowadays that all kids do is sit around getting fat with a playstation pad in their hands, maybe thats true, but I am more Snes generation than PS2 and I know kids dont go out adventuring on their bikes like I used to do.

Well I play on it when I can, more than not a couple of days a week for a few hours. Take it or leave it really. It's also a Blu Ray player so I watch films on it. I can also log on to EF and view posts as a web browser is on the Playstation 3.

I did prefer a footie field, swimming in rivers etc (not recommended) and chasing skirt when I was a meer youngster. The second being the ultimate past-time for hormonally charged teenage boys.

Your right it's not healthy, bit of a problem really. Life's about balances and perhaps parents should stop their kids from watching hours upon hours of TV, eating snackfoods/packet food and playing Playstation.

Kick them outside without cotton wool and allow them to "play in the mud!" Same applies to kids walking to school. I remember my dad must have picked me up twice in 11 years in a car, and that was probably due to a dentist appointment.

There's no way on earth I will allow my kids (not got some yet) to play more than 1hr of Playstation a night, or watch the TV for extended periods.

You'll find the most spending on video games comes from 25-35 yr olds. Why I don't know perhaps it's a time when you have more money in your pockets, the time to play is another matter.

Acroymns are just lazyness really, perhaps they should use shorter names for stuff.
Im also only going to allow my kids to play one hour per day as the rest of the time ill be playing it!

Well, I don't think it's entirely the kids fault, the parents seem to like to keep the kids in at every opportunity, the media would have you think there's a pedo round every corner. The poor kids get ferried everywhere, coccooned from even the slightest risks.

PS3 vs 1.80 Update

Well I got it d/l and all seems good!

One complaint with these updates....Sony never tell you how to use the new features. so I spend a while mucking around to get DVD upscaling to work. Has a couple of other options but I have no idea what they do!

Yep, I spent a good deal of time last night trying to get the music streaming from my Mac to the PS3, no joy yet . Didn't get a chance to try the upscaling.

Hit the triangle when in DVD playback, look for a icon on the middle row.

Wonder if an Ipod hook will work?

Apparently, it's possible to just plug in the ipod via usb, you can then navigate through the ipods directories to (eventually) find your music.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Anyone know we europeans don't have the same content from the playstation store as our US counterparts? I keep reading about releases on gaming sites that just don't appear here.

And where do I get the PSone games for my PSP, are they available for download in europe?

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Well I agree I keep reading reviews of well stocked Jap/US PS3 stores, seems to be very little being updated on the site, and once a week at most, and utter rubbish in the main. There was meant to be extra content for games, but I see only x2 games have been covered so far. Please please sort this out Sony!

Haven't seen the PSP games appear yet, so same as you...

Nice move on the casino royale on Blu Ray, couldn't wait for Sony so went out and bought it. Gave the duplicate to my mate as a incentive to buy a PS3!

Since 1.8 patch I've had issues with drop outs on my router. Create a static IP for your PS3 then drop it into a DMZ. Seemed to do the trick and has been stable since!

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Im not so up on the DMZ term?

How do I create a static IP address. I have a modem and assumed that I have a set Ip address.

If its too much to explain dont worry, but if you can advise what I need to do, that would be really cool.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Well for example...

Go to your pc and type ipconfig/all at a dos prompt, note down the DNS ip's, subnet bascially the whole lot.

Then return to your router and find out what range of IP's are being given out by DHCP, I usually use the last one from the range for the PS3.

Time to fire up the n/w settings on your PS3, this time rather than auto connect, select manual enter the Ip address you want the PS3 to be, along with gateway (router IP) subnet, dns etc etc.

Then go to your router look for a DMZ option and type the PS3's ip address in. Save in you router and test the connection on the ps3. It should give you a NAT type 2 and stablise the connection.

No guarantees though!

Another trick is to remove all WEP/Security and start from scratch, use no security, then MAC addresses, then WPA/WEP checking at each stage. (wireless only)

A dmz bypasses the security, so be aware of this!!!

IM me with your mail address and I should be able to help you.

DMZ = Demiltarised Zone

How is the PS3 connected? Via a modem directly or a modem, then router? Is it wireless or ethernet???

You do in the "outside world" but usually a router translates this into a internal IP, usually starting with 192, 10 etc etc.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Anyone managed a PSP to PS3 connection? I bought a ceramic PSP last week and the connection keeps erroring and muttering about WLAN Switch

(I assume this is the PS3 and not my router as the PS3 + PSP independantly make connections to the net + UPNP is switched on at my router!)

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Mine works fine, though I've only used the remote play feature, and not over the internet. The ps3 setup menu talks you through it.

Always have to check the obvious, but you have enabled the wireless on the PSP by flicking the switch on the side haven't you?

I assume so as the PSP can connect to the net! I'll go through the pain again this evening

Strange thing is the PS3 sends the connection keys etc to the PSP then you go to fire it and it fails...Now I'm confused

Uhm, I can't connect my PSP to the WLAN at home, but (wireless) connection to PS3 works just fine. (I've been told it's because the PSP needs a 13 character password to connect to WPA2, but I can't be bothered to reconfigure all my other gizmos.)

You updated your PSP firmware?
