Re: The Apple iPad

This is my iPad review.

I picked one up in Interdiscount mid December, and opted for the most expensive model. It was faulty from the get go (touch screen went heywire every other day). Two weeks later I take it back to Interdiscount, and they say: Go to the Apple store by HB. I say: Why can´t I just get a new one, this one is faulty? They say, perhaps if it was less than a week old, and still in original packing. I say: Ok, and take it to the Apple store by HB.

Apple store: I wait forever to be told to go elsewhere, find the "repair desk", take a ticket, wait my turn, and then the technician does not belive me. How can this perfect machine, the most perfect machines of all perfect machines, fail? It is just not possible.

They also tell me Interdiscount has to accept it within 14 days, packaging be damnd. Mine was 16 days. I hand over the new, very expensive version of the iPad, and they promise it will be fixed in 2 to 3 days. Ok, I say, 2 to 3 days is good, and I will get a text message on my iPhone when it is ready.

Pick up: Text message on iPhone. I swing by the Apple store on the way to work. It opens at 09:00. I show up at 08:00 and have a full English breakfast at HB (to cure a hangover). Go pick up the machine. Ask cool Apple tech guy at counter if they just re-installed the operatinng system and left it at that. Cool guy says No. Technician spent countless hours working with this machine to make sure it did not go "haywire". I take possesion of the machine. Go to work. Go home. Set up machine. Machine goes "heywire".

Back to Apple: Show up early the next morning. Cool guy remembers me from the evening before. I point out that they did not fix anything - and then the iPad goes "haywire" on the counter in front of cool guy.

Apple does good: Apple techie tells me he did not belive an iPad could fail, but entrusted me with privelaged information, that actually two other iPads had failed the day before. I get a new iPad.

New iPad: Finally, I have a working iPad. Still working out how to use it. So far I have tried: newspaper in the morning with the cerial, as a TV, I can see; TED, iTunes U, HBR, OU, Freakanomics and comedy. I have a book or two, downloaded Kindle, and stored a few important PDF documents (books, articles) for later reference.

Biggest Disappointment: It does not charge through a USB port. It requires a socket. The battery lifetime is good (ca 4 days) but requires an electrical socket to charge.

Conclusion: Buy the cheapest iPad available. You will never use 3G or local storage, as the data is stored in the cloud anyway. You already have a computer in your pocket (iPhone/Android/Symbian), the iPad is for indoor use and is supplimentary - until you figure out how to use it.

Re: The Apple iPad

Not really a review.

And surely the iPad purchaser should do some research first to decide which type would suit themselves.

P.s. There's a new version of the iPad out in a month or two (with camera, better screen) so if anyone else is thinking of buying one, I would wait a bit.

Re: The Apple iPad

I got an iPad for Christmas and haven't used my netbook since. I am totally hooked. I never thought it would be so useful (I don't have an iPhone).

I spend a lot of time on planes and airports and for me it is the ideal companion for this. I can catch up on tv-series and movies, read books I've borrowed on my local library, play Angry Birds and listen to music at the same time. The only downside is that I now mainly read on the EF rather than write since it is not really convenient to write long texts on the keyboard when you have long nails. Although I have to say, the keyboard is a lot better than I though.

I'm not terribly techie so may have misunderstood, but by 'through a USB port' do you mean it doesn't charge when it's plugged into the back of the computer, as you would do to sync it? Because mine charges when I do this. I don't think it's very quick - I usually leave mine overnight - but it definitely charges; for example it went from 51% to 100% last night.

This is the first version so expect to see a camera plus more on 2nd generation. Myself I think it is brilliant, most people surf, email, music, read books etc this will do it and nowhere as heavy as a laptop.

When you compare iPad compared with kindle this is better value for money.

The wife has a iTouch which I think is a great little device but too small for really surfing or doing any serious work on, I think the iPad is a much better solution to dumping the laptop.

Apple has a video posted on the iPad here: http://www.apple.com/ipad/#video
Love mine. Bought it exactly because I wanted "something" I could take with me on trips without the hassle of a laptop. It's so light I forget it is in my carton. It allows me to keep in touch via email and social networking. I can also watch movies and listen to music. I dont have to take it out when going through airport security either. Sooooooo much easier.

Complaints? None, other than I seem not to use it unless I'm on the road. But if I am going to a cafe or out to dine alone I take it with me for something to do besides stare at people.

