Browsers are also widely available, cross platform and free and have useful features like search. | | | | | But it's difficult to guarantee the way a document will look if you write it as a web page . . . cross-browser testing is a much greater task than just seeing testing in Acrobat Reader. The web was designed for hypertext, PDFs are just for professional looking static documents.

| | Re: The Apple iPad | Quote: | | | | | Surely you jest? That hated link that suddenly freezes your browser without warning.
Put it another way, what's good about it? | | | | | sort your browser out then. doesn't freeze on my computer.
what's good? it's free to read, what you see is what you print, universally readable across different platforms, free software to produce pdf files, everyone knows how to read/open the files, renders equally across platforms.

It's such an outdated idea that ignores the usefulness of the device it's being viewed on, most peole just print them out I guess.
I got an ebook reader for christmas, and I kind of like it, but the limitations of the PDF format it uses infuriate me. Why can't it jump between the notes and the text? why can't I do a search? It seems such a simple concept.

| | Re: The Apple iPad That's not as daft as it seems. We used our cats to lay cables under our floorboards when we lived in the UK.
The cats pulled through lengths of string and we attached the cables to those.

Ah, geek jokes, you've got to love 'em... | | | | | actually, the ethernet cables are numbered by the grading of the cat required to pull them through the gaps. e.g. standard ethernet (CAT5) requires a level 5 cat, whereas the newer cables for gig-e require an enhanced strength 5 cat (CAT5e cable) |

| | Re: The Apple iPad | Quote: | | | | | They do, and I hate PDF, but so many companies use it for docs and manuals, **** knows why. Most aren't searchable, can't be copied from (probably the favourite selling point) and are slow. Better than getting manuals in Word though. | | | | | That and Adobe Reader is extremely insecure. Adobe doesn't give a rat's a** about security - they patch their holes weeks after they've started to get actively exploited.

I'm honestly not impressed with the iPad but then again I wasn't impressed with the first generation of the iPhone too. Initial reviews online show it to be glitchy and lacking in structure.
I would personally wait for the second generation of this thing to buy it as Apple will probably bring a lot of improvements to it. That's what I'm doing with the iPhone 4G.

Now that they are for sale, has anyone taken the plunge? If so, initial thoughts?
