Copenhagen/France, August 2000.
We'd been talking about it since starting dating 6 months previously and were now 6 weeks into a long-distance relationship so my now-husband proposed to me over the phone!
Poor students that we were, we forewent the "proper" engagement rings, getting plain gold bands instead, which we then re-used for our wedding in November 2001.

Really nice to see that at least a few other people went for practical over romantic.

Actually, this used to be the standard in Germany, until Globalization of wedding habits kicked in some decades ago. You would buy the wedding bands, have the names and the date of the engagement engraved, and wear them on your left hand. At the wedding, you would move it to the right. The background is that the engagement was considered to be very, very serious, so you wanted to signal this to the world the same way as the later wedding - also the man.

My husband took me to Barcelona, planned a trip to La Sagrada Familia and proposed to me on the side of the cathedral with the Nativity!

Before going to Barcelona he went to see my Dad and ask for my hand, all of this and we are both in our forties!

What a treasure!

I was in Paris on business, my wife to be in Zurich at work.

I phoned her so that she could ask me (29th of February), even made her get on her knee!

Ok my turn in this now

First of all a bit of backround. My OH jockingly asks me to marry him every day. Usually the conversation is something like this:

Him: Will you marry me?
Me: No. You are not on your knee and you dont have a ring
Him. Oh ok then

And thats it.

Two days ago it went a bit differently:

Him: Will you marry me?
Me: No. You are not on your knee and you dont have a ring
Him: OK then. So if i do this *kneels on the floor* and give you this *shows me an amazing ring* will you marry me?

I guessed i better say yes :P

Once upton a time, long long long ago... I took the measurement of my then gfs ring size without her knowing and got a ring. Then once when we were sitting holding hands, as usual, and was fumbling with her fingers playfully, I slipped the ring on it when she was not looking.

After a while when she realised there was a ring on her finger, the shocked, joyful look on her face and the hug was so beautiful!

I used to be so sweet and charming...

Short visit to jewellers, back to the pub;
"Shall we get marrried then?"
"Yeah, I suppose so"

I was in Africa on business and heard about Tanzanite. I went to Arusha and went on recommendation to a Massai village and bought a beautiful stone.Brought it home and gave it to my gf and told her I would like to make an engagement ring out of it.

Haha... You know how it works with girlies. Have you noticed how the girls are screaming on the roller coasters? They just love the sudden fast paced ups and downs and same with emotions.

Then whilst she is giving you a half hearted hug and kiss, pull out the rise from your sleeve behind her back, and then wave it across her face.

Maldives, beautiful afternoon, very relaxing setting, us playing chess

at the beach bar... i almost lost the game and then started arguing that I confused the chess figures so the whole game didn't count and we should repeat it... my then-bf loughed and said that i am such bad loser... then he said that he is going to pick up smth from the room and left. i was actually quite annoyed as I really hate losing

and that he was making jokes about me losing the game (even worse... arghhh!

)... so i went to the beach and watched the ocean... He approached me very quietly and got on his knee and pulled out a beautiful ring and proposed. I was speechless ... I said "yes" of course...

Later I asked him why he chose this particular moment as to me it wasn't the perfect romantic set-up from the very beginning. He answered that when I started arguing over the chess game he realized how much he loved me. He said it only could be me who would argue in such a doomed situation

and that his feelings are strong enough to love me in any situation and in any of my mood swings

...then I asked what his reaction would be if I said "no".. his response was that he would ask me again and again!...

Mine proposed in our garden in front of my parents after 2 mugs (yes mugs) of red wine. And then we went to a big bible study. He was the main attraction (not much foreigners there) in that home church in the middle of an unknown village. He went onstage and told everyone that i will be his Mrs. soon, all sweaty and teary eyed.

My sister´s husband knelt in front of my parents to ask for my sister´s hand. I guess he thought thats how its done in our country. Weird.
