To my mind, PES is the spirit of football, FIFA is the corporate malaise which plagues our beautiful game. PES hasn't been quite as brilliant as it used to be, and FIFA has been catching up, but PES 2010 looks like a return to its football simulation roots, which will hopefully recapture some of the old magic.
I can sort of understand that. But there's also a time to admit when the local breadmaker is getting rusty and Coop's fresh bread tastes better.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Ok, im currently playing through Uncharted 2: Among thieves (the sequel to drakes uncharted fortune).

I have to say, wow, what a game. Just brilliant, amazing set pieces, very intelligent, huge scope, well scripted, very cinematic..... well worth a punt if you like your tomb raider type games except simply better in every way.

in case you havent played the first one, that can be had very cheaply on amazon and is also an excellent game, maybe worth picking up before the sequel, as they are both so good.

I play Mortal Kombat vs DC online, there are relatively few people playing it seems - does anyone on EF have this game? Do they play online?

Agreed, have been playing this all week. Quite possibly the best videogame ever, I jest not.

Makes the self-proclaimed 'interactive movie' MGS4 look extremely sad.

The first was also great but should be played first as it will be disapointing after the magnificence of the sequel.

Yeah, I've heard the same. I've already acquired the first one (11 pounds, thank you play.com marketplace), and am waiting for U2 to drop in price. Then I'll play them back to back. It shall be a grand time.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Did anyone see the BBC TV show Watchdog recently about the PS3 "Yellow Light of Death"?

Sony was calling foul for various reasons:

www.techradar.com/news/gaming/sony-slams-ps3-yellow-light-of-death-report-636389

Mine's okay but if anything goes wrong after your PS3 packs up out of warranty it £128 (200+CHF) repair cost which has a warranty of six months.
So at today's prices if it goes wrong twice you might as well buy a new one (unless you have files you need to retrieve)

Anyone had technical problems here in CH? I guess private household insurance might cover the cost).

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I bought the new PS3 slim 120Go. I had never had a PS before and I must admit that it's just unbelievably awesome !!!

I finished Batman Arkham Asylum and I'm about to finish the more than excellent game: Uncharted 2: Amont the thieves. Next to come is SAW and Brutal Legend (for every metal fan) !

I bought two guitar hero's with the guitar and microphone, plus the headset so that I can play in multi !

I wasn't too much into game stuff but now, I guess I'm addicted. Besides, winter's coming and they just said that the prices to go skiing will increase badly... I'll do "physical activities" with my PS3 ;o)

Get your PS3 NOOOOWWWWW !!!

If you read somewhere like avforums there are is a lot of hysterical whining about the 'issue' but it seems to me like this is just a consequence of increased numbers of failures as systems age rather than an endemic design problem.

YLOD is a generic error indicating a system fault according to Sony. The most common cause seems to be problems with the lead-free solder (used in the motherboard) failing and there has been some success reported in fixing some problems by using a heat gun to 'reflow solder' at a key part of the motherboard.

Failures of original 60gig machines are going to be a pain when they eventually happen. I specifically bought mine to take advantage of the PS2 compatibility and SACD playback that newer PS3 systems no longer have. The various memory card slots and 4x usb ports are a nice bonus too.

So far, mine is a little over 2 years old and going strong.

I own a PS3, 360 and a Wii. Apart from movie playback, I can't see any reason why you would buy a PS3 over a 360.

Never had a problem with mine either. But regarding the insurance... the yellow light of death would be classified as manufacturers mistake, no?? Not sure why they would cough up money for that (or they just found a great way to get subsidies from the insurance industry...)

Still waiting for Modern War 2 and Mafia II - uncharted sounds like a good game to pass the time.

Btw - did anybody order the collectors edition of MW2 with the night vision goggles?

The PS3 certainly isn't infallible, its failure rate is 10% based on a recent survey. Which, compared to any piece of electronics, is pretty good honestly. And nothing compared to the 360's failure rate of over 50%. You won't find many people who still have a working launch unit of that thing. I know several people who are on their 3rd or 4th.

Although it would nice for Sony to put a much more lenient replacement program in place like Microsoft has, if the yellow light does turn out to be a common problem.

Umm, because I only want to own one system, PS3's first-party and exclusive titles are better, most best games are multiplatform anyway and the graphical difference between ports is negligeable, Blu-Ray, the hardware is way more reliable, and online is free? I don't think it's a very complicated concept to grasp.

yep, im a ps3 and 360 owner. the huge fan noise of the 360 is what normally puts me off.

im about to cancel my xbox live subscription to be honest. i have barely used it this year, not enough to justify.

i love the way that the ps3 handles all of my media (although i did also just get an apple tv and thats super too at what it is designed for).

The PS3 is an awful Bluray player so not really much point in getting one for that. It is great for playing DivX, MPEG4 but that's it.

Online may be free but Xbox Live is significantly better than the Sony offering, hence Sony adding Xbox-like features as each day goes on.

Again, it's great you like your PS3 but I think for an all round gaming experience, the 360 is miles ahead.

The rest is a matter of opinion and I'm not really interested in getting into a console war here, but this is just false. It's widely considered to be one of the best Blu-Ray players out there, is constantly updated, and was the first profile 2.0 compliant player on the market. It's maybe not the best one, but I've had to deal with basic Blu-Ray players since, like the Sony 350 model and another one I can remember, and the PS3 was superior to them in every way. So it's at the very least mid-range.

ps3 blu ray is widely considered to be a very good player. i have seen the sony chf 2000 franc blu ray player and could barely notice any difference.

it may be the case that xbox live has the edge of psn, but that gap has definitely narrowed over the last year and i have no problem with online ps3 gaming.

my xbox 360 sits in the corner, i only fire it up for a few faves like rez hd. i use my ps3 one way or another most days.

Nope, when it comes to multiplatform the Xbox generally has the better version of games plus there are just as many, if not more, excellent Xbox exclusives.

I got my PS3 because of the multimedia flexibility but with later models Sony lost some pretty important (to me, anyway) functionality.

For anyone thinking of buying a console now, Xbox would have the edge IMO. However, games like Uncharted 2 bring hope for better things to come for PS3.
