This is definitely the kind of thing I would be up for, but not this year as I've completely rinsed my holiday allowance
In terms of buying a banger for the trip, you might have better luck getting one from the UK. The cars come with plates and the exchange of ownership is performed on the spot. You can insure it to the furthest point of the trip e.g. Southern Spain and then pick up insurance from Tangier Port for the onward journey.
However you do need to be aware of the formalities of bringing a car from abroad into Gambia. In Morocco for example, your entry visa and passport details are tied to the car so when you leave the country they will want to know where it is. Once you get over that hurdle the next issue is import taxes, registraion etc.. which is why you may be better off selling it for scrap at the other end.
Anyway, this is a great idea.. I'd be interested in something like this for next year.

Don`t count on us for collecting ransom. I would have a look on the actual travel warnings and consider you are not allowed selling your car. Why would you want to travel there when you can have wounderful skiing days in Switzerland?

Some people just don't like skying and sitting in a cozy chalet whilst sipping on eggnog...

Some people just don't like skying and sitting in a cozy chalet whilst sipping on eggnog... | | | | | From the Plymouth-dakar Challenge webpage: http://www.plymouth-dakar.co.uk/
found under the Timbuktu challenge:
This Challenge is open to either Left-Hand or Right-Hand Drive vehicles. It is a condition of entry that All vehicles MUST be donated to the Rotary Club Control Committee in Mail. LHD vehicles are auctioned and the funds raised are distributed to local worthy causes. RHD vehicles are broken into spares. This is the only legitimate way to ensure that the best price is obtained and that the funds are distributed appropriately. Nasty things do happen to those who might flout this requirement, because it is illegal to sell your vehicle privately.
They did the initial Plymouth Dakar challenge back in 2003, and have added a few since, so they must have some experience.
Doc.

Doc. | | | | | ..but Mali isn't exactly Gambia. We could also set it on fire and dump it in the ocean for all I care (to all environmentalists out there, you know I'm just joking)...or give it to a needy family. It's the experience or driving there that counts.

one more thing to be aware of from http://www.plymouth-dakar.co.uk/ found under Rules: RHD cars may not be permitted entry to The Gambia or may be subject to import duties and disposal charges. Doc.
