it's pretty much just an ipad with dual core processor and a couple of cameras.

now it checks 2 features on a matrix when a shopper is compares it vs another tablet.

iPad2 is thinner, sleeker and sexier.

That's the thing about the Apple lines. They keep coming with newer, faster and better products that quickly devalues what you just recently bought. As much as possible, I don't buy the new product line. I buy from the previous line. This is a habit from using Apple in professional environments. New apple on the bleeding edge could have defects, where second line Apple usual have their defects worked out, not to mention it is considerably less expensive than the current models.
Usually for items such as the iPhone there is a year cycle. Same for iPods.

But wouldn't say the products are devalued in monetary terms. Apple resale is great. I don't buy items with a view to sell them on though. I buy what I think is best and what I like best.

Are you getting one Gastro?
I'm tempted, but to be honest I have other budget priorities and my next IT purchase will probably be to replace my four year old MacBoook Pro (with another Macbook Pro).

Then again, they're so reasonably priced I can see myself purchasing one on impulse in an airport.

i expect there will be. ipad2 looks like a defensive release to stop android tablets eating away at market share.

it's pretty much just an ipad with dual core processor and a couple of cameras.

So an iPad is just an iPad? What do you expect it to be?

Are you expecting a revolutionary change every year?

It's just their yearly release cycle and they do what they can at that price point. The camera ain't great, but they figure most people won't want to take photos using a tablet. Higher res would have been nice but that would have pushed prices up too much.

That's the old version. They're just clearing stock before the new ones arrive.

For sure, but this is one time where the new version doesn't blitz the old version. (I still much prefer my iPhone 3 , just for the better looks. Will not get an iPhone 4)

So compare the price of this iPad v1 against the current competitors, it's a bargain.

no need to defend apple! you're repeating my point: it's just an incremental revision - nothing revolutionary. i don't think apple think it needs cameras either, they just want feature parity for comparisons. i think a more substantial revision is to come.

Re: The Apple iPad

I apologize for cross-posting, but was hoping someone could help me with my questions - the guy at the Apple store here in the US was fairly useless.

I will be relocating to Switzerland this summer and am planning on buying an iPad 2 here in the US (it was released today). I am assuming we will use the ipad for the following purposes -
  1. DVD player for kids during long car rides/plane rides
  2. Surfing net in the living room
  3. Hooking up to TV with HDMI cable to play movies from iTunes and Netflix
  4. Laptop when traveling
  5. eReader?
  6. Games
After speaking to the rep at the local apple store, I think I want a 32 or 64 ipad with 3g. He says this will enable me to have 6+ movies on the iPad. I assume I would want 3g to make it easier to use as a laptop (when I had my itouch with only wifi, finding areas where I could access wifi was a hassle, ie dr's offices, transit, etc).

So my main question is, how does it work when taking an ipad from the US to Switzerland? I was told the tablet is locked into ATT, and therefore I would be paying outrageous fees from ATT for roaming when using 3g in Europe. How do I go about getting around this? Forgive me for my naivite, but I am not very well versed in the IT realm when it comes to these types of details!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

I've decide to get my wife an iPad or iPad2 for her birthday. Where is the best place to buy it with good customer service vs. the least expensive price?

Re: The Apple iPad

A refurbished Ipad 1 from Apple stores is the best bet if you are looking at cost-benefits and customer service. The ipad2 is nothing better other than the front and back cameras.

If you want to buy Ipad 2, I guess the prices will be the same in the near term no matter where you buy it.

Re: The Apple iPad

I decide to get a used iPad 16GB without 3G. I found one for CHF350 with a 1 year warranty. I'll just try to resell and buy an iPad2 when they are available.

Regarding 3G, instead of getting a separate SIM for the iPad, I thought I would tether to an iPhone instead. Has anyone tried this successfully and satisfactorily?

I suppose I would have to jailbreak the iPhone and load a Hotspot app. Any recommendations?

not tethered it to an iphone but to my sony, had to jailbreak the ipad then use a new bluetooth client on it, works really well, no issues at all. the bluetooth client is on the 'alternative' apps store

If the phone is a wi-fi hotspot, the iPad should be able to connect without jailbreaking, no? Do you find Bluetooth to be faster or more reliable?

I get the impression Bluetooth typically uses up more batteries, but that might be the older BT implementation.

With iOS 4.3 on an iPhone personal hotspot/tethering is built in and gives Bluetooth, WiFi and USB options.
