Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I bought a PS3 2 months ago. My xbox360 broke 3 times, since then I have vowed to buy all new games on the ps3 and to no longer 'invest' in the xbox....

Nope, when it comes to multiplatform the Xbox generally has the better version of games plus there are just as many, if not more, excellent Xbox exclusives.
There are very few multi-platform games that have any substantial differences between versions. GTA4 has the extra downloadable episodes, but I honestly can't think of any others. Graphics tend to be better, too, but let me tell you, most people could give a crap if the resolution is 640p insteap of 720p, or if the framerate is slightly worse. GTA4 looks better on the PS3 despite the lower resolution. Trust me, I've watched all the graphic comparison videos and the difference has never been anything 98% of the population would care about.

As for the exclusives, it's a matter of opinion, I guess. I'd rather have Little Big Planet, Uncharted 1 and 2, Motorstorm 2, MGS4, Killzone 2, and Valkyria Chronicles, and Wipeout HD over any 360 exclusives. But I'm not a big fan of steroid-boosted Neandrethals killing monsters with chainsaw shotguns. Maybe I'm weird.

I got my PS3 because of the multimedia flexibility but with later models Sony lost some pretty important (to me, anyway) functionality.
Ok.

For anyone thinking of buying a console now, Xbox would have the edge IMO. However, games like Uncharted 2 bring hope for better things to come for PS3.
Until about a year ago, I myself would have agreed, but it's not so clear anymore. It's even less clear now when the prices of the two are pretty much the same.

A year ago, the PS3 was slightly more expensive but I went for it because I realized that owning a PS3 is not much more expensive and, if you add it all up, is often cheaper than owning a 360.

Want wi-fi on the 360? Dish out another 100 francs for their wi-fi adapter. Want to play online? Dish out 80 francs a year for the LIVE service. Download most of your games and you need a bigger hard drive? Time to dish out tons more money for a larger proprietary harddrive (whereas the PS3 came not only with a larger hard drive, but if you need more space it takes any 2.5" HD, which are much cheaper). Plus, not having to worry about the console potentially sh1tting the bed once a year was also very appealing.

For me it was a no-brainer.

I think you need to think of the PS3 Bluray player in the same way people thought of the PS2 DVD player. It was ok when it first came out but after a couple of years there were models that were significantly better.

People wrongly assume that if something is HD then it is automatically the best. Comparing a Samsung to Panasonic will show you that is not the case and there are now Bluray players that are much better the PS3.

Either way, Bluray is somewhat irrelevant because a) it is not selling that well and b) the future is downloads.

So you don't like "steroid-boosted Neandrethals killing monsters with chainsaw shotguns" but you'd rather have a PS3 because of Killzone 2?

At least make your argument consistent!

Yes, when I first got my PS3 soon after launch date, I looked at the films on offer and it was bewildering what a hotch potch of mostly lame titles tehre were (apart from the Casino Royale which was free with the PS3 anyway).
Now two and a half years later, you still can't go into MediaMarkt and know that the film you want is going to be available yet.

The shops don't stock them so much, and when they do, they're at an outrageous price. I was really suprised at the range you can get ordering online. I hadn't looked for a couple of years as they just didn't seem to have any of the films I wanted, that's completely changed. I've been busy ordering some of my favourites, though I'm not yet at the stage of replacing my DVDs.

Back to the PS3, it's quieter and looks better, so there. I think it's still got a way to go before people use it to it's full abilities.

And where do you order from to get a good price?
Can you order BR titles in the American / British versions from a Swiss site to avoid paying import taxes?

Cheers,
HB

Amazon UK, they usualy slip through without getting taxed, but with the rate of the pound and the cheap prices, they still work out cheaper even if they do get caught. Generaly if it's one or two at a time, they come in below the threshold.

Again, false. 100 million Blu-Rays to be sold this year and only due to increase next year, with Blu-Ray players dropping in price for the holiday season. The future is downloads, but it'll be at least a decade before digital distribution even reaches a 50/50 ratio with physical media. Retailers simply won't let it happen that quickly. Even Microsoft's next console will probably be Blu-Ray based.

Monkeynut's funny comment aside, Killzone is more along the lines of Call of Duty, a more realistic and appealing FPS to me (the futuristic setting aside). There's a reason I didn't put Resistance. And if I did want to play Gear of War, I could play it on my PC. Whether it's even a true exclusive is debatable.

Anyway, console wars are lame, I'm just stating the facts. Post late-2008, I can't imagine anyone getting either a PS3 or a 360 and being unhappy with their purchase. You just have to choose what's best for you. If I already had a Blu-Ray player, had my modem right next to the TV, didn't mind paying for online, and cared about a miniscule change in graphics, I maybe would have gone for the 360.

Play.com always sends stuff separately, so no taxes. For American Blu-rays, Axelmusic.com tells you which ones are region-free, and the prices tend to be good.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

How would you compare the Prices of games for PS3 and 360?

I have 360 and I've "heard" that PS3 games are slightly pricier... or am I wrong?

As for exclusives, I think sooner or later they are available on both consoles, as its good business, if one can be patient.

Only exclusive I like so far on PS3 is "God of War" though have played the tacky 360 alternative of it i.e. Conan, good but not as impressive

Nah, they're the same. Sometimes Interdiscount inexplicably has the PS3 version for 109 francs compared to 99 francs for the 360 version. But why in the world would you buy your games there and pay so much? I get all my stuff from play.com and even at full price, the games are never more expensive than 75 francs. And if you wait a while for their sales or order from their user marketplace, you'll never pay more than 50-60.

This is true, some "exclusives" like Bioshock and Ninja Gaiden II were actually timed exclusives that were eventually released on the PS3.

Well.. I havent bought any games on Swiss market, so wouldnt know but they seem a bit pricey. In London you can buy them for 20 GBP tops (used ones) and even much lower if you can wait a while.

Also you can trade in your old games too.

Cheers for confirming that, though I was under the impression that Swiss VAT being lower than UK, the prices would be lower.

Even the Laptops and Consoles seem somewhat higher priced than UK.

or in the case of something like the ace combat series, a ps exclusive strangely became an xbox exclusive.

i really like blu ray i must say. after now having something of a collection, the differences between blu ray and dvd are painfully obvious. at the beginning the differences were much more subtle.

i mostly order on amazon.co.uk. sometimes i have ordered from amazon.com in the states. most recently, i got the excellent documentary series called "universe" season 2 from the history channel. it looks great in 1080p.

One definitely sees an improvement going from DVD to Blu-Ray, but the biggest shock comes when you go back from Blu-Ray to DVD. The drop-off in quality is jarring.

The newest comparison video for a multi-console game, Borderlands:

Yes, some console's version must be "superior"!

Hint: They look the same.
