Re: PS3 to buy or not to buy?

Yes the graphics of the PS3 in combination with PS3 games will be comparably much better. Besides the PS3 is a Blu Ray player as well. So Mom and Dad can take advantage of that too!

Needless to say with a better monitor or TV the full potential of this mean machine can be realized.

Lastly, come on it is Christmas after all, and if you are thinking about the pro and cons of buying it, means that you can afford it without going out on a limb and a leg!

Go for it....

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Well ended up buying an Xbox 360. Reason being that three different shops told me that the PS3 40gb is not compatible with PS2 games( link confirming this) http://uk.playstation.com/help-suppo...TION-3-40GB/?/

It seems that all PS3 60GB models have been pulled in Switzerland leaving only the 40Gb models available and the new owners forced to start all over again.
So I figured that if buy buying the PS3 we end up making all our PS2 games redundant then might as well start afresh with an Xbox and not give Sony any more support on their gaming front.

I have a point to make here, why would you buy a PS3 to play PS2 games? Why not just keep the PS2? how many PS1 games do you play on your PS2?

I have a 60gb PS3 and I've played a grand total of x2 games from a library of 50 odd ps2 games I also have PS1 games (god I'm old)

The point is if you sell the ps2 it's worth peanuts, you might aswell keep it and if it fails ebay for another one. I just don't see an argument here, it's like saying you want to play lp's on a cd player..?

However the 60gb PS3 does upscale PS2 games.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Well the argument is that the transition over to PS3 will take time vis a vis accumulating a collection of new games (CHF99 a pop), the idea would have been to bin or at least pack up the PS2 and just have one neat looking console under the TV that could still play the old favorites when necessary.
When we first got the PS2 the old PS1 games were still played from time to time for about 6 months.
And it's the principle of the whole thing, when you buy a new OS system for computers they still run your old apps, it's like Sony are trying to screw their old and loyal customers.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Well I bought a PS3 and am utterly unimpressed with it's capability for backwards compatibility. I can't see anywhere I can put my Atari 2600 cartridges, and having scoured shops and internet sites I am yet to find a suitable tape player that will allow me to load my Commodore 64 games. What kind of world is it where I can't get a daily fix of R-Type or Turrican without having to dig out my old machines?

R-Type -

I've got a super nintendo at home with R-Type, it has to be dusted off and dragged out now and again.

The PS3 is not a PC. What's the last time you could play n64 games on a gamecube? I'm sure the 360 had issues initially with backwards compatiblity. They're all at it to protect margins.

Why didn't you hunt for a 60gb one? I know Switzerland don't have them, but you could have probably imported from the UK? Saying that would you rather pay a lot more for a backwards compatable PS3 or pay half that to retain the PS2?

Sony removed the chip to drop the price, nothing more.

I paid 425 quid *don't covert this to chf it's scary!!* on March 23rd 2007 (release day in the UK), best money I've spent in a long time.

Blu-Ray is awesome, so is the media server bits and pieces. It's not really a games console more a media centre, and you can see where Sony are going with this. My only complaint is the titles are taking ages to come out.

So why didn't you buy a wii? Wait for the PS3 to sort it's stuff out? Seems to be what most of my mates are doing

Oh and complaints of game prices are unfounded. Import from the US if you're that worried about prices, Japan is even cheaper.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

its inevitable in any discussion about the ps3 that comparisons with the xbox 360 will rear their ugly head.... and vice versa, i.e. any discussions about ugly heads will lead to... erm, no.

pure and simple sony have dropped the ball on the ps3. wonderful looking, great potential, but the online component is simply not that polished compared to xbox live, where i know i can just switch on and play with my mates. secondly, as someone said, why on earth is it taking so long for killer games to come out??? i can scarcely believe it... its as if someone has actually paid sony to make the console fail.

now, as i really enjoy my gaming, im really kinda pissed how sony have handled the whole thing. i could write at length... and indeed i did! A few weeks ago i wrote to Howard Stringer, who is the head of sony worldwide, expressing my concern at the various parts of his product lines, ps3 being one in particular. No doubt it will never reach his hallowed office.

on the other hand, at some point next year, i will probably dive in and get a ps3 as well... cheap way into blu ray (although i have hd dvd already), and by then some more cool games might appear.

