Re: The Apple iPad

Hi,

yes after the horrible chicklet type keyboards and now the touch screen keyboards you really can't get much worse. They are only really useful for short emails and typing in urls. With no movement or little movement in keys all that will happen is an increase in the problem of RSI. I have a lenovo keyboard and it is great with good spacing between keys and movement from each of the keys.

Just because it kindof works does not make it an improvement.

I would have thought the first purchase with ipad would be a keyboard.

Have fun
Martin

Re: The Apple iPad

A friendly advice: Do not buy a Swisscom connection with your iPad! (and molest a Swisscom "customer support" employee if you have the chance")

In case anybody cares to read it:

I picked up an iPad 3G on release date and decided to go for the Swisscom subscription, as they ordered a monthly price plan instead of the daily plans from Orange.

The iPad is perfect, the subscription drags it to an mediocre experience. First of all the Swisscom subscription is significantly slower than my Orange connection on my iPhone. This I could live with, but today I had the joy of spending 1.5 hours with Swisscom's customer "support" and still have a non-functioning connection.

Yesterday the 3G connection stopped working, and even though it has signal will not send / receive any data. No problem I call customer "support" (they really should rename it to something more accurate, maybe "Customer "We don't give a F***")

Talked to first guy (in English): He could not understand that I did not have a phone, and after 5 minutes explaining him what an iPad is he transferred me. After 5 minutes of waiting the line died.
Ok.

Next guy: Found the dedicated iPad help desk. Called, waited 15 minutes, introduced myself and the problem, the guy hung up.
WTF - was literally jumping up and down by now

On my third try I had the possibility to speak with 4 different, nice but equally incompetent people, who all did not have a clue about anything. Except saying their names and wonder how strange it was that I did not have a Swisscom phone - listen people, do not sell the bloody subscription if you cannot cope with the fact it does not include a phone number.
But you do not even have a landline? - No for crying out loud, I only have this one bloody product of yours and I am regretting it already!

Finally this undefined mass of incompetence manage to guide me a "service guy". He, with his incomprehensable technical insight can ask me to use the right access point. Gee Mr. Hawkins, that is such a great advice, I would never have thought about this in the first place. (first step in their manual to set it up).
And finally he can conclude that probably the iPad is broken and that I have to go to Apple. Of course because iPads often break overnight, it might even have been Al-Qaida who did. For sure it cannot be Swisscom's fault, because that is Swiss made..

1.5 hours wasted... and no solution found, not even close.
Anyway, besides blowing off steam. Buy Orange, help ruin Swisscom, and remember that when you buy a Swisscom product, God kills a puppy.

If you live in a densely populated area, that's not much of a surprise - the Swisscom network has lately been crushed by the iPhone (and other smartphone) users. I've been experiencing dropped calls and slow surfing speeds for months now. In the last two weeks or so, however, things have gone from bad to worse - surfing on the train while sitting in Zurich HB? no way. Calling people on the way from Zurich to Basel? Good luck.

Unless they update their network quickly, they'll end up becoming Switzerland's AT&T. Orange has a (far) worse coverage (especially due to the lack of EDGE) - the new secret tip seems to be Sunrise. A network that's not too crowded, nation-wide EDGE and good 3G coverage in the main population areas. At home I don't get 3G from Sunrise - but at least I can make phone calls. Since Swisscom killed one of their cell towers nearby (the building it was sitting on was torn down and they failed to get planning permission for a new location on time), I hardly get a signal anymore at home and end up (involuntarily) using the German networks - which gets freaking expensive and I'm getting very much sick of this.

Anyway - back to the iPhone / iPad: as with the iPad, the iPhones are sold unlocked in Britain (through the Apple online store). Let's hope they'll do the same here.

not planning on it - although I have to say: if Apple officially sells them unlocked at a price below, say, 900 Fr. , it'd be a heck of a lot more attractive than one for 350 Fr. + a two-year Swisscom contract. But I guess that'll be the reason why it probably won't be sold unlocked in Switzerland :-)

I wouldn't import one from the UK unless I could buy it directly from Apple myself. As opposed to the iPad, the iPhones still have no international warranty.

You can get the Applecare extended warranty that will cover the phone internationally.

They are available pretty cheap on ebay. Make sure you get one where they actually send you the box instead of just the code. Some people use code generators and you might get one which is already in use or will get used in the future....making yours invalid unless you have a box for proof!

Really? I was using my iPad on Swisscom between Basel, Zürich and Zug on Friday/Saturday/Sunday and got blazingly fast speeds, way better then with my iPhone on Orange. Ok it was largely out of commuter hours but I think it is unfair to compare to AT&T.

during the day it's fine. It's mainly an issue during rush hour when most people use their phones, me included. Also, Orange is a totally different deal from Sunrise - Orange have the worst network (by far) in Switzerland but charge the same prices as Swisscom. Browsing the web with Orange is a matter of pure luck. If you have 3G, it's ok, if you don't you're out of luck (no EDGE). Sunrise has an excellent network and they charge about 60% less than Swisscom and the latter definitely have massive problems with network overload during peak hours

According to the online-store, it's 7-10 business(!)-days waiting-time.
I doubt they have anything besides the demo-units.

That said, iTunes 9.2 seems to be available - the update applet just popped up.
So, at least I can get iOS4.0 on my 3GS on time.
To bad that you can't download hardware ;-)
