Again, not being able to charge off the work PC is a real pain.
It does actually charge off your USB port but a lot more slowly than when plugged into the 10W adaptor. I know it says 'Not Charging' on the screen, but thats only because the USB port's 500mA which is not enough to charge and run the iPad. But as soon as you switch off the screen the little critter is charging away. Some motherboards and newer Macs actually have a higher output USB port which can charge and run the iPad.

Re: The Apple iPad

I heard / read / stumbled upon articles that claim 16-24 hours to fully charge...???

USB3 maybe allows a higher draw, but the USB2 standards do not meet the hungry Ipad demand :-(

It's a hard one to swallow. Official advice/response is that you have to use the wall charger.

Re: The Apple iPad

If you want to convert and downloaded avi movies etc to play on the iPad, then iPad video converter does the job http://www.mp4converter.net/ipad-vid...erter-win.html
I tried it and then bought it. Nice bit of kit.

This iPad converter can decode just about all popular HD and SD video formats such as AVCHD (*.mts, *.m2ts), H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AVI, MPEG, WMV, DivX, MP4, MOV, RM, RMVB, ASF and 3GP, and then convert them to iPad 720p H.264 HD or H.264 & MPEG4 & MOV formats

By the end of the day, our iPad is often down to about 15-20% power (there are 4 of us sharing it, so it's pretty much on the go all day). We have two wall chargers, upstairs and downstairs, and just drop it on the nearest on the way to bed. Between midnight and 7am, it charges back up to 100% again.

The battery life is hugely better than on my iPod Touch, which I can drain in about 7-8 hours of something low-key like reading. The kids can hammer the iPad with YouTube videos and Angry Birds all day, and it still has a reasonable amount of juice left.

You could potentially save yourself $30 and use MPEG Streamclip instead.

Re: The Apple iPad

I did not stand in line to get one, never seen one, but I want one.

I do not have any other devices from Apple, appart from my favorative device, the iPhone.

I will walk into a store in the next week or two, and buy one (if available (and I am sure they are available)).

Reading the papers, books, browsing the internet, reading email, checking the market, weather, forums, latest news and heart rate - it appeals to me.

Not so sure about mom, though. She would probably try to cook it.

A handy app if you want to access your main machines HD (I think it works over the Internet as well as wifi) is 'AirVideo'. It streams avi movies straight to your iPad converting on the fly. I can sit in bed and watch all my tv shows even when someone else is using the MacBook. I have used 'Handbrake' to convert vids.

Does anybody have a list of favourite apps?

Re: The Apple iPad

It looked like they did in Media Markt in Sihl City the other day when I went - I was looking for signs saying available in 1 month etc etc, but it seemed that they were actually still buyable!

Re: The Apple iPad

One question - for those of you sharing iPads between several people - my wife and me both have iPhones, we would use he iPad a lot to read, reply our emails, check out facebook, our own webpages, etc. How do you handle this? Keep both email accounts in the device, log out abd log into facebook, etc? Isnt this a bad hassle? Any workaround I am not aware off?

Good luck! We love the thing - and at the moment, at least, it's a good conversation-starter at your local coffee shop.

Re: The Apple iPad

I'm not an ipad owner yet but I keep the imacs and my iphone in sync with mobileme from Apple. It works very well and it's great to find all my emails/docs wherever I need to work. For my business emails I just forward them to the 'me.com' address you get on signing up.

Just saw a demo of 'air video' streaming HD video from a friend's home PC to his iPad. Blown away, it is bloody amazing.

Yeah, I have a UPnP setup (based on TwonkyMedia) to do that. Works pretty well, and over the wireless-n connection, there are no real speed issues. I'm not really impressed with any of the UPnP client apps for the iPad (or any other Apple device), but there are a couple that work well enough.