Well this whole gaming thing is beyond me, I never really got past Lemmings on my Macintosh performa 15yrs ago, I occasionally play my boys at FIFA but I donít think Iíve managed to score a goal to date

I wanted to get the PS3 for them as they were harping on about it, but I really donít think they know the merits of it and I wasnít bothered about the blue ray part of the console.
It was only after talking to the geeks in Media Mart FNAC and Amadeus that I got the hump with Sony and their whole backwards compatibility issue, I had less than a week before Xmas (so no time to get one form the UK) had done no research into all this but as I said I got the hump with Sony so decided to get the nice looking Xbox !
Iím going to sell the PS2 and all the games and no doubt spend another CHF2000 over the next few years building up an Xbox collection which I would have had to do with PS3 titles anyway, well at least Sony wont be profiting out of this (although Iím not exactly over the moon about Microsoft )
Gee I hope the boys are gonna like the Xbox.

Nick.

At the end of the day I hate M$ for cornering the market and I hate Sony for the rootkit fiasco, so you're pretty much between a rock and a hard place.

They'll love the 360, both have positive points, but sometimes i feel people are misled, shame you should have asked me a couple of weeks ago I would have "obtained a UK 60gb PS3" But then again that would have a been more expensive than the 40gb version.

Neither console will fail, but I have a feeling after the 2007 xbox360 year, it will be the PS3's in 2008, GT5, GTAIV, MGS4, Sony Home, the list is huge, we'll have to wait and see.

Plus HD format war is not over yet, interesting times.

I'm already up to 1200chf on the PS3 game front, but each generation that is released the more expensive it is to code/develop games and you expect this to some extent

Funnily enough, I just played Lemmings on the PS3 last week. There's a free demo you can download from Playstation online; tres cool!

It seems that all PS3 60GB models have been pulled in Switzerland leaving only the 40Gb models available and the new owners forced to start all over again.
Sony have stopped producing the 60 gig ps3 with some backwards compatibility (partially emulated, partially hardware) (although only america and japan got full bc with 100% hardware).
It's the same all over europe not just in Switzerland. I only picked up my ps3 (grudgingly as I was planning to wait till the price dropped) as I guessed that as soon as stock ran out that I'd regret not having the ps3 with at least some bc. The 40 gig model will not run any ps2 games because Sony want to stimulate sales of PS3 games and cut some costs (but not that much) by leaving the original ps2 chip out of the hardware.

Xbox360 seems to have a better selection of games at the moment and some games on the PS3 remind me of early amiga games which were poor ports from the st but the general impression is that xbox 360 reliability is not so great in comparision to other consoles though that may change.

But how do you avoid the dreaded zoll (customs)? If a game is over a certain price you'll get hit with customs duty and I think 10 francs just for them to loook at it.

At least this gen with the xbox 360 (which I think its up to the publisher if a game is region free) and the ps3 which is region free so you don't have to get some custom loader app at least. Wish the wii had been region free or had something like freeloader..

For me the fact it can play some ps2 games was good as I didn't bring my ps2 with me to switzerland so I was counting on the bc that I would be able to play the games I haven't yet played like gods of war and ico without lugging the ps2 over.

Also having 4 consoles under the tv in the living room wouldn't play too well with the wife either (not that 3 is that much better).

I plan on getting a hd tv next year so I hope the upscaling works well

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

red916 is my PS3 persona, if anyone wants to add me

Games I've got:

Motorstorm
F1 (yawn)
Assassin's Creed
GRAW 2
Timeshift

Motorstorm is a terrific game, I'm always going back for more carnage.

AC is incredibly pretty but awfully repetitive. The free running and climbing goes some way to make up for it, but not all that much replay value for me
Timeshift was my last purchase (on a whim) and it took me a week to even chuck it in. First impressions are quite good but then I've only played it for a half hour

Totally agree, im glad that i did not purchase a ps3, i borrowed a friends for a week with AC and was bored after 4 days.

Also he has various racing games, flying shootemups etc.... all below average...........im sure the games will come soon enough, but until then i wont be making a purchase.

I am still very happy with my ps2........Prince of Persia (sands of time) is just amazing!!! (same people that made AC)
