Licencing for Journalism?

Just came across this article on Fox News about a Senator in the USA putting forward a bill to regulate Journalists in Michigan.

So what do you think? Should Journalists be subject to regulation like many other professions? Should they have to prove that they are ethical and responsible people before they report the news? Or would this undermine the freedom of the press?

Re: Licencing for Journalism?

Knowing someone close who was a victim of bad (I mean really bad) journalists...I believe this would be a good step. Not Infallible though

Re: Licencing for Journalism?

Somewhat laughable that faux noise, the home of unbiased reporting (as if) should report this.

At first blush, it sounds reasonable, doesn't it? Ethical, balanced reporting. But since this is in the US, and we're talking about curbing first amendment rights, well, then no. And I'm sure that some of our more precise friends will report the 1st amendment song and verse, but the idea that journalists could be controlled by the government is abhorrent to me, anyway... think of watergate, even reporting about the John Edwards scandal by the National Enquirer .

THe 24 hour news cycle relies on a constant stream of news, and the news business is such that it relies on profit, and so sensationalism sells. Better they should look at those structures than worry about licensing journalists. Well, at least in the US. Anyone can ask a question, can ask for information... don't think I'd like that to change. Just my opinion tho. (Well, and I study the impact of reporting about health issues, so I am hardly unbiased).
