They all stared, pointed and laughed (well, they stared)

I stumbled on to something interesting with regards to Swiss women in the surrounding areas over the last few days. I'm often shifting between Zürich, Winterthur and Canton Thurgau (I refuse to name the city, because it doesn't deserve that title), where I work.

I often don formal clothing (attire button downs, slacks, occasional tie, wool blazer) at work, but whenever I'm off and visiting/enjoying m'self in other cities I'm in jeans, boots and so forth. Come summer I'll never leave the home unless I'm in surf shorts and sandals.

Recently, I've had to leave work and go apartment hunting in the evenings in my business clothing. I noticed that women seems to stare when I'm a little dressed up. I was a little shocked yesterday when a girl on the street went as far as to wink at me when I had my wife by my side and was holding her hand. Now, this has never happened to me in Switzerland when I've worn informal clothing and I'm by no means an attractive catch (ask my wife). I know I'm generalising, but I'm wondering whether the local women (I think they're locals) are shallow enough to be attracted to merely money.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is it because we're in/around Zürich, and anyone dresser like a banker appeals to local women?

To anyone that sees me and continues staring, then you ought to know:
1) You need glasses, or;
2) Don't be fooled, appearances aside, I'm broke. Always have been, always will be....

Yup, there is a noticeable proportion of ZH women who are looking for a banker to support their lifestyle. It's fairly obvious at bars and clubs. Has been to me since I switched from announcing myself as a PhD student to being a banker.

Could she have had something in her eye? Could she have been winking at your wife? Could you have imagined it (my dog winks at me too)?

You might just consider taking it in stride — i.e., enjoy it, and move on. I don't think it's just Swiss women, as I've received winks and pretty smiles in a number of places. They can brighten your outlook for the rest of the day without becoming anything more at all. Not even bothering to second-guess their intentions, I'm happy to enjoy the moment and the lingering thrill of simply having received such a signal.

BTW, my dog winks at me too, but it's not quite the same.

I don't know if it's a banker thing or just a "man in a suit" thing. Certain women are attracted to men in suits... and the related "men in uniform."

Perhaps there's a bit of, "Hey he might we wealthy!" attached to it.

I have to say that no matter where we are in the world (Chicago, London, Zurich), my husband gets hit on when he dons a suit. Not just hit on, but these plasticine women are all over him. He's a good looking guy, but not THAT good looking. He's also a nerd. We laugh about it frequently.

I'll admit with the statement that some women do take a fancy to men in suits/uniform. However, I've worked in Manhattan and London in the banking sector, and have been spruced up significantly more, but have never noticed people paying so much attention, I often found girls in the US liking a laid back upper-middle-class cowboy. I just found the glances a little unnerving, considering their frequency....

Re: They all stared, pointed and laughed (well, they stared)

I have another theory.
I have personally experienced that the way you dress changes a lot the way (Swiss?) people react to you.

When I first started working in Geneva, I worked at the Morgines Business Center, where you had the Compaqs and Microsofts and the Nortels and IOmegas.

I was still trying to find the right mix of formal dressing for the Swiss workplace and my first day I dressed up in a formal suit as you do.
The receptionist gave me a sweet smile and a "bonjour" as I entered the building. So did the other people I passed in the building.

A few days later I was in a semi-formal attire and she kinda ignored me. I thought she was just busy (and I didn't care either), but it was interesting reaction, so I decided to test.

The next week, every alternate day I wore a suit and the next day a semi-formal attire. It was regular as clockwork.
Suit day = sweet smile and a "Bonjour"
semi-formal (possibly un-ironed shirt... the horror!) = Ignored

I found it amazing.

I get that crap too. Everywhere I go women do be starin' at me, winking and generally trying to get in my pantaloons.

At least, that's how I choose to see the world

Re: They all stared, pointed and laughed (well, they stared)

Apperance matters

Though a guy is bad in heart, but dressed up neatly, people thinks him as a good person (as 90% of people judge one by their apperance).

My husband mostly used to wear semi-formal dresses. Two weeks before, he had an interview in Zurich. So he went in a very formal dress (suit, tie). In the evening, he told me that while going in train (from Basel to Zurich), a young gal (not sure about nationality) sat next to him and talked to him nicely asking about his job and personal details.

While returning back, he got an old man (probably Swiss), who spoke to him with great respect and interest. Generally, old man with high professional looks, never minds to speak with people from outside

Well I don't get women winking at me. But when I am in a suit my skin color seems to matter less. That I have noticed and I am not just being paranoid... Somehow it is not about who you are but more about what you are... My dilema since living in CH is which do I mind less... Predujice due to my skin or one due to my atire??!!
