Re: The Apple iPad

I must say the Sketchbook thing is amazing... looks great.

Still, has anyone bought one yet? I was tempted to go into Digitec today to check it out.... but I was able to resist

Re: The Apple iPad

Go check it out, the better version is prohibitively expensive and it doesn't look quite as cool in real life as it does in these presentations imho.

To understand how a touch interface makes a difference, take a look at this Sketchbook Pro promo:

Wow - the Sketchbook Pro looks fun.
I'll have to get that. it reminds me of some of the elements of Photoshop, but with touch.
(so far we've just used our i-pad for surfing, watching some videos, and a touch program that teaches kids to draw letters. if I'm ever allowed time on it, there are some books I'd like to see as well.)

Re: The Apple iPad

They sell them at Digitec since Thu this week. I'm sure they have one on show. They ordered some from the US.

I might go and check it out after work today....

Re: The Apple iPad

To begin with, I like Apple products allot. My laptop is a MAC.
For me the thing with the ipad is that, Apple has to convince us that you can move forward with yesterday's technology. I mean if you just see the specifications of ipad, nothing is relatively new (not even thing about top of technology). For me ipad is a dedicated machine that it is not very comfortable to use for long time (you can not even put it on the desk in order to use both hands, your will have neck-pain in no time, and its big volume make's it less portable). Also is a new "platform" for apple to sell applications online. And this idea doesn't sound like a good music to my ears.

Re: The Apple iPad

I saw something a few days ago which basically said the same about Canada - no time off for staff etc.

That would make sense in terms of a co-ordinated worldwide launch.

The iPhone was/is based on yesterday's technology. It's all about the integration of hardware and GUI, which has made it the success it is.

This thread about the original iPod from 2001 makes interesting reading. (Sorry if it's a repost).

Dedicated in the way of a "machine" without a conventional operating system OS X (or OS X mobile maybe ?) that was made to be able to do some things only.
If it was a phone, that should not be a problem. But for a multimedia platform/internet breakthrough , and specifically at that price, I was expecting much more.

What multimedia and Internet stuff can't it do?

Flash . . .

The iPad will be used for:

- Media consumption - films, photos, music
- Web browsing
- Email
- Some productivity apps - art and music especially benefit from the interface

So it's not really dedicated to a particular purpose or selection of purposes. It's merely missing some functionality that mainly technical users will miss (e.g. a full multi-tasking OS).

Great just what the world needs, another freaking MP3 player. Go Steve! Where's the Newton?!

I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!
Why oh why would they do this?! It's so wrong! It's so stupid!
Quote:
$400 for an Mp3 Player!

I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional.
Quote:
Not exactly "revolutionary". With the economy in its current state, You'll be able to pick up MP3 players for peanuts soon.
- what year was this posted?? lol

etc etc

Well the iPhone has a terrific touch-screen that till today there is no competitor to it. By the time it was released it was phenomenon . No special pen was needed, when you are talking it doesn't get dirty from the skin, colors look great. Basically for a smart phone, screen is something very important. Also from day 1 Apple had available many applications (most of them for free).

And something else, iphone is a mobile phone. Ipad is not. A new mobile phone has to be very friendly and not the paramount of applied technology. But a tablet (which is closer to a computer) must provide the technologically edge.

Re: The Apple iPad

I'm warming to it as the specialist apps come out, here it is being used with Serato Scratch Live.

I just bought a MIDI controller for this exact purpose, admittedly it was cheaper than the iPad, but not as versatile.

Re: The Apple iPad

Just a question, someone mentioned no tabbing in iPad, does that mean when I, while reading an ebook, quickly switch to checking my mails could not return to the same position in the ebook but would have to load the program again ?

Well, a keyboard with very big keys, rotary knobs and sliders, all fully customisable, but yes, a keyboard.

Well frankly, I seriously think NOT to buy it. And I really like Apple products.
Time has the answer. Maybe I am wrong and things will go differently about iPad concept.
