UPDATE:

Just spoke to Sony CH. The situation isn't good.

They have no official repair centres, and wont recommend any non Sony ones (normal). You can send your old PS3 to them, with a cheque for 225chf and receive a repaired PS3 in the post, which only has a 2 month warranty.

It's a bit $hit really. Will consider finding somewhere in DE to send it to for repair now.
Hence buy a new one, mine died a few months back after 3yrs I had a original from release day. Ended up extracting the MW2 disk and binning the console. I really wanted to keep the original 60gb one. First thing I ever queued for

2 months is not enough for 225chf when you can get a new one for not much more.

I am trying to repair my 'secondary' PS3. If this isn't possible, i'll just make do with a primary one. If it is fixable, i'll take it downstairs and use it in my Hobbyraum.

Let's see how the laser replacement surgery goes.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Does anyone else find Gran Tourismo 5 moronic when you opt not to sign into the Playstation Network? You say No initially and then it asks you again twice before you can play. Heaven forbid you answer Yes, then it tries to sign in and then if you haven't updated your PS3 software in the last 27 nanoseconds it says you need an update and still asks you the same dumb quaestions 3 times even if you want to play offline in the first place. Grrrrrrrh,

Another gripe with GT5 is that if you save your settings after you have selected a music preference, it still ignores it. I went to music selection and seleted 'rock, and then deselected each sh77y track one by one. After all that effort (so many tracks and a tedious deselection method), I start a race and it's still playing lame 20th century (ie rock) music. Arrraaaaggggghhhh. So Annoying when you think how long it took to release. What were they doing in all that time?

Funny i was playing GT5 last night....

I agree it does not feel like a game they spent 5+ years developing.

I was expecting a really smooth polished game.

Need For Speed 1 is still the best driving game imo.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

There are a lot of things that GT5 does very well - the physics of the cars is excellent - and the current GT challenge online does encourage a smoother and more accurate driving style.

However, over all the game is far too easy. Looks lovely, plenty of cars etc etc

Now - wouldn't it be nice if you could plug the iPOD into the PS3 and play the music in GT5?

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Has any of you played Race Driver:GRID ?
This is a driving game (not so sim, but more arcade) by Codemasters.
They are a British Design Studio who, IMO, do games with excellent vehicle physics. They were one of the first with a complete damage model on racing cars with a game called 1nsane. It used to be awesome MP game back when I was in college.

BTW, got Infamous 2 on the weekend. Still didn't play it yet. I didn't want to spoil the story and want to finish Infamous 1 first.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

GRID is awesome, and it's really disappointing that there likely won't ever be a sequel. They had a solid foundation to build on and with more cars and tracks they could have made a racing game that put GT5 and Forza to shame.

Also worth a mention is 'Paridise City Burnout' or 'Burnout Paradise City' (whatever its called).

Although its not a 'driving simulator' like NFS or GT5, it its great fun.

I downloaded it free during the 'sony is sorry have playstation-plus free for a month' period.

Re: [General discussion of] PS3

Yesterday, I had to do a bit of R&D. (which is actually what I do on most evenings when I am not gaming. )

Anywho, I got a couple of region 1 dvds which would obviously not play on the ps3 or the xbox, or even the PC drive.

So, first idea was to rip / decrypt. I found a little tool to do this and tried it on one dvd and it worked.
Then I would need to burn the files to another disc, but I didn't have one at hand. Had to look at other options.

By accident, I found out that the VLC Player can play Region 1 dvds as well...on a PC with a Region 2 drive.
I was pleased, to say the least, and did my victory dance...which...I won't go into detail.

Next up, was the idea to stream the content directly from the drive to the ps3. VLC has also this option but for some reason it did not work.

So, some more searching lead me to TVersity and PS3 Media Server.
Both of them have really nice features. The latter ofcourse, works only for a PS3,
while TVersity, on the other hand...works for ALL devices on a network.
So, ps3, xbox, pc, smartphone...everything !

I still need to find a way to stream directly from the dvd drive, but I suppose this should not be too hard.
For a region 2 dvd this would be easy not be needed...but lets see if I can find something to stream content from vlc.

Updates will follow.

Nice..........i would have 'thanked' you, but the mods moved this thread to a non-thanking section

I have lots of TV Shows (Burn Notice, Entourage) & Films (about 60gb) from itunes which i have been putting off doing the conversion, so i can free up some space and make use of my 250gb PS3. I might do it this weekend.

Thanks.

The really cool thing about the ps3 media server is that you can browse your drives directly on the ps3. So basically you can see everything ! And share everything across the network to the ps3.

I am thinking on buying one of these sometime soon-ish
and together the above tools...it would work pretty well I think.

Have fun and lemme know how you get on.
