| | Re: The Apple iPad | Quote: | | | | | Just a shame it doesn't have a webcam, it would completely replace her other two items. Might be worth waiting for version 2 to see if they include one, or can you connect a stand alone camera to it? | | | | | Doubtful. From the sounds of it you should wait for Ver. 2 - what with iPhone 4 having facetime its a safe bet that they'll put a cam into the next iPad.

since adobe killed flash for 64bit linux, i've realised how much flash is used. youtube, facebook videos, etc. not all are replaced with HTML5 yet.
i find the functionality so critical that i'm actually going to re-install a new OS to get flash functionality. do iPad users notice the lack of flash?
i can't wait until flash is dead.

But seriously, I think flash is used at too many places to be replaced so easily.
Granted HTML5 and CSS3 can do a lot of good and interesting things, but there is still a long way to go until they are a suitable replacement for flash.

| | Re: The Apple iPad | Quote: | | | | | I guess I am looking for honest reviews of current owners and the anwser to the 'would you buy it again' question. | | | | | After almost a month of ownership I definitely do not regret the spend.
As a reader device it ticks all the boxes (books, newspapers, magazines, RSS feeds, web clippings etc..). As a coffee table web browser it also works very well with its instant-on and smooth, fast rendering of web pages. However I'd knock off about 3/10 for its lack of Flash, because for me its simply a reduction in functionality, and its only when you surf a lot using the iPad that you realise how ubiquitous Flash really is. Thinking about it, I would also like to see tabs in the Safari browser, instead of having to zoom out and see all the pages.
For typing short emails its fine, however editing documents is a major pain. The lack of cursor keys and the tricky nature of select/clip/paste makes it a lot easier to do on a netbook. However if I did have a lot of writing or editing to do I'm not sure I would do it on a Netbook unless it had a particularly good keyboard.
So all in all its a good third device (after PC and laptop), however I wouldn't recommend one as a substitute for a laptop. Edit: The lack of support for WMV, Divx etc.. is another PITA since you need to convert all your video files to MP4 for it to play on the native player.

Agreed, I have noticed how much of the stuff there is, but thank goodness I have it blocked by default. | Quote: | | | | | i can't wait until flash is dead. | | | | | Yep.

Castro, the Atomic browser has tabs, you could use that instead of safari.

What Apple have banned is the running of interpreted code on the iOS platform. Browsers need to run java script these days and that's considered to be interpreted code.
The way round this is to execute any code on the server side and then pump the results to the device running iOS. Opera mini got round this restriction by doing this, as I would imagine the Atomic developers have.

| | Re: The Apple iPad | Quote: | | | | | How the frig do I set up the 3g? I have the orange sim and all that but now what? | | | | | Did anyone order the orange 3g card online?
If so, did you received a "phone number" with it? I havent been able to get it sorted. When I called Orange they asked for the number but I do not have it.
Any ideas?
Unless it was on the bit of plastic the sim card was connected to (which was thrown away) Im lost

If you take the Sim into the Orange shop they might be able to work out. At least you'll remember next time to keep important items/documents as the SIM pin is also on that piece of plastic, which you will need to use the card.
