Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I would be wary about buying games here unless you have confirmed they are multi-language. Once you open the game you CANNOT take/send it back to the shop.

However I have bought some PS3 games here that even in wog said were in German only and were in fact in English (Lego Rock band, Guitar Hero....)

Ratchet series is in English, also the new game: Heavy rain.

You can order through Amazon.co.uk (but yes this is on-line which you want to avoid), however often the games come from a different company. That said delivery has been ca. one week.

And yes, often it is cheaper to buy them from the UK (but not always).

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I'd say 95% of the time it's cheaper to order from the UK by a significant margin. I remember Uncharted 2 was 49 CHF at digitec when it came out (English-only version, coincidentally), but cases like that were few and far between. Also, for games like Rock Band, the boxes are so big that shipping is cost prohibitive, so I'll give you that.

But for brand new games, usually the price is 99 CHF, 89 if we're lucky.

Brand new games in the UK go for 39 pounds, 45 max, which makes 60-70 CHF. And there are usually one-day deals close to release time where they cost much less, often 29 pounds (less than 50 CHF). This never happens in Switzerland.

I'm all for the convinence of buying things close to home, but if the price difference is 30-50% downright consistently, you can only allow yourself to get screwed for so long.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

I made the school boy error of buying MW2 in german.

Bit of a pain sorting out gun classes etc... but its funny when playing the campain (offline) and im getting instructions for cover fire etc... and with my **** poor german i always go the wrong way lol.

I dont supose anyone knows how to play against Americans/English/Germans online with mw2?? Im guessing that because of my IP address it sticks me against swiss and french players. I just find that not as many use headsets compared to when i was in the UK.

Most games are multi-lingual despite the box and manual being in German. Check Wog.ch, they usually say what the in-game languages are.

And online shops like play.com never take a month, more like a week and a half. The most it ever took for me was 3 weeks, and that was an exceptional case.

Games are so expensive it Switzerland that's it's downright criminal. I only order online now.

I didn't want to say that from the beginning but now that you mention it, it was Play.com that took 1 month to deliver and that happened twice ... I have order 4 times from it so it is 50% so far ...

Thanks for the info with Wog.ch, I will check it out. All the best.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

There's a TV show on the British TV station Channel4 (and probably shown on some other Euro stations) called GT Academy, showing the winners of the PS3 Gran Tourismo best laps competition in a few tasty motors at Silverstone.
The two best drivers (to be decided in the next episode) get to drive in a Dubai 24 Hours race alongside Jonny Herbert.

A very decent prize don't you agree? Almost takes your mind off the delay of GT5.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Guitar Hero was just 116chf here with Guitar from Digitec which I thought was a good price.

I agree the prices in the UK are very low compared to here.

Recently bought in the UK: Ratchet Crack in time and Tomb raider (latest one, which I am not impressed with) for a fraction of what they would cost here.

Don't buy that many games and don't have a lot of time to play them etc.. SO often wait till they have been out a while before ordering.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Drat! My PS3 has just bought it.
The yellow light of death has paid my system a visit.

I heard that if you return a PS3 to a main retailler for repair it takes about a month.
I've seen on Youtube how to do a repair but it's out of my capabilities.

I tried to google PS3 reparatur on google.ch but the main results were for German repairers. UK repairs are £75 plus postage. German 100 Euros plus postage.

So has anyone heard of a place in Switzerland that can do repairs quicker than official channels?

Not sure how much the repair will cost vs a new one with a 12 month warranty.

Can't help, but since I've been getting a red screen of death and a message that a serious error has occurred, I might soon be in the same situation.....

Anyone else heard of this red screen issue?

Call the helpline.
I called the Swiss one but my German wasn't good enough.
So I emailed ( Service@ch.PlayStation.com ) a question about the yellow light of death and got this reply:

Sehr geehrter PlayStation Kunde,

If I'm correct when you get a refurbished PS3 back you get a 1.5 year warranty. Is that how this translates ?

I also called the UK helpline and they said for £135 you can get your bust PS3 collected and get a refurbed PS3 back with only a 3 months warranty.

I think it's the older ones (story below says 60GB). My one is a 3 years old 60GB.
The machines I saw on BBC's watchdog were old big style ones :

mine is the new slim, yes, but it doesnt mean that because mine has died that there is a general problem.

the email reply you got says that you can exchange your defective ps3 for a new one at the place you bought it, or you can send it in to sony directly yourself.

thats good news, i will try and exchange mine next week.

Okay I called Weber Vonesch AG and a nice woman told me to return the PS3 to them with a letter saying that you agree to accept the 225CHF charge.

I sent it Monday evening (only 10CHF for economy 5.25kilos. In the UK I'd send it registered post, but here in CH it's more reliable). Today (Wednesday lunchtime) I got a call and the woman asked me, "Which PS3 model do you want? 40, 60, 80 or 120 GB?"
I said, "Mine was 60GB. But can I have a 120GB please?"
She answered "Yes, but it's a slimline model"
I replied, "Okay thanks, I know. I want to be able to play some old PS2 games."
She said, "No the only model that will play PS2 games is the old fat 60GB."

So I'm taking the phat 60GB. Should arrive Friday. I thought all new slimlines were backwards compatible with all PS2 games. Whereas the old ones only supported certain games / release versions of games.

The Playstation website used to have alist of PS2 games and their codes that are compatible but the website now says :

PlayStation 2 format software
PlayStation 2 software is not compatible with PlayStation 3. However, some discontinued models such as PlayStation 3 60GB (Model Number: CECHC03*), support limited compatibility with some PlayStation 2 software.

Anybody out there been able to play old PS2 games on a slimline?

Ha ha, this morning I had the Post bloke delivering my PS3. When I went to the front door he questioned me, "Baar?" I thought yes the package has been sent from Weber Vonesch in Baar near Zug.
I said, "Ja, ja. Baar".
He got a bit upset and said it again.
Then he showed me the slip for 225CHF and he had obviously been saying, "Bar"
I didn't realise it was COD (Cash on Delivery not Call of Duty ), I thought I'd get a payment slip. So I'll pick it up tomorrow, he said it wouldn't be available for collection from the local post office till tomorrow morning.
