Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

...I looked at a catalogue and chose the woman of my dreams. Upon calling the number provided, I arranged to meet her. I travelled to far, far lands and when we met, it was love at first sight....I had to pay a small fee, deal with all the visa related issues and pay off Chinese authorities....

On a more serious note, I'm not somebody that is pro marriage..but I got a true love story that I would like to share with you all. A friend of mine was suppose to get married roughly 7 years ago. Shortly before the wedding, her then to be husband decided that god was more important in his life..broke up with her and became a monk. After almost 3 years, she received a phone call from him, saying that he's done a mistake and wanted to apologize. Needless to say, he proposed to her in front of the Eiffel tower in Paris...and got married 3 weeks ago (I was her bestman ).

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

Trying to be romantic we went on holiday to Madeira staying in a lovely little village B&B in Seixal. One night we went up to western-most point we could find and sat on the roof of an abandoned farm and watched the sunset.

As I went to get the ring, I realised I didn't have it with me...

The Mrs spent the evening in expectation and was left disappointed as the sun went down.

Engagement request happened the next day over lunch.

Dïckhead that I am...

LIB as a Matron of Honour. Now that would be a sight worth paying to see.

...nah, the sight to see was the Irish priest speaking French during the ceremony.
He must have been the only person at the wedding that was tipisier than me.

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

It was the 3rd of September.

It was my husband's birthday and my 3 years anniversary of living in Istanbul. We were together since a year and a half.

He choose that day to make it a 3 specials events for that 3rd of september...

We went to have dinner and after we stop by our favorite coffee place in Istanbul. The Terrasse of the Conrad Hotel has THE most stunning view of the city and we liked to go there to enjoy the view.

It was a surprise but I was feeling it in the same time. I burts into tears when he went down on his knee and began to talk. All the customers around were in silence and they all applaud after I said yes and we kissed.

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

I was in Switzerland on a temporary 12-month visa (back then they didn't have things like A B C D permits etc.); the 12 months were almost up, we were in the kitchen doing the dishes and I was all sudsy when Mr. Möpp (quite casually, I may add) mentioned that if we wanted to stay together we might as well get married. So... we did and that was 29 years ago

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

My partner and I had been together just over 4 years. We had a really relaxing New Years eve. We'd spent the day lounging on the beach on Sydneys northern beaches, snorkelling and had a long and languid lunch that put us completely out of the mood to get drunk and crazy. We went to bed at a crazily sensible time
This meant that we were both very awake the next morning and I decided to cook us breakfast. Whilst we were eating, in a completely casual manner he asked if I was going to marry him. To which I replied 'of course'. I didn't think he was asking me... we'd discussed getting married numerous times previously and I thought this was just another casual discussion. It wasn't until he said that it was his new years resolution and he couldn't wait any longer than 10 hours to ask me that I realised he was serious
He let me design and have my wedding and engagement band made by my favorite jeweller and we were married in November last year

Lovely place, we split up 2 years later. The cow kept the bloody ring, I wasn't fussed about my ex, but that ring cost a fortune!!

I was gutted!!

Nice to hear that I am not the only who took the pragmatic approach to romance.

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

Last year in New York's central park. It was the last day of our week-long trip there and the weather had been awful all week. So, despite visiting all the famous sites, I was holding out for a decent day.

Finally on the last morning we went to central park and I figured that was my one and only chance before we flew back home. She said yes, but only after a (hopefully) stunned silence during which I felt somewhat vulnerable...!

We walked to a diner for blueberry pancakes, which seemed to revive her and after that it was all good! Since then we relocated to Zurich and the wedding is later this year...

December 1967, a Restaurant in Basel. Sitting at a table by the window. Not perhaps phrased in a very romantic manner, but I suppose the language problem was still an issue at that time. I've never regretted it and I hope Mr L hasn't either.

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

A bit of a sad start, and then our typical cluelessness. We were just getting serious and his mother died suddenly, and he had to go back to the Netherlands for a couple of weeks. When he came back, we were just a lot closer.

But neither of us can remember exactly when we decided, although a couple of months later, I went to the Netherlands with him to meet his family, the idea being that I needed to see if I could live there someday. All I know is that we were engaged when I came back, but not formally. A few weeks later, he bought me a ring and I bought him a watch for an engagement present - this was August, and we married the following May.

Oh, and we decided to get married in the Netherlands. So we went over Christmas, arranged everything, I even picked my flowers out of a book (this is Holland, where flowers are cheap and goregous). I didn't even realize we were having a wedding cake till I saw it. But we had a great, low key wedding, excellent food and everyone was happy.

Of course, we spent the first 12 years in the US, and here we are, married 15 years, but in Switzerland rather than the Netherlands.

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

Well, we went back home for December holidays in '08. He asked my dad, but I was totally unaware until one evening in April the next year when we were reading in bed. He suddenly turned to me and said "I asked your dad you know"

Me being an ignorant git said rather irritated as he had interrupted my reading "Asked him what?"

"I ASKED him"

"WHAT did you ask him...?"

and then it dawned on me

and then I started crying to which he very quickly replied "no no no, I haven't asked you yet!"

He finally did, in his true romantic style, in Paris on Halloween - date has been set for March next year

Re: How/where did you propose/get proposed to?

Watching Eastenders on Christmas eve 2005. Ex-hubby comes into living room with champagne and turns off tv. Now I know something is up as 1. he never buys anything more expensive than lambrini and 2. he turned the tv OFF

He then pushes the coffee table out of the way, spills the champagne, kneels in it and says "I've asked your dad, he's ok with it so will you marry me"

Can't for the life of me think why I said yes

You felt sorry for him because he knelt in the champaign?
