Book Exchange

Just trying to float an idea to see what other people in this forum think. I and my wife are really into reading and spend a lot of our time scouring the local brocki for good second hand reading material. I was wandering whether it would be of use to start some sort of swapping club to swap/discuss English paperbacks. As I have said above it is just an idea I floating, Ill be interested what other people in this forum think

Re: Book Exchange

This idea has been discussed before and I think it would go down well. I have bought books from several people from this forum and I for one would definitely be into a bit of book swapping.

I think all it needs is for someone to take the idea by the horns and formulate it.

Re: Book Exchange

Maybe volunteering just trying to work out the logistics of it and make sure I know what I am volunteering for. Thats why my initial posting was tentative, as before I would take it on, I need people's opinions on how the best way to go about it would be.

Re: Book Exchange

Why not create a poll about who might be interested, decide on a location, arrange a gathering in the calendar, inform people by thread of the date to bring a bag of books to swap, book club style.

If you want to encourage people to go, tell them that it all has to be conducted in German, that way they get to practice their German at the same time.

Re: Book Exchange

good idea.

I always have lots of books to swap, sell, give away etc.

Some ideas..........

One way would be to store a list (excel, text file whatever) online that can be read by others, with your email address or at least forum name as a reference so we know the owner.

There are tonnes of places to put files online - which is maybe the simplest, although maybe overly cumbersome, way to do it. Maybe ok for a start (or do we have that feature on this forum ? )

We could also use existing book swap infrastructure, and just swap between us by letting each other know our logins on such as site (eg. bookmooch.com) which has the added advantage of maybe swapping within Switzerland using a barter system, or worldwide if you so wish (I have been using this site for nearly 9 months and have swapped over 20 books so far)
which would extend the potential swapees/ers, gives you more exposure and adds amazon info to the books, as well as search and other features.

Just some ideas................

any opinions ?

Ashley is on it already. There might be a way to share an attachment on the forum, we can ask Mark.

Re: Book Exchange

First I would like to reply to you all, as this topic has been discussed before, as is usual with me I have an idea and just go for it with out enough thought, my apologies. I felt such a marroon when I scrolled to the bottom of the page and it had similar threads.
I like the idea of a meet, though the only speaking German is a bit scary as I have only been here for three months.
A sticking point with meeting is I would not want to exclude anybody by their location, which I suppose could be secured by having seperate meetings in Bern and say Zurich.
I think that that the poll is a good idea that (not being a techie) I will have a look on how to set up tommorow as this would give a bit of a clearer idea of how to move forward on the above and other points bought up.

Re: Book Exchange

Meeting in Bern I would go to.

If you want to share books in the meantime, do try out bookmooch.com as you can see what other people in Switzerland have already, and if you fancy that scheme. Because their way of catalogueing is well set up, we could still swap books, either by mail or in person, by emailing people who are on the list..

I have these books to exchange with anyone who can meet in Zug:

"Portrait in Sepia" - Isabel Allende
"The Stranger at the Palazzo D'Oro" - Paul Theroux
"The Story of a Non-Marrying Man" - Doris Lessing (tome not in pristine condition; the others are)
"The Devil and Miss Prym" - Paulo Coelho
"South of the Border, West of the Sun" - Haruki Murakami
"West End Girls" - Jenny Colgan

Teenagers' books:
"Holes" by Louis Sachar
"How I Live Now" by Meg Rosoff

Children's book (for up to 13 years old):
"The Witch's Tears" by Jenny Nimmo

Let us know here what you have and can bear to part with, please.

I would volunteer - would it be an idea to organise a seperate swap for Bern and the immediate area as for some of us to travel to swap in other cities could be difficult.
So Polorise, lets get that library up and running

Re: Book Exchange

Just an information note for you book lovers in Bern. This weekend, St. Ursula's Church is holding their Christmas Bazaar, which features their english book sale (paperbacks only). I think it starts on Friday the 23rd from 5:30 to 7:30 and then all day Saturday. Not sure about times. They'll gladly take donations.

As I'm newly arrived here, I haven't been to it, but I've been told that it's a twice yearly event that many look forward to.

Re: Book Exchange

I have the following books which I would be happy to exchange:

PERFUME - Patrick Süsskind
INDIA, A Million Mutinies Now - V.S. Naipaul
DANCER - Colum McCann
THE LIFE TO COME AND OTHER STORIES - E.M. Forster
THE WEAKER VESSEL, Woman's Lot in 17th C. England - Antonia Fraser
THE IMMORTAL DINNER - Penelope Hughes-Hallett
THE PIG-FACED LADY OF MANCHESTER SQUARE - Jan Bondeson

There are more cluttering up my shelves, but this is a start. I would also be willing to sell all the above.

Re: Book Exchange

One in Lucerne, one in Bern, one in Zug.
Off the cuff, can anyone tell me how much it costs to send, say, 3 books by post within CH?

I am happy to send you a few of your picks if the postage is not much, and you'd send me mine?
