Re: The Apple iPad

I spent a few hours today walking around Akihabara looking for the latest gadgets, as you do in Tokyo... but the gadget that was attracting the biggest crowds by far is the iPad.

I managed to play around with 4 other tablet devices in this huge electronics store. 2 of them ran Windows, the other 2 I don't know as I am not such a techie... they were all at least 20% cheaper than the iPad. They seem to have more features, more connectivity options, but in terms of ease of use, none of them came close to the iPad. The iPad is just so much more intuitive. Except for the multi-tasking part...

The only way I can describe it is that while the rest are "computers", the iPad felt more like a device for you to do certain things, like browsing, reading, viewing photos. And for a lot of people including me, computers are just a hassle to use.

Japan must not be feeling too well now... first the iPod kicked the Sony walkman's butt into history, then the iPhone is doing so well despite the fact that Japanese phones have been doing all these funky things long before the iPhone, and now, the iPad is the star in Akihabara.

I walked pass the Apple store in Ginza this evening and it was so packed, you have to queue to get in...

Re: The Apple iPad

Eh, you gotta larf. I now have "Receiver Not Home. Follow Up Action Underway." in my TNT tracking, which is well, untrue as someone's been in all day and even if we'd missed it for some reason there's no card in the mailbox.

It is really most awesomely sneaky to tell someone to collect from the warehouse, then during the 3-hour window the warehouse is (grudgingly) open send it out for delivery to maximise the chance that you'll be out.

I'm at the end of my tether about this. It's not that I have an urgent need for a shiny nerd toy (had the initial claim been "it'll be delivered on Monday" last week I'd have happily waited), but the hilarious and creative ways in which I have been repeatedly jerked around and lied to over the last couple of ways just take the biscuit.

And the Swiss customer service people don't work weekends - all the chap on 0800 555555 could do was request a redelivery for Monday morning (although he was helpful and friendly).

Now waiting nervously to see what the next move is... maybe just returning it to sender? Hell, if I could just tell them not to bother I'd just walk into the Apple Store and buy one, then tell TNT to send the delivery back.

EDIT: TNT DM'ed me on Twitter to say they read my blog post, they're really sorry about this and that Customer Service will be getting in touch with me on Monday morning. Kudos to them for paying attention.

Re: The Apple iPad

We've received the same message, "Receiver Not Home" in the tracking screen and had the same spiel from the German TNT office as everyone in Switzerland has gone home for the weekend.
Is it just TNT in Zürich that has struggled with the deliveries or is it Swiss wide?

Perhaps there is no option for the driver to write, ran out of time with all of these extra deliveries that I had

Re: The Apple iPad

It seems to have been mostly Zürich people I've seen having the more hilarious issues - certainly the couple of times I've dealt with TNT people via email or phone about this they've been friendly and helpful despite the fact that they're presumably deluged with people complaining about their missing deliveries so I don't think it's a company-wide malaise. Much of the quality of service delivered by a courier company is entirely dependent on the quality of service from the local depot, so regional variations aren't too surprising.

I look forward to hearing from their customer service people on Monday, anyway, even more so if they'll be able to give me some background.

i thought of buying one for my mum as an easy to use internet device. she won't even try using the computer.
That's sort of my hope too. She's missing out on so much of life because most contacts nowadays are via e-mail or web, to the extent that many organisations don't even advertise a phone number at all, but she absolutely refuses to learn to use a computer. I'm hoping a device that isn't a "computer" might bring her into the 21st century and there are some killer apps that might just help do the trick like IMDB

For myself, the sofa surfing is obviously going to be great, but where I think the iPad will score is travelling. I'm looking forward to being able to get local prepay sims so we can get access to www.passageweather.com when we're sailing (this is pretty important) and when we go to the mountains I should be able to at least view documents, and ideally edit them, without having to cart a laptop with me. The iPad screen is great, its wifi access is really quick (almost faster than the desktop) and there are some apps that are actually so good I wish they were available for a desktop machine too (e.g. iAnnotate for iPad).

Some commentators on the telly (Sky) have been saying it's just a media consumption tool so why not just get a netbook/laptop that does more. Well, I have to disagree. For a start some of the business and productivity apps look really good (OH is already using OmniGraffle for work on his), a flat device is much more user-friendly for reading books and much less anti-social to use on your lap without a screen between you and the other people in the room, the iPad is half the weight of my laptop and its battery life is at least double if not 3 or 4 times greater so there's not the same need to make sure there are power sockets nearby

I agree with you Eng_ch. Netbook does more... but more what? People who ask why anyone would need an iPad should instead ask why people need a netbook which does even more.

When I get back to Zurich, hopefully the initial craze has died down and I can get one. Then I can leave my laptop and books at home next time I travel.

Re: The Apple iPad

I was more than a bit surprised mine didn't arrive yesterday (and the girlfriend too, as it's actually a gift for her) but I gave a quick call to TNT this morning, who informed me it'd be delivered later today... 90 minutes later, there it was.

Neat toy. If you're going to use Facebook on it, use the "Sobees for Facebook" app - very sweet. The book reader is nice too, and I'm finding a couple other useful ones. And Epicurious (I'm sure I butchered the spelling there) is a great recipe app.

Anyone else find anything worth sharing?

Oh, and to the oh-so-helpful fella on the previous page: not all of us earn minimum wage. Some of us can actually afford to buy things we, you know, want, not just need.

Hmmm I feel that is addressed to me. It's true that I try to be as helpful as I can

Yes but why do you "want" one? That was my whole point. You want one because Apple has made you think that without one you'd be missing out on something. Clever marketing...but maybe not so clever buyers?

Or more like someone having the imagination to come up with a device that fills a niche we didn't know existed? The trend has been for making everything smaller and smaller, but there comes a point where things become too small. Laptops are too big to put in a handbag, the iPhone is too small to be useful in many ways - the iPad fills that hole.

I am sure many people on this forum have their own minds and might actually think, oh this is a cool product... I find it irritating now how the Apple haters just think people buy their products because we are sheep, I have been buying their products for 20 years because I like them, they are stable, reliable and innovative - does that make me a sheep who just buys into the marketing? My first Apple Mac was a beige box like all PC's were/are

Well there's that, but my point was that the iPad actually does do far more than just being a media consumption tool, so these anti commentators are rather missing the point. Plus the longer it's around, the more things clever peeps will find to do with it. I just need to wait for some of my favourite apps to be optimised...

Why am I buying a motorcycle this summer? I don't need one... but I've decided I'll probably enjoy it. Same deal.

I don't think I'm going to bother with a separate Facebook app, the screen is big enough to use the web version Adobe Ideas is rather natty, the BBC News app is really nice to look at and iAnnotate for PDF and iUnarchive are likely to be useful for work. Wikipanion is also worth a look

No IMHO it isn't. You will surely buy a motorbike because you enjoy riding it. Most people who have bought an IPad don't really seem to know what they are going to use it for yet.

Also supposing you buy a Suzuki, the next time a new Suzuki comes out will you be queuing at the Suzuki dealers to buy it? I doubt it.

Re: The Apple iPad

I don't think the iPad is useless. I've never used one so I can't comment. Next time I'm near an Apple store I will try one.

I don't think I will like it though. I think the screen is too small for a start. I like to type a lot and I think I will find the keyboard annoying. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing using more than your two index fingers and thumb will be difficult?

Like I said I've never used one so I can't comment until I have.

If I was filthy rich I would have ordered one though. But that's just me getting sucked into the hype :s
