Re: The Apple iPad

ok my thoughts on, apart from being locked to apple.

Its too big - you'll look a real tool carrying it around or using it on the train etc, should have been no more the 7 inch screen

connectivity - unforgivable, should have wifi, sd, usb, tv out at the least maybe even get bluetooth in there.

I really can't see what you would use it for?? if it where smaller you could use it as satnav in your car, or a jukebox, or somthing to keep the kids happy on a long journey etc etc. Your not going to be able to see the screen very well in direct sunlight so it fails as an ebook

It will sell by the bucket load, but I suspect it'll end up in a draw never used after the first week.

Re: The Apple iPad

It will probably be used as I increasingly see laptops being used, lounging around the house, surfing the web, watching movies. It has the advantage of not being technically off putting, as nearly everyone now knows how to use an iPhone.

The walled garden is one of it's selling points, as well as it's disadvantge, all apps *should* be checked to make sure they won't cause unexpected problems.

Also, just think how many steps and choices you actually have to go through to download and watch a movie on a PC (And don't kid yourself, think of each and every mouse click, each and every choice you make, each bit of software you had to install before you are at your current setup), These simply will not be present, is it worth the price you'll have to pay to apple for the functionality?

64gb?! Not much?! Books take less then a couple of MB each, I have 10gb on my iPhone allocated to music and that is 1700 songs. Films would be 700 mb I'm guessing? How much Media do you need?

Er the iPod app? Have you ever used an iPhone? They just mean that you won't be able to run Safari in the background with streaming software.

I'm not getting embroiled into this thread trying to stic up for something that I'm not going to buy, but it sounds like some people should establish a few facts before they judge something.

Well I've got 20 GB on my iPod and once I get round to uploading all my cds it'll be around 40.

No I've never used an iPhone which is why I asked

A work collague is a massive fan of it and is planning to buy it. He showed me the promo video of it. None of the accessories you shown were mentioned in it. If they want to sell it to me it's up to them to show me why it's so much better than a normal laptop not for me to find a reason to buy it.

I may be buying an iPhone soon but up till now I see no reason why I should dump my laptop for this when I only use it at home

you log on open the movie and it plays in windows media player, which comes as part of windows.

in linux it plays in mplayer.

you can download vlc if you want for a universal format player it takes a few seconds.

I know apple provide everything in their cosy world but the age old "you have to reboot it 400 times just to play a music file" attack is just no longer valid now. I wish people would argue on an even playing field.

Anyway the thread will be closed now because its an apple windows argument.

bye.

Next time an Apple product is discussed on here I'm going to start a sweepstake on how long before it degenerates into this same old pointless argument.

It wasn't meant as an attack on windows, more computers in general. You missed the steps of finding and downloading your movie and putting it somewhere where you'll find it again.

I could simplify for myself if I just got everything through iTunes I guess.

Re: The Apple iPad

Well I can say one thing - Apple have got the marketing right. If, for example, Nokia released a gadget with exactly the same capabilities it probably wouldn't even warrant a post, let alone a meandering 100+ post thread.

Bored already.

Yup, but more of a hobby cause I want to use my apple as much as possible.

So what kind of computing do you actually do?

A great motto which is grammatically incorrect. It should be think differently.

Not really. "Different" is a noun in this usage - the domain of the alternative. Not an adverb as such.

You kind of have to think differently to get it.

Er . . . it does have wifi and bluetooth. It has an SD accessory. And there's some kind of TV out too.

welcome to the end of the keyboard.

input devices will be the biggest change in the next 10 years and this device is Ground Zero.

WiFi+3G for me, please. Actually, WiFi+Bluetooth so I can tether to my 3G BlackBerry

Agree, I think a lot of people will not realise at first how much of a game changer this really is.
This seems like the iPhone. The US had never heard of a touchscreen phone till the iPhone, even though they'd been around for over 5 years. Apple comes along and everyone is agog.

So here's what the iPad can do :
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8484823.stm

But I already saw these style (Windows) devices last year eg HP Slate and the like on the BBC Click TV programme. These should include better connectivity and less locked content than Apple's offering.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programme...ne/8460792.stm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8444672.stm

Even the Click presenter Spencer Kelly (or is it really Richdog ) today (who already showed the HP) is interviewed under a heading "iPad 'tears up' laptop rulebook" and seems won over even though it's the same technology (probably with a more fun interface) than previously announced products from the competition.
The joke is, he said that the thing that's going to make this iPad amazing is the availibility of a wait for it....portable keyboard and kick stand to make it just iike a PC.

Re: The Apple iPad

probable misstep on apples part if you ask me, although later generations of the ipad may prove more useful.

neither replaces my laptop nor my iphone. this renders it defunct from my point of view.

i am a renowned apple lover. i like the way things are going, for example the touchscreen friendly ical, but its way not revolutionary enough for my liking. tame.

If it was magnetic, I'd buy one and use it as a big interactive fridge magnet.
When i saw it i wanted one. After i read the reviews i changed my mind. After reading this though im thinking of buying the cheapest one, put a couple of magnets at the back and sticking it to the fridge. At cat-eye level

Re: The Apple iPad

Fujitsu calims the brand:

Apple may be headed for a dispute with Fujitsu over the iPad trademark. Fujitsu applied for the iPad trademark in the U.S. in 2003, a year after it unveiled its own iPad, a handheld device designed to help shop clerks with inventory, sales, and price checks. ďItís our understanding that the name is ours,Ē Masahiro Yamane, director of Fujitsuís public relations division, told the New York Times. Features of Fujitsuís iPad include a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, an Intel processor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and VoIP telephony. ďMobile is a keyword for Fujitsuís iPad, too,Ē Mr. Yamane said. ďWith the iPad, workers donít have to keep running back to a computer. They have everything right at their fingertips.Ē
The United States Patent and Trademark Office listed Fujitsuís application for the mark as abandoned in early 2009, but the company revived the application in June; soon after, Apple began filing for an iPad international trademark via a proxy company, and has since filed requests with the USPTO for more time to oppose Fujitsuís application. According to the report, Apple has until February 28 to state whether it will oppose Fujitsuís claims to the iPad name. Notably, Apple faced a similar situation with the original iPhone, as that name was held by Cisco at the time; the two companies eventually negotiated a settlement. Fujitsu is a current component supplier to Apple, providing the company with laptop hard drives for its MacBook line of notebooks.
