After considering for 2-3 weeks i went to a Manor store yesterday and got one of the 3G + Wifi one. Went to a local Swisscom store and converted my SIM to a micro SIM and got an adapter, both completely free and instantly No stopping now :-)

If only they realised that it can't make calls so it's obviously not a giant iPhone!
That's an interesting one - if you could make calls you would be on your way to the first real PDA. That would necessitate apple making headsets, or some other such similar. Will they?

Re: The Apple iPad

You can make Skype calls on the iPad, as it has a built-in microphone.

Headsets? I don't think they need to. The earphones you get with the iPhone at least have a microphone as well. So any third party earphones would work as well I'd imagine!

Good point but I have the feeling that to force that market segment you need a device to do it - the prize is of course the entire mobile computing market as people have figured out that one only needs about 5 applications to work on the road.

A great motto which is grammatically incorrect. It should be think differently.
you're obviously not thinking different (-ly, if you insist..)

Re: The Apple iPad

Update time

iPad 3.2.1 update hits iTunes

The iPhone iOS 4 isn't the only operating system from Apple to get an update on Thursday. The iPad has got a host of fixes too.
The new 3.2.1 update, which is rolling out to iPads around the world as you read this, promises to improve Wi-Fi connectivity, amongst other things.
The fix comes after some users initially complained that the tablet from Apple struggled to find a Wi-Fi network around homes - in some cases even though the device was practically sitting on the hotspot.
Other smaller fixes include:

- Fixed an issue that could prevent copy and paste of single-page PDF attachments in Mail.
- Address an issue that could cause video playback to freeze.
- Improved reliability of video-out when using iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter.
- Added Bing as an option for Safari's search field.

iPad users are being automatically prompted to update when they connect their device to iTunes.
There aren't details within the update to suggest that 3G models will also be getting a change for the way the "bars" are shown on the device.
If you've downloaded the new 3.2.1 update for the iPad, let us know if you spot anything different.

Does anybody else have any issues viewing embedded YouTube videos via their iPad? I've had a look and the videos don't seem to use flash.

I don't have an iPad, so I'm not sure . . . but I've signed up to YouTube's HTML 5 beta. Would that help you avoid Flash or is Safari on the iPad not up to that yet?

According to Apple's iPad ready page:

Quote:
iPad features Safari, a mobile web browser that supports the latest web standards — including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Here are just a few of the sites that take advantage of these web standards to deliver content that looks and functions beautifully on iPad.
Incidentally, I've just got a new PC at work and everyone tells me that Flash doesn't work on 64 bit Windows. Early days, as I'm still finding my way around the thing, but I can't say I've missed Flash one bit so far

Thanks for that link Paul. Here's Adobe's statement on Flash with 64 bit operating systems.

It appears that by Adobe's own admission, they have fallen behind in this area of technology, which rather affirms Jobs' concerns. Lowest common denominator and all that.

I also note that Adobe are calling Apple's operating system "Mac OS" rather than its proper name of "Mac OS X". This lack of attention to detail on an official web page doesn't really inspire confidence.

Re: The Apple iPad

Just noticed that digitec have the 32GB wifi iPad in their clearance corner for a very reasonable CHF 699 (compared to CHF 779 in the Apple Store).

Re: The Apple iPad

Not sure if any other iPad users who surf the ef have this problem, on occasion I unintentionally hit the thanks button when scrolling.. I hope I haven't done the same with groans. I have managed to catch some unintentional thanks but I doubt I have caught them all. Oops!

Not being able to edit replies where the reply has a long quote within it... That's my bugbear with the iPad.

Also you cannot hover as you can with a mouse pointer e.g. hovering over the title of a thread to get a sneak preview

Re: The Apple iPad

Ive never been into the Apple hype before. The only thing Apple that I own is one of the older Ipods. Although my boyfriend did buy me an Ipad knock-off in Hong Kong for the equivalent of 40 CHF :S