Camera? Don't care. Phone? I saw a lady using a phone app on here iPad in Tokyo. Not sure how she did it. Looked just like the iPhone interface
Multitasking? Don't care there either. Probably the only thing I don't like is that I can't play World of Warcraft on it, and that's probably a good thing.

if you jail break it you can do pretty much what you want with it, inc using it as a phone (if you want to look really stupid)

You can multi-task with iOS 4 (free update). When iPad is plugged into iTunes just press "Check for update".

It does charge via USB, but not while the screen is on. Once the screen goes off then it will charge.

A standard USB port is 5W and the iPad needs 10W to charge and use the screen at the same time.

- Not every iPad owner has a smartphone.
- If you want to watch (lots of) films on a plane, you will need local storage
- If you're taking your iPad out and about, you may well want a non-Wifi connection

Not everyone's requirements or desires are the same . . .

Re: The Apple iPad

I was going to wait for version 2, but then I found out I'm having chemotherapy first - maybe in the next week or so, so my husband bought me a 32GB Wi-Fi version last Friday (need a distraction)

I really like it, I've got lots of apps, lots of relaxation and health monitoring things, bubble popping games, audiobooks and music. Also the HD version of Angry Birds. Pathetic, I know.

I have to make sure I clean the screen though because it does get very smudgy. The interface is a little different if you're really used to the iPhone. All in all though, i think it's great and I'm enjoying it. If the next version is really fabulous, I'll just give this one to my sister when she comes to visit later in the year.

The one thing I really want is a voice to text program, but you can only get that if you have a US account (I use Nuance's naturally speaking on my PC, and they have a free app, dragon dictate available for the iPad/iPhone, but only in the US) So I'm going to set up a US account when I get my act together.

I'm trying to move my research library over from my PC - but it's not quite working - I use endnote on the PC and sente on the iPad, and it's supposed to work, but it sort of isn't. Fortunately, my husband has a mac and I can probably transfer to the mac first and then sync.

I think the iPad is a great way to read - books, research and newspapers. THe kindle is probably better overall, but it doesn't do enough other stuff for me. Streaming video is fine, and I use skype on it as well - both work if you have a good WiFi connection and are ok without a camera on your end. It's too big and clumsy though to use as an actual phone out on the street - hence no 3G for me.

The games are fun too. I do seem to crash my apps every so often, but it's a lot easier to restart than on the pc.

some apps don't appear to close properly so do seem to crash things after a while, turning it off rather then on standby clears it up. when safari crashes (large pdfs etc) then that seems to really screw em up.

all in all it crashes less and needs less reboots then my pc, and is a million times more reliable then my windows smart phone.

good luck with the chemotherapy

Some larger apps (and games often are quite big) will make the internal memory overflow -> the app closes. Happens to me a lot, not only with games but also with 20min online etc. Most developers know of the problem and will eventually release updates that fix it.

I'd also wish you the best of luck with the chemo and a speedy recovery,

Peter

Apple (AAPL) is said to have a new version of the iPad in production, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The new version is reportedly thinner and lighter, with a front-facing camera.

looks to me like this is another one of those upgrades where you pay 899 for a 5$ camera. If they had actually upped the screen resolution, that would be worth it, in my opinion. But just for the front-facing camera that everyone already has in their cell-phone, I don't see the point. I'm personally more interested in the new Honeycomb tablets

The processor will no doubt be faster, rendering the iPad1 obselete within a year (like with the iPhone).

well, hopefully it's faster - if Apple doesn't deliver a dual-core processor system, they'll fall behind the Android pack.
But as with the iPhone 3G -> 3GS transition, you really have to ask yourself if it's worth the upgrade or if it's better to skip that one and wait until April 2011.

Nah . . . iPhone's generally have a two year (if not three) typical use span. This is recognised by firms that offer two year contracts.

I skipped straight from an iPhone 3g to an iPhone 4 without getting a 3gs.

But yes, the new iPad will have a faster processor, more storage and will be thinner. It will probably also have a narrower screen bezel.

The only thing that would convince me to upgrade would be a higher resolution screen and lighter weight. Clearly a high res (retina) display would render it more expensive and need beefier GPU to control the extra pixels so i don't think it will happen. All the other stuff e.g. USB ports, camera etc.. are of no consequence.
