The Apple iPad

Hi guys,

There's already an Apple thread, but I didn't see one related to the ipad, been watching the live blog with interest.

What do people think?

Do we need a bigger itouch? Does it lack the innovation we were expecting? Is having a bigger itouch a cool idea for ebooks? And .. are you going to be buying one !?

I agree, it's early days. Won't be rushing out quite yet, as a share holder I'm interested in the market reaction and it really seems divided at the moment.

Re: apple, ipad !

This is the first version so expect to see a camera plus more on 2nd generation. Myself I think it is brilliant, most people surf, email, music, read books etc this will do it and nowhere as heavy as a laptop.

When you compare iPad compared with kindle this is better value for money.

The wife has a iTouch which I think is a great little device but too small for really surfing or doing any serious work on, I think the iPad is a much better solution to dumping the laptop.

Apple has a video posted on the iPad here: http://www.apple.com/ipad/#video

Hmm, the jury is still out with me. Very Star Trek and impressive from the video - but what practical use, or more to the point what kind of practical use at work that can't already be provided with a better and more flexible experience with a laptop. It's exactly what I expected it to be, purely for entertainment. And you can play frisbee with it when the battery dies.

Interesting that Apple is producing the main processor as well, looks like they do not want to be held back by anyone, that is going to be a blow to Intel.

Agree, they are going to be selling these by the truck load.

Depends what your needs are, when I am travelling I just need a browser and an internet connection. I would rather be lugging an iPad than a laptop anyday. iPhones whilst nice do not have much screen real estate. All the rest of what it does is just a huge bonus to me. This is half the price I thought it was going to be so for me I do not even have to think to buy one and try it.

Re: apple, ipad !

Good model, but it failed short of my expectation.

This one is basically for people who haven't shelled out their money yet on an iphone and doesn't mind a model of bigger size.

It will also meet needs of people like me who doesn't own a mac air, but wants to meet all their surfing and basic office functions. But still have to know what all are missing in this model and how much ibooks will be priced in general. For the short term, I see lot of online stuff adapted with cool new features which will make ipad a real entertainment system. Best course is to wait for 6 to 7 months after the launch and i have a hunch apple will release a better one with camera and lot of new features.

The real killer for me is the price. 600$. Almost comparable to an iphone.
So, all **** who doesn't have an iphone, ENJOY your latest gadget

welcome to the end of the keyboard.

input devices will be the biggest change in the next 10 years and this device is Ground Zero.

WiFi+3G for me, please. Actually, WiFi+Bluetooth so I can tether to my 3G BlackBerry

Agree, I think a lot of people will not realise at first how much of a game changer this really is.

Re: apple, ipad !

Didn't see any of the press conference yet. Options include 3G and wifi and iPhone OS, so does that mean I can use it as a phone? If so, does one use a bluetooth headset? I like the idea of less keyboards...and wish that voice input worked better.

Not sure if I am ready to spend US$800+, but maybe...I have bought a lot of Mac gadgets lately! But I am not really an early adopter. Will wait to hear how others are using it.

Re: apple, ipad !

I'm impressed and would be interested. I'm surprised there's no camera for simple videoconferencing. I'm also curious to know what will happen with Skype, as (as far as I know) the app at the moment doesn't allow you to call over your Wifi connection.

A few moments of that video made me cringe though. "I don't have to change, it changes for me" and this talk of "magic" - all for what is just a product.

Re: apple, ipad !

I am missing skype, voice and camera.

Anyone looking to buy, should buy the 3G model. The other one is stripped to the bone to show the 499$ mark.

Re: apple, ipad !

The Wifi/BT one is enough. Who needs it to be a telephone? 3G is data-only - but stop thinking in 20th century terms..... you have interconnectivity and a softphone and you have what you need.

The iPhone has been the most groundbreaking device (not just phone) of the last 10 years. I don't have one but I do know how it works and what it brings together. Consider mashups as applications and songs - and then as a device. Something for your pocket. Look someone up on the internet or GPS and then call them. Simple yet marvellous.

This I think will be just as big. Not quite as groundbreaking all-round but that KEYBOARD, that input device, it is LEGACY - pure and simple.

I don't want a Kindle. I have a netbook and don't use it that much. But I actually want one of these....

It's an Internet Consumption Machine. The Internet is a commodity today and we like it.
