Indeed, things used to be a lot more convenient before PC-Joy on Löwenstrasse was taken over by EB. Of course it's gone altogether now so that's that. That was why I ordered Assassin's Creed from Amazon.co.uk but it's just a bit of a pain... I suppose I'm just too impatient.

By the way Gav, when you said you use your PS3 to watch Divx and Xvid files, are you talking about the extension or the .avi files with those compressions? I've got a bunch of stuff in the latter, which I'd love to watch on my telly but I've got no clue how to do it. File conversion maybe?

S
I've played .avi files encoded with DivX or xvid as well as .divx files. The PS3 also plays AVC encoded files too.

The only thing is that about 20% or so don't seem to be compatible. Plus there are some issues with media servers also causing some files to be marked as unsupported even though they play fine off of media directly. Hopefully they'll get that sorted with future updates.

Your best bet is to put the cards on an SD card (if you have the 60gig PS3 that has the slots) or USB stick and play them from there. Make a subdirectory called 'video' and drop the files in that.

The PS3 has become my machine of choice for watching downloaded video - even more so than the old trusty chipped Xbox. It's just much quieter and has the memory card slots built in. It's a real multimedia powerhouse.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Cheers, I'll give it a try using an SD card. So far I've been using the WMP media server bit and I've also used a similar function in Winamp but to no avail.

I also suspect that playing these files via wifi from my router isn't helping things.

If I can get this to work then it will be, as you say, a great way of using the media I have without being tied to my PC.

if your husband does not yet have call of duty 4, just pick it up. its a guaranteed winner i promise, especially since he has orange box, which is a similar type of game.
Is there any place in Zurich where I can buy the English version of COD4..or is Amazon.co.uk better?

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Damn you lot and your PS3s, get a 360

Shame it's not cross platform for games like CoD4 - we could have had an EF clan tearing new ****holes all night long!

Not sure about getting the new GTA. Never owned a copy of any of them but have played enough on friends' ones and always get a little bored. Is there gonna be online capability with this one?

Just bought NHL 08 and it's ace! The graphics are amazing and the skill stick is sweet, even if I am bloody useless with it!!!

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Do the games of the PS3 have region locking or does it make sense to order online in the US ? For my PSP (no region locking) I regularly order
at www.cduniverse.com, now with the $ and chf at parity it is much cheaper than buying here. And the games are in English (plus lots are not
even out in Europe yet !).
But how is it for the PS3 ? Maybe I should buy a console in the US if I want to order games online?

All the games are region free, so you're able to buy them from anywhere.

Games normally play in whatever language the PS3 is set to, the only exceptions I've found are EA games, who have decided in their infinte wisdom, that we don't need the english language in europe.

As for PSN, you can configure several logins for your PS3, I have one for Europe, UK and US, you just need to supply an address in the country. You can then get access to the different titles available in the different regions. However, you'll need a credit card valid in the region if you wish to purchase games on PSN. Once the content is downloaded, it's available and playable by all users(logins) of the console.

Marvellous excuse for trading up to a PS3 ..... buts its a Blue Ray player not just a boy toy darling.

Existing PS3'ers can get this with next firmware upgrade, expected this month.

We bought a 55 euro upscaling (to HD) DVD player this week that plays divx/xvid content off regular DVDs. Got it in Marktkauf in Weil am Rhein. Our old "Zensonic" died just before we left, so we were in the market for another, and packing the other DVD player (not xvid compat.) without it's remote sealed it.

For true xvid goodness, I can personally recommend a "MediaGate" - we use ours just about every night. But there's hundreds of these things on the market now. Shove a big drive in it, load it up as you would a USB-stick, then plug it into your TV.

cheers,
(Mr)Wibble

PS> For the record, we're a Wii household.

You also have to be careful of whether they're PAL or NTSC.

Wii games are regionalised in this way, but (as far as I can tell) Swiss Wii games(PAL) play fine in our Australia (PAL) Wii - Although we've only bought guitar hero.

If you bought a PS3 here, it should be able to play any region of games, PAL or NTSC. PAL consoles and TVs can generally handle NTSC games fine, provided they aren't region locked, which no PS3 games are.

That's not quite the case either. Blu Ray discs can be region locked, but most are currently not.

In short, PS3 games are not region locked, if you have a model with backwards compatibility PS2 games are region locked, conventional DVDs are also region locked, and Blu Ray discs may or may not be region locked, but you can currently assume most are not locked.

If you have an Xbox 360, some games are region locked (check a site like play-asia.com to check on specific games), conventional DVDs are region locked, old xbox games are region locked, and HD-DVDs, assuming you have the attachment, are not region locked.

Perhaps the ones sold here - which doesn't come as much of a surprise since there's no need to region-encode movies that are sold 3 years after the motion picture was in the theaters and that cost 60 Fr. per film... On the other hand, close to all of the movies sold in the US are region encoded. Which also doesn't come as a surprise as everyone in his right mind would want to buy them from overseas at the moment thus cannibalizing local sales.

I bought a Blu-Ray player on bhphotovideo.com and had them send it to Switzlerland. That way I can buy my flicks in the US.
