Re: Drive to Gambia

And how do you expect to get permission to go through Algeria? Its very unsafe along the coast, unless you are an Algerian national? What about the carnet du passage, for the car?
And the border control cash demands for country to border post! You will need hard U.S. dollars for that; and you cannot just sell a car in The Gambia; the authorities will want to know where it is when you leave without it????

How will you finance that?

And, nearly as important, what car do you have in mind to do this trip with?

Re: Drive to Gambia

Pah! Nice first post, stepping on our dreams

Algeria is "fine" and permission is easy. Sure, there are road bandits, but we'll be travelling during the day so it'll be fine. Also we'll be wearing sweaty old galabayas, unshaven and driving a 1970s Merc. I drove all over the Sahara when I lived in Cairo - we'll be fine. Want to come?

lol 505 000kms. Actually makes it more reliable - if it's gone that far what would make it break down now?

Re: Drive to Gambia

Hi,

Sounds like a good adventure to me. I'd be up for it I reckon.

Age 36 physically, mentally about 13.

Last minute roadtrip CV:
Can listen to pretty much anything on the stereo bar (c)rap...
Can fix anything (fix aircraft normally)...
Been around a bit so know when to bribe, pay up or shut up...
Good sense of humour when its going well.
Good sense of humour when its not going well.

I'd go with a pre 92 diesel merc if you can as you can fix em with a hammer and wd40.

You could spend a year planning this trip but that would kind of ruin it...Maybe do a weekend of planning with breaks for beers.

Re: Drive to Gambia

Cool, keep me in the loop so I can ring the boss and him I'm feeling sick. For 2 to 3 weeks...

Oh and probably should let the wife know too.

I'll dig out a big hammer, some WD and a case of beer.
