German Family Granted Asylum... In America!

Did you know that MILLIONS of Germans went to the United States in the 1800's and there are more German descendants than either England or Ireland in the United States? Well guess what. It's happening again because of the continued oppression in Germany. That's right. The state that thinks they are "all knowing" and basically want to turn all the kids into good little socialists do not allow parents to home school the children. Imagine! Free thought! no more social conditioning!

So guess what happened. A German family goes to the United States, and is granted asylum. This is a HUGE victory for human rights and our right to not be oppressed by the totalitarian state any longer. Know some Germans who want to get the United States? Send them this link and tell them to quote the judge.

Re: German Family Granted Asylum... In America!

Homeschooling. I'm not a fan of it myself.

I know many American mothers who homeschool. Mothers who have a degree in teaching do exceptionally well with their children. Mothers who homeschool due to "power" or "Christian values" are not doing their kids a favor.

One homeschooling mother took her kids to McDonald's and was trying to teach them a lesson on something. She noted to us gleefully, "That's the magic of homeschooling. You can teach them anywhere!"

Because many States (countries) lack appropriate measures to test the progress of homeschooled children, I am generally (not always) against the idea of homeschooling.

Well, prefer a cat over a dog, but otherwise, isn't this describing us here in CH ?

Re: German Family Granted Asylum... In America!

Homeschooling is a rarity for Switzerland. With all the expat families coming to Switzerland, it's conceivable that many mothers would rather homeschool their kids than send them to expensive international schools or local schools.

However, where's the accountability that homeschool children are indeed getting an adequate education?

Re: German Family Granted Asylum... In America!

My friend lives in Arizona, and he and his wife homeschool their kids.

They have to check in with a monitor to make sure the kid is making
progress. The kid has to take the same tests as in the Arizona school.

There is monitoring in some states I know. And yes, they are religious.

Re: German Family Granted Asylum... In America!

If I was afraid of a government that thinks it is "all knowing" and collects information of its citizen, I guess I would choose a different location to settle down again than the US.

Human rights are not a one-way street: Not only parents have them, kids as well. And a government has the obligation to take care that parents do not violate their kids rights. There is no human right to home school or to have class at McD. There are plenty of different schools available: You are religious? Send your kids to a school run by a church. You believe in alternative schooling, there are plenty of Walldorf, Montessori and what do I not know type of schools in Germany. There are very conservative schools or ones which follow progressive curriculae.
The only thing the state ensures is that kids cannot be brainwashed by parents with paranoia similar to yours.

Re: German Family Granted Asylum... In America!

The story of this family has been cropping up like a undead zombie for the last few years.
What is not mentioned here is that the parents are wingnut batsh*t crazy religious freaks of the worst christian fundamental and fanatical sorts, actually I am surprised that German social services have not long taken the children into care.
What they are doing to their children in the name of their god is tantamount to child abuse.

And to the OP yes, I did know. Did you know that the US came within a gnat's breath of voting for German as its main language? Lot's of interesting facts, but somehow I don't think there is going to be a mass exodus to the US.

Now, calm down and take a reality check.

I imagine that these folks wanted to move to the US and found a handy loophole to exploit. They could easily have moved to the UK (although who'd do that !?) where home schooling is allowed. Let's see if in a couple of year's time they haven't sent their children to school in the US...

So they'll fit in nicely into the US bible belt then

Does that now mean that I can claim asylum in Monaco because I am being persecuted by the Swiss authorities for not wanting to pay tax.

This really is pathetic and it shows what a complete dumb **** some people are (this statement is not aimed at Zurcher)

Re: German Family Granted Asylum... In America!

I have no problem with the idea of home schooling if it's done 1) for the right reasons, and 2) well, 3) in parallel with with other social activities like sports clubs, etc. where the kid can meet other kids his age. I don't know how often this is the case, but probably not enough.

Public schools in some parts of America are so terrible that it's actually a viable choice for many parents. I think we'd like all home schooling parents to fit the stereotype of religious of freaks who want to isolate their children from the devilish influence of society (and this is still probably the case for the large part), but based on the home schooled kids I met while I was in America, I can't say that this was my experience at all.
