The Apple iPad

Hi guys,

There's already an Apple thread, but I didn't see one related to the ipad, been watching the live blog with interest.

What do people think?

Do we need a bigger itouch? Does it lack the innovation we were expecting? Is having a bigger itouch a cool idea for ebooks? And .. are you going to be buying one !?

I agree, it's early days. Won't be rushing out quite yet, as a share holder I'm interested in the market reaction and it really seems divided at the moment.

Re: apple, ipad !

This is the first version so expect to see a camera plus more on 2nd generation. Myself I think it is brilliant, most people surf, email, music, read books etc this will do it and nowhere as heavy as a laptop.

When you compare iPad compared with kindle this is better value for money.

The wife has a iTouch which I think is a great little device but too small for really surfing or doing any serious work on, I think the iPad is a much better solution to dumping the laptop.

Apple has a video posted on the iPad here: http://www.apple.com/ipad/#video

Hmm, the jury is still out with me. Very Star Trek and impressive from the video - but what practical use, or more to the point what kind of practical use at work that can't already be provided with a better and more flexible experience with a laptop. It's exactly what I expected it to be, purely for entertainment. And you can play frisbee with it when the battery dies.

iPad name draws feminine hygiene jokes

San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Punch lines about hygiene products flooded the blogosphere on Wednesday only moments after Apple Inc. announced it would call its new touch-screen computer the "iPad."

"The mocking goes along the lines of: Yes, the iPad is small, lightweight and slim. But can you swim with it?" wrote the Los Angeles Times' tech blog.

Love mine. Bought it exactly because I wanted "something" I could take with me on trips without the hassle of a laptop. It's so light I forget it is in my carton. It allows me to keep in touch via email and social networking. I can also watch movies and listen to music. I dont have to take it out when going through airport security either. Sooooooo much easier.

Complaints? None, other than I seem not to use it unless I'm on the road. But if I am going to a cafe or out to dine alone I take it with me for something to do besides stare at people.

Camera? Don't care. Phone? I saw a lady using a phone app on here iPad in Tokyo. Not sure how she did it. Looked just like the iPhone interface
Multitasking? Don't care there either. Probably the only thing I don't like is that I can't play World of Warcraft on it, and that's probably a good thing.

Apple unveils iPad..

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/01/...let/index.html

Quote:
San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday unveiled the iPad, the widely and wildly anticipated tablet-style computer that he called "a truly magical and revolutionary product."
"What this device does is extraordinary," Jobs said. "It is the best browsing experience you've ever had. ... It's unbelievably great ... way better than a laptop. Way better than a smartphone."
The computer will act as a sort of missing link between the two. The model Jobs demonstrated at an invitation-only event in San Francisco operated without a hardware keyboard, withJobs typing on what he described as a nearly full-size touchscreen keyboard.
As an iPhone owner, I do not feel the urge to get an iPad. Sure the larger screen is attractive, but you can't carry it around like an iPhone.

Having a PC with internet at home, and an iPhone as a portable device, I don't need an iPad. Yet, it still might attract those who don't have a PC or laptop because they have been daunted by the interface. The iPad touch screen certainly makes things easier for these people, as well as the iPhone applications which will run on it.

Me, when the technology of foldable screens hits the market, allowing an iPhone to unwrap a large screen, I'll be content with what I have.

It does have a keyboard (like an iPhone) which works fine if you peck type like a chicken but for us "all fingers on the board" types it's pretty much useless.

Apple sells a keyboard with charger station that works very well.

Or you can easily connect the wireless (Bluetooth) Apple keyboard to it.
