There's just no market for this thing.
I love it when someone is so certain about things that really no one else is sure about yet.

Presumably you'll be putting your money where your mouth is and shorting Apple?

A quote from a woman regarding apple's new product
Well it is in fact nothing more than an upgraded ipod touch, but then a bit bigger. should they have called it: Ipod Touch XL?

but agree, with so many great designer, they could also have looked for someone with a better marketing texts.

A common misconception about Apple products is that they are computers. Wrong! I don't know of anyone who buys an Apple product and starts computing.

Apple products are media and creativity devices.

You use an Apple for computing? I keep mine in my living room to play media. And then I have Windoze and Linux for work.

A great motto which is grammatically incorrect. It should be think differently.

apple goes aggressive with the price... this will be huge hit
around 600 fr. for a device that won't do multitasking and won't let you install what you want? Also, books are 14.99$ while on the Kindle they're usually around 10-11$ (including wireless delivery - that's another 30-40 Fr. per month for the iPad).

I guess by "aggressive you mean "very expensive yet limited" or "typically Apple".

We buy Mac Pros a lot for computing.

This is the first version so expect to see a camera plus more on 2nd generation. Myself I think it is brilliant, most people surf, email, music, read books etc this will do it and nowhere as heavy as a laptop.
the problem with this device is that if you browse the web and in between want to type an e-mail, the browser quits. And vice versa. Unless they introduce multitasking on this thing, it'll be yet another expensive toy with little use. Sure, it'll sell a bunch because it's from Apple. Who cares if you pay 30% more for books on that thing than on Amazon. Who cares if you have to do your reading on an eye-ruining glossy screen. Who cares if you have to pay another 30-40 Fr. per month for letting you download the books on the go (something, that's already included in Amazon's ebook prices). As long it's from Apple, it's better!

Peter

iPad name draws feminine hygiene jokes

San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Punch lines about hygiene products flooded the blogosphere on Wednesday only moments after Apple Inc. announced it would call its new touch-screen computer the "iPad."

"The mocking goes along the lines of: Yes, the iPad is small, lightweight and slim. But can you swim with it?" wrote the Los Angeles Times' tech blog.

I use a Mac to connect to my Cray. Then I use my Mac to connect to our visualization cluster. It's basically a terminal.

I have used Macs for 'computing' for the past 15+ years

I have surprisingly made a living from using them as a computer and not just as a media station

Sorry Phos but a bit of a silly statement

Apple unveils iPad..

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/01/...let/index.html

Quote:
San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday unveiled the iPad, the widely and wildly anticipated tablet-style computer that he called "a truly magical and revolutionary product."
"What this device does is extraordinary," Jobs said. "It is the best browsing experience you've ever had. ... It's unbelievably great ... way better than a laptop. Way better than a smartphone."
The computer will act as a sort of missing link between the two. The model Jobs demonstrated at an invitation-only event in San Francisco operated without a hardware keyboard, withJobs typing on what he described as a nearly full-size touchscreen keyboard.
As an iPhone owner, I do not feel the urge to get an iPad. Sure the larger screen is attractive, but you can't carry it around like an iPhone.

Having a PC with internet at home, and an iPhone as a portable device, I don't need an iPad. Yet, it still might attract those who don't have a PC or laptop because they have been daunted by the interface. The iPad touch screen certainly makes things easier for these people, as well as the iPhone applications which will run on it.

Me, when the technology of foldable screens hits the market, allowing an iPhone to unwrap a large screen, I'll be content with what I have.

Re: apple, ipad !

Resolution (1024 x 768) is a bit of a disappointment. For those who want to view videos on their couch using this device, it appears that video decoding is as limited as on the Touch and the iPhone: only H.264 up to 720p and 30 fps is supported and that with the usual containers .m4v, .mp4 and .mov. This means people will still have to convert their content to be played the iPad.

I think there is a Padnetic one in development Tom.

I wonder, if you bought two, whether you could strap them to your feet. This would allow you to walk on water, which would be very impressive.

I guess this explains the fanBois divide, which I've never really comprehended: people working in IT must think they're the only ones using 'real' computers To the rest of us they're just competing, over engineered operating systems, which more than amply cover our daily needs. And 'i' hardware looks purdy, too.
