Re: The Apple iPad

Trying to solve a problm @ the office - namely toner use.
We're currently spending something like 700 Sfr per quarter (paper excluded). Mostly research and stuff my boss receives as PDFs and prints.
Just wondering if the idea of a "less paperful" (vs. paperless utopia) would be a "valid excuse" to buy one, since he's an Apple fan.

Any ideas from the current hardcore users?

Thx,

Paul

Re: The Apple iPad

I don't know how your boss works, but I like printouts because I can highlight or underline sections, make notes in the margin, mark pages with Post-It notes etc.

Until I come across a PDF viewer that can do that and save the results I'll carry on printing.

Do you use a colour laser only? I print to a monochrome laser whenever I can to save costs.

But Apple Preview *does* alow you to annotate, underline, etc.
My boss is pretty much old school: underlines the document and annotates by hand in a journal.
Many graphs contain too many colors to be printed B/W ... been there done that already :-/

I think the iPad would be more useful for things like powerpoint presentations rather than word documents/editing.. especially for sales people who want to present something to their clients on something fancier than a 'regular' laptop

Ah, I'm not with the latest version here.

Another problem I have is that I have a bit of a photographic memory when it comes to printed documents, particularly when I have made annotations. I can often remember whether what I'm looking for is on a left or right hand page, and sometimes how far up/down the page it is. I cannot do that on a screen.

Point taken about the graphs. All I can suggest is looking at price comparisons between printers for toner cost per page. We did this back in the 1990s and took the hit on the capital cost of a more expensive printer.

I'm pretty sure you can do that on adobe acrobat writer. You won't get that functionality on a viewer due to the name I guess

Re: The Apple iPad

i used to print 4 to a side duplex. saved a lot of paper, toner and carrying heavy packs of stuff.

would be great to have an A4 sized tablet for PDF viewing. the only reservation i have is how fast an iPad can render PDF. i get frustrated with rendering speed even on a 3ghz intel processor.

Used to do that, too.
Now I print less.

That depends totally on the way the PDF was created. If a power-point contained lot's of graphics that were converted internally into WMF/EMF, then the PDF-creation usually creates a lot of lines and objects just for that (educated guess, used to be case last time I looked).
Adobe's PDF-reader is also notorious for loading a lot of libraries that are not used normally, but take away memory and cost performance.
I'm glad with Preview.app.

The iPad, however, needs to improve document-handling (exchanging) and printing (no printing possible today...) before I would dare to hand it to anybody "outside" with the specific needs mentioned...

That's what I'm expecting iAnnotate for iPad to do (haven't had to use it yet). Check it out

Re: The Apple iPad

Is there any store in Switzerland sellingthe iPad that offers a money back warranty? In Spain if you buy in either FNAC or Mediamarkt, you hqve 2 weeks of time in which, if for any reason you want to return it, you can do so - even if you dontt like the thing. Does Mediamarkt or the Apple store offer this?

Thanks!!

Is Adobe writer an iPhone app? The only thing I can find on Adobe.com is Acrobat Standard Edition (and the Pro versions). The Windows version is a staggering CHF 605.

Re: The Apple iPad

There's an iPad app called iAnnotate that can annotate pdfs.

Review here:

NB: For pdf creation, you can use Pages, Apple's own document creation package

This might be the answer that Uncle GroOve was seeking.

I've been using the OS X Version of Pages since iWork '08 came out (now on the latest 09 version), and am very happy with it, but it doesn't help annotating PDFs you download.

I'm actually wondering how much impact iWork on the iPad will make on the format we use to exchange documents...

iWork for iPad: About File Sharing. There's a table there showing what formats the iWork components can import, then

Quote:
iWork for iPad apps will export to their respective iWork '09 for Mac format and to PDF; Pages for iPad will also export to the Microsoft Word (.doc) file format.
That looks like you'll need iWork on an OS X system to convert your Numbers and Keynote files to MS Office format...
