Re: Can an Ipad fully replace a laptop?

Depends if you're a consumer or a producer. For the former, possibly. For the latter, definitely not.

Advantages of iPad: instant on, all day battery life, mobility
Disadvantages: lack of power/functionality

Horses for courses.

Also, what do you think are the pros and cons of an Ipad?
I think if you google the question you'll come up with about 5,350,000 results..

By the way I've got an iPad.

in addition to my Mac Book Air, Mac Book Black, iMac and Mac Pro.

If only the Mac Book Air had 3G..!

Re: Can an Ipad fully replace a laptop?

Replace a laptop - not a chance in hell from my viewpoint.

If all you want to do is email, a bit of web browsing, the odd game, and mess around on facebook then it'll do, but it's a toy, a very powerful toy admittedly, but nevertheless still a toy. Basically it's an iPod touch with a bigger screen, faster processor, and an inability to put it in your pocket.

For anybody who wants to be productive then even a basic netbook would be a far better choice, and it would be cheaper than even the low end iPad.

It's a fun little thing, but it's a long way from being able to replace a laptop for general use.

Re: Can an Ipad fully replace a laptop?

Well, it won't replace the laptop in the market place but it can replace the laptop for your personal use depending what your personal use is. If all you do is surf the web, respond to emails and othe basic functions, then yes, it could replace it. If you have need of working on complex spreadsheets or high end gaming or installing 3rd party software from cd etc. then no, the iPad won't replace the laptop.

After short pondering: in my eyes, as long as it merries functionality of fast browsing on the EF with ability of fast copy-paste YouTube and images altogether, there is no doubt it will fully qualify as the EF complaint machine
Anyway, other than that what else would you want to use the laptop for????

Re: Can an Ipad fully replace a laptop?

it's basically a consumer web-browsing device. if that's only what you use the laptop for, then it would be a great replacement for light browsing. but it is much slower than a PC. don't expect to be using many tabs or have access to certain flash content.

for me, it's not even a good email machine due to lack of portability and no physical keyboard - mobile phones score better in this respect.

I love the email, even OS X is taking many of it's features in the new version of Mail in Lion.

Yes, the on screen touch keyboard is useless for us who can actually type with more than just 2 fingers so for that reason I have a keyboard which I bring along if I need to do some serious typing on my iPad (the main reason I wish the MacBook Air had 3G).

(are you listening Cupertino..?!)

Sorry but I can't let this one go. I spent £600 on a "luxury" netbook from HP a couple of years ago (4GB). My only excuse is I wanted to use it for lightweight programming when away from home and too lazy to carry the main laptop, and HP were promising a Blu-Ray player add-on shortly after launch (they lied!).

18 months later I bought an iPad.

I got more use out of the iPad in 2 weeks than I'd got out of the over-priced netbook in 18 months.

As I said in my original post it's very simple. I've yet to find a netbook that can run for 10 hours each day on its battery or be "instant on" the way the iPad is. That's even before taking into account the portability aspects. With Dropbox and Evernote and a ton of other applications there's no reason at all you can't be productive on an iPad and I'd argue I'm far more productive on my iPad than I ever was on my over-priced netbook.

It won't replace the laptop yet for sure but it sure is no toy, used correctly it is a fantastic tool for meetings, connectivity and work to avoid traipsing a full laptop about. You still need the main computer at the moment IMHO, but as an add on WOW!! Also they are still in their infancy, this is the way it is going...look at all the clone tablets coming out, who talks about netbooks now?

Re: Can an Ipad fully replace a laptop?

Thank you folks for the informative input. I can see both, the pro and the con aspects of an Ipad. I am generally for the Ipad and I even get loads of use out of my Ipod Touch, for which I could technically use my laptop for, but the Ipod is simply easier to use and much quicker. The only downside I'm seeing are the lack of keyboard (which can be resolved quite easily) and a word program. I am however certain, that there are some decent document typing programs out there for the Ipad.

Re: Can an Ipad fully replace a laptop?

I actually tested this for a week or so because I really really wanted to be able to replace my laptop with the Ipad. For 2 weeks, I used only an Ipad to do the things I normally do online at home - Skyping, surfing, messing around on Facebook, English Forum etc and emailing as well as the odd movie and reading books on the Kindle app.

I was able to do all of these things, and evn installed the app which lets you watch Flash content so there wasn't really anything that I couldn't do. The speed with which Ipad starts, the way it doesn't overheat (as opposed to my overpriced overheating and constantly crashing HP which I only just bought), the graphics and admittedly, the sheer sexiness of the thing were all big selling points for me.

However, what tipped the scales in favor of picking up a new Mac Book after all was that you can't multitask. I love switching around tabs when I'm browsing - have a chat conversation on my email, as well as perhaps Facebook and Skype and then browse some other website at the same time. Without interrupting your flow, you can't do this on Ipad because there's no tabbed browsing. Sure you can use pop alerts for FB and Skype, but it's just not the same. Oh yeah, and Gmail chat doesn't even work (or apparently only some of the time as I learned when looking into the issue).

Still sorry that I wasn't able to replace my laptop with an Ipad - now I have no real excuse to get one, but loving my new Mac

zx81 had 1kb of ram as standard, why would anyone need more?? but just in case you did it was a 16k ram pack

as for ipad replacing laptop, not a chance, I have both, the ipad is excellent but there is just stuff it can't do, and was never supposed to do to be fair.

Re: Can an Ipad fully replace a laptop?

Putting aside my all around hate for everything Mac wise, in my personal use of a laptop, an IPad (as it is at the moment) will never substitute a laptop.

As Slaphead said, it might be a fancy thing to browse on the internet, read an e-book and become a member of the herd that screams on the phone "HEI, DID YOU HEAR? I BOUGHT THE NEW IPHONE!" just to make sure no one missed the point. But on more complex situations (for example in my work field), the IPad misses the functionality aspect.

I'm somewhat of a contrarian at times and by no means, would I just run with the herd. My observations are, that Apple products seem to be much more userfriendly and the products seem a hell of a lot sturdier than anything I've ever head before. In terms of usage, I think an Ipad covers most aspect of my daily computer needs and I'm seriously thinking of getting one.
