And despite it being so rubbish (it did have a camera btw), it became a huge seller and did things no other phone did.

The iPhone revolutionised the phone market; if you can't see that then I have no idea what else to say to you.
Apologies, it didn't have a video camera. Neither did the 3G. A feature which Nokias had for years. Just because something is a huge seller doesn't mean it's an excellent product.

I used the 2g when it came out and it was painful. The browsing experience was terrible with only EDGE speeds. On top of that the price was $599 WITH A CONTRACT.

I got a 3GS. It ticked all the boxes for me. The 3G or 2G didn't. I am a firm believer that the 3GS was what the original iPhone should have been. I have since sold my 3GS for an HTC. I don't think that HTC would have existed in this form if it wasn't for the iPhone.

Equally I think the iPad will be on my shopping list, just not in this iteration. There are simply too many things missing. I'm not one for carrying an extra device around as well. If I did get a tablet it would have to replace a laptop. I don't want to carry a smartphone, tablet AND a laptop with me. But that's just me. That's my opinion. The iPad has its uses...but it's just not for me.

So this really comes down to what I'm trying to say. People have different needs for different products. Just because someone criticises apple products doesn't mean they are geeks who like to build their own PCs and dress up like Bill Gates. They are people who are striving for better products. I think Apple gets more criticism because the products are such a premium price when sometimes they don't have the premium features that people want!

Re: The Apple iPad

Did the iPhone really do something that no other phone has ever done?

As far as I know, it did bring an easy to use interface to the market, but phones in Japan still do a hundred things more than an iPhone does, right out of the box, and have done so for the past +5 years...

Some people don't unfortunately realise this :\

Re: The Apple iPad

No-one said the iPhone does everything.

It's better (in my opinion) to have a phone that does a few things much better than all other phones than to have one that is just ok at everything.

My conservative (and optimistic) guess:

Ipad @ Apple Store (Schweiz)
Wifi 16GB = $699
Wifi 32GB = $899
Wifi 64GB = $999

Wifi + 3G 16GB = $999
Wifi + 3G 32GB = $1199
Wifi + 3G 64GB = $1299
I was expecting the same - but for once, Apple has a positive surprise for Swiss customers. The iPad is only 15$ more expensive here than it is in the US. If you deduct the 30 Rp. per gigabyte SUISA tax from the final price it's actually cheaper here.

http://www.digi-tv.ch/off-topic/6212...html#post82807

The pricing is:

16 GB Wifi 649 Franken
32 GB Wifi 779 Franken
64 GB Wifi 899 Franken

16 GB Wifi+3G 799 Franken
32 GB Wifi+3G 929 Franken
64 GB Wifi+3G 1049 Franken

That's pretty much the whole point. Many people don't want their phones to do a billion different things. They want them to do a couple of things, do them well, do them easily and look good. This is, in my opinion, why the iPhone sells so well (in addition to a brilliant combination of subtle and flashy marketing).

Some people, unfortunately, don't realize this.

Of course, I say this as someone about to get an iPad, so my opinion is obviously a little biased.

They only offered Orange on the Apple site but as I have the Iphone with them anyway I would have chosen them over Swisscom.

It surprises me that Apple only bundles the iPhone with a contract from Orange - perhaps Swisscom was peed-off because they're not allowed to sell the device themselves.

Anyway, Swisscom would have been the better choice - their plans are cheaper and the coverage is drastically better:

Thanks for that, its a very useful table. I was flipping back and forth between Swisscom and Orange trying to work out who had the better deal.

Blimey, it's actually cheaper in Switzerland than most other European countries . . .

The wifi issues really are the last nail in the coffin for me. Browsing on 3G is a last resort for me. 3G just simply isn't quick enough for me to stay sane.
