Make sure you rehearse your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices. With 12 possible SKU's your ideal iPad may have already run out by the time its your turn.

I have a sunrise data plan, 45fr for unlimited (throttled after 10GB). Not sure if it's still available. 3G coverage is also spotty like Orange. Swisscom is much more reliable if you really depend on being connected.
True, but Sunrise at least has EDGE, while Orange doesn't (yet). I think Swisscom's plans are too expensive whereas Orange is cheap but has a crappy network outside of the greater Zurich area. I wouldn't recommend Sunrise, either, after what I went through with their customer service - so the choices are very limited :-)

In any case, I wouldn't go with a subscription - when I had the iPad 1, I had to find out that I was using much less data on the go than I thought I would. I ended up going with Swisscom's 19 Fr. for 300mb option and that was plenty for me - but after a couple of months I gave up on that as well and went with another service:

If you don't spend a lot of time on the train with the iPad and have commercial WiFi hotspots nearby, another option might be Boingo - boingo.com offers unlimited global WiFi roaming for iPads for around 7.50 Fr. per month, can be cancelled at any time. I've been using that for about 2 years now with my cell-phone and am very happy with it.

Keep us updated throughout the day if you are bored. is the queue getting a lot bigger? are they feeding you snacks?

i might head down after work to see whats what but have the feeling that they will sell out within hours.

edit: by the way, what is your first choice for the ipad? white or black. size? wifi or 3g?

Re: The Apple iPad

question for ipad owners.

if you have the 3g ipad, how does it work with for example swisscom. i see that for chf 19 per month i can get 300mb data. but as i understand it, there is no long term contract so how does it work at the end of the month. is the subscription renewed automatically? how do you turn it off if you decide you wont need a data plan for awhile?

Re: The Apple iPad

I have an iPad 3g. My mobile phone is with Orange & they give out a second SIM for the iPad linked to your main account for free. Surfing is "unlimited" and is charged by the day which is around CHF3.50 so basically you only get charged when you use it which is great if you hardly ever do so like me.

Re: The Apple iPad

Right, so if you used the data service for ten days a month you would spend chf 35.

However, my mobile is with swisscom and i would probably stick with their data plan. i made a post a few days ago about whether i can just get a second sim but no one answered about how that works. as far as i found out, i can get a second sim from swisscom but it costs chf 10 per month just for the sim. so im not really sure about that, i think i am better off going for an independent sim for the ipad and not using it every month. but i was just wondering about how the contract then works, i.e. does it auto renew?

Sory my batery is almost empty.
Have 27 ppl in front of me and so far in total they have around 200 people.
Ill get a pre-paid sim karte for tge ipad cause i dont really use 3g but is goodto have an option ill probabily go withoramge csuse my phone is also orange. Maybe ill merge they togheter since i have 1gb per month and i use less than 100mb per month. So should be enough for the ipad/iphone.

Have you asked them if they have "enough" for everyone?

As this isn't a subscription, the 19 Fr. will buy you one month of service during which you can use a maximum of 300mb of data. If either your 300mbs are used up or the month is over, they'll let you know (don't remember anymore if by e-mail or if you actually get a pop-up on the iPad itself).
Once you insert a Swisscom SIM in the iPad and hook it up to iTunes, Apple will install a Swisscom-specific menu in the settings pane that will let you top up from within the iPad. Pretty sophisticated, really

yup. that's it. if you top-up 100chfs, they give you 50chfs credit. plus first top up via SBB gives you 5chfs credit. this pushes down the effective monthly fee by quite a bit! (i'll let the maths geeks work it out).

the only downside is the 120mb limit. fwiw, i haven't reached this since a lot of the time i am on wifi. in theory, i could also wifi tether to my sunrise phone which has a bigger 250mb limit.
