Granny Bag

For 3 years living in Zurich I have resisted buying a roller shopping bag to load my groceries in-- the kind that well, the more mature ladies are often seen using.

Problem is, I am a non-car owner, and my back can no longer take the torture of lugging groceries back and forth. The solution of getting my items delivered also doesn't appeal to me because I like to pick out my fruits, vegetables and other perishable items out personally.

Should I take the plunge and go for one of those granny bags on wheels? Or in doing so, have I succumbed to, well, you know, being perceived as an old fart?

Re: Granny Bag

Get one in a funky color and get cool stickers. Skulls, reptiles, flames. Glow in the dark.

Hey, maybe there is a market for funky granny bags. I never knew they were granny bags. We bought one right away because we didn't have a car when we first moved here. Mine is boooring, basic black.

Re: Granny Bag

I had one in Paris; after the first embarrassing shopping trip you will come to love it. There is an enormous choice these days, I think it even comes in Chav.

I am starting to get excited about my new accessory....any ideas where one can find some "funky" styles in the Zurich area?

Re: Granny Bag

i love my little granny bag. i don't have a car either and it makes life so much easier, though at this point i think if i had a car i'd use one anyway.

we have a great one we got in france- it has outside pockets for individual wine bottles (of course ) and honestly makes life so much easier i couldn't care less how i look when i've got it- i'm sure lugging around four bags full of cans, veggies, detergent and whatever else looked much sillier.

go for it- and there are some really cool looking ones- don't know where for zurich but here in lausanne you can get them anywhere.

Re: Granny Bag

I have one - they do funky ones now - afraid I bought mine in the UK though so not sure where you'd get a cool one in ZH.

We could start a new trend

Re: Granny Bag

Here is a site with different looks: http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Fashion,...opping-trolley

It's worth it to get good quality and I found having a detachable bag was of no interest- I could never lift what was in it once it was full (stairs were still easier with the frame and wheels).

Get it in Ferrari red or British racing green and add a couple of rally stripes.

LOL! Go for it! Nothing to be ashamed of at all! I see people of all ages use one. Plus if you don't use one now you'll be walking like a granny from overworking your back carrying the heavy bags! I say get one!

Re: Granny Bag

If you search for "einkaufstrolley" it should help your search for something relatively local (or shippable locally) to be a bit easier.

The one I have was "purchased" with Coop super-points... it's got a sort of tropical print and can be folded up to be carried within another bag. I like how convenient it is to take with me, sort of like I'm not "lugging" it both directions.

On the other hand, because of this, it doesn't have a rigid back and depending upon what I'm carrying it is a bit heavy on my wrist.

Even so, it makes my trips to Aldi a lot more comfortable. (I do not buy enough at Coop or Migros to need it there anymore - now that there is a nice Aldi on a convenient bus route.)

I thought it was illegal to get one's fun bags out in public?
