Sgt Pepper- 40 years old today.

It was "Fourty years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play...."

I can't beleive it has been 40 years. Seems just like yesterday. I'll play the CD tonight to celebrate and drink a toast to John and George.

And also to Paul & Ringo too..

but thanks for reminding us, there's some articles on bbc.co.uk about the album. A little before my time but still love it.

Last Sunday Beeb 2 showed a show where bands such as Travis,Portishead,Bryan Adams and many more where re-recording the Album at Abbey Road Studios with original sound technicians and equippent!
Great viewing for a fanas it was dotted with lots of insider info.
If you missed it you should be able to watch it on www.uknova.co.uk again

cheers to John,my all time fave of the fab four

I saw that programme and thought it had a curious end. Firstly it didn't appear to show all the songs being covered (unless I fell asleep that is...who did Day in the Life?) and then, there was no "finale" to it. I was expecting an announcement to the effect that part two was next week or that a special TV programme showing the songs in full would be on. This last sunday I was still scouring the TV schedules for a part two

I'm a huge Beatles fan, always have been. They were my conduit into all other types of music. But Sergeant Pepper's not one of my favourites...brilliant though I still think it is. I always thought that this whole notion of it being a "concept album" was hugely overblown.

I'm a big John Lennon fan as well, but always thought that Paul McCartney was capable of a level of genius he achieved often with the Beatles, occasionally with Wings and hardly at all on his own.

Well it was the lennon/mccartney combination that will never be repeated.

John Lennon's death was a huge loss to humanity.

I was going to add he was hugely underrated! I think Something is second only to Yesterday in beatles songs most recorded.

I always liked "You Like Me Too Much" from the earlier days and now have got my kids liking it as well.

I think the instrumental version is certainly sadder hearing it today. I can live with them both though

...Dr Hook will be 40 next year, now that's a great band!

It is also 37 years since Wings formed, they are the band the Beatles could have been!

(ok i expect groans for this post!)

Not at all, Venus & Mars is still one of my favourite albums and Wings Over America is a great live album.

Wings was a band in which McCartney still demonstated his brilliance, but on a less regular basis. Actually it could have been even better if Denny Laine was given a fair turn in it. He co wrote Mull of Kintyre, but also, back in the sixties a classic called "Say You Don't Mind" of which Colin Blunstone did a fantastic version.

Thanks Tim

just bought Live at the Bloomsbury Theatre based on that! Didn't he also co-write and sing a few tracks on Speed of Sound? Haven't got the album here - only on my iTunes

He wrote Time to Hide but I don't think he wrote anything else, although he does sing lead vocal on The Note you Never Wrote.

I'm going to have to sort myself out an evening of listening to Wings now
