I believe in tipping as a way to supplement low income jobs like waitering, hairdressers, taxi dirvers etc. Tipping isn't mandatory, and you can always ask for the "service charge" to be removed if you don't approve.

You need to rethink your beliefs... tipping is a hidden tax that the food service industry has conspired to levy on the consumers. It has nothing to do with supplementing low wage jobs... The burger flippers at McD are equally low wage but do not get tipped!

Waiters should be paid their due wages by their employers and that cost should be reflected in the cost of the food sold. Why should their wages be left to your generosity (or meanness, as the case may be)?? To make it worse, the IRS in the US ássumes'that all wait staff make a certain amount in tios and taxes them on that assumption... which is why they expect (nay, demand) a tip .. which puts paid to any notion of it being a reward for good service..

Every one has some kind of "being cheap" quirky ways, I think. Sometimes being tightwad actually means being reasonable.
I am cheap, I have no problem with eating leftovers. Most home cooked food gets better with age. It could be seen as cheap, whatever. A friend of mine would not touch the food any longer if it got warmish and was not hot anymore and she would just dump it. In her world, the family deserves only freshly made, hot food. Some people's stomach turns when we talk of buying second hand toys, clothes or furniture, I don't mind at all, they probably think I am the biggest cheapskate.
I agree. There is nothing better than leftover pizza for breakfast

Re: What is being cheap for you?

“Being cheap ” depens on the person to what he/she attachs importance to. In my opinion “cheap person” is a person who does not hesitate to sell every value she/he has for money. Or merely as an example, if the only thing what you give importance in your life is the things entering into your stomach, your value, too, is as much as the things getting out from your stomach….

Re: What is being cheap for you?

I was always taught to finish my plate, and not waste food.

Personally, I think if we all learn to be a little more conservative with the resources we deplete from this earth, it might just end up being a good thing. So all this food that goes to waste is just a really bad showing on behalf of us humans. So someone who doesn't finish a warm plate of food is just a waster...

Absolutely no problem in preparing something the next day that was only half consumed the previous day, as long as it is something that can safely be consumed afterwards

for me a person is cheap when he dominates the person standing in front...just to hide his/her own weaknesses.....
someone who can not stand up and accept his/her weakness
someone who is something else in front of everyone and someoneelse otherwise...
Yeah that's being 2 faced, I can't stand that! I like people to be the same way in front of everyone.

Doesnt whether such an action is cheap really depend on the financial situation of the person selling the clothes?
It's hard to judge someone as cheap when you don't know wht their financial situation is like. Now if you KNOW the person has money and they do certain things then you can say oh that's cheap but just looking at the act alone without knowing their financial situation you cannot tell if they are being cheap or are really that broke.

they might not have money for this.. and they could just save little bit for this outing
Exactly! Some people without much money may manage to save what they think is enough to cover the bill and a tip, but they might have underestimated the cost so they only have enough for the bill itself. That's why it's hard to really judge cheapness u nless it's someone who you know for sure what their financial situation is.

the actual wire in her bra ripped through the side of it, and it used to actually hurt her, but she refused to buy new underwear.. ugh!!

When you have big boobies these can happen days (even hours) after using the bra for the first time, or so I have been told

So when people have a different oppinion than you, it is rubbish?

Well my rubbish oppinion would be that Danieluk states a fair and reasonable argument. At least in the German part of CH sevice is included, and the purchasing power of these so-called low income jobs is not bringing them near havig low standards of living.

Tipping is, to my mind, something you give as an expression of gratitude - not the god given right for poor service. Fine by me if you have another oppinion, but please do not call others' for rubbish. - and remember tip next time you buy groceries (at least 10%), the clerk is in the low-incom
Thanks for the groan, it was my first! Not particularly special mind

You have mistaken my banter with a friend for a personal attack. I guess you couldn't have known...but I would question why you groan when he doesn't first? Maybe I'm just over sensitive having my groan cherry stolen by someone I don't know

Anyway, back on topic, cheap is dodging train fares in Switzerland

Another one is to buy budget milk and bread 50% off (because it's the last day when it's eatable) when it's your turn to buy groceries...

Oh an other one;

When you have a get together and organise a potluck and the same person always does a salad at every single potluck (lettuce, few cucumbers and tomatoes) While they others spend time, money and energy to prepare a nice meal...

My dear mum god bless her, reuses cling-wrap. After covering something up in the fridge she will wash the plastic film let it dry and then re-use it when convenient.

She is the true eco-warrior!

Breakfast of champions! That and left-over refigerated Kentucky Fried Chicken or should I say KFC (it sounds less fattening), something about all that grease being chilled and reheated that makes it delicious.

I do get stuff when it is on discount or 50% but try to use it the same day, not with milk or my husband would kill me but I do that all the time, especially if I am not the one paying, I want to save hubby a buck
