Re: UK Mortgages

You can always take out a loan from a swiss bank and use that to pay your house off in the UK.

my income is in CHF also I think as the franc is strong it is a good time to switch as my Chf debt becomes smaller. If exchange rates stregthen i benefit again....but there again whatdoiknow

Humm i see it as the CHF is strong so it buys a lot of s

ie CHF 1.6 so 100= CHF 160

CHF 1.8 so 100= CHF 180

plus you create natural hedge by holding debt and income in same currency ...but then again whatdoiknow

Re: UK Mortgages

This is all good and well, but still doesn't explain how to get a mortgage for a house in the UK whilst living in Switzerland.

you move to the uk
get a job there
and become UK resident.
then get your mortgage.
then once you have it move back to switzerland.

with some forward thinking you can avoid many of the above steps by forward planning before you move to switzerland.

Re: UK Mortgages

lol, thanks Phil.

I've done all of the above, but didn't take out a mortgage. And now I'm sitting in Switzerland...with the thought of going back to the UK some time in the future. Plus the house prices are "ok"-ish at the moment in UK. Who knows what will be in 2 or 3 years....

Re: UK Mortgages

Hi all !

Just spoke to Barclays which is now connected to The Woolwich. They will allow mortgages to non residents but only buy to let mortgages (unfortunatley around 2% more than a normal rate it seems).

You need around 40% deposit and earn about minimum 20,000 + rent has to be taken into account to Etc. I was quoted a fixed rate of 6.39%. for 3 years. Other optins available. http://www.bank.barclays.co.uk/Mortgages/P1242557963476

As for Abbey forget it ! I've had an account with them since year dot and 2 previous mortgages , and the deposit i need for property in an Abbey account and there ain't no way they will lend for a mortagge! Baffled! Criteria is you have to be a UK tax payer!

I'm still searching but will fall back on Barclays if needed. Will update if i find any better info.

Re: UK Mortgages

I recently spoke to a couple of (UK) mortgage brokers and they gave the distinct impression that it wasn't possible to get a UK mortgage on a UK property whilst living and working in Switzerland.

Has anyone had any more luck with this?

I'm English and a Swiss resident and I just got my mortgage offer today with Barclays Wealth in Knightsbridge for a UK property. See my orginal posting above. This was on a 5.29% (2 year fixed).

They will only do a loan under a buy to let mortgage agreement for a non resident hence the higher interest rate.

For contact Telephone + 44 207 761 5959 they are pretty slow with their service , but i finally got sorted in the end. I found that mortgage brokers don't want to lend to a non resident nor do many high street banks such as Santander.

You also might want to try Natwest International. i believe they do an Expat mortgage.

Good luck

HSBC and Lloyds offshore both offer these. They will also do CHF mortgages on UK property.
