Flying to New Zealand - Advice on connections

I will need to go to New Zealand for work in September and was wondering on whether some of the experienced travelers to there could offer some advice on the best way to do such a long flight? For example, I am thinking on doing Geneva (my departure airport) - Singapore, stay there for one night, and then go Singapore - Christchurch the following day. Same for the return flights.
Any tips on the best itineraries, recommended airlines and shared experiences for these flights are much appreciated!
BTW chances are I will need to go in economy, but the stopover is fully covered and I will probably take the opportunity for visiting the "connecting" city.

Thanks, Yopo
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.Jan L. A. van de Snepscheut
