Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

Hi,

I am travelling with my wife, our child - 5 years and my parents to Barcelona around the 18th of June for 2 nights.

Am looking for advise on the accomodation options and typical rates one can expect in a decent and safe location preferably near city centre / beach.

Thanks in advance.

Nishith

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

If you speak a bit of Spanish, I recommend you to use www.atrapalo.com for best hotel prices.

Average price in high season tends to be around 150 euros per night in a three star hotel.

I am quite busy in the next few days, but let me know if I can help you in any case.

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

I have used http://www.booking.com/ on different occasions for a number of hotels in different countries. The bookings always did work out well for me.

The site has a fair share of info on the hotels as well as a good number of reviews from other guests. Sometimes you also have hotel management replying on the feedback.

I hope it helps unless you find something better.

Hi Helge and Txell,

Thanks for your advise and help. Will surely check the spanish site using the translator. As regards booking.com, they do have some options but at times I have seen they do not give you the best option esp regarding a child inclusion in the hotel rate despite hotel policies being different.

Once again thanks for your support.

Cheers,

Nishith

If you don't mind taking the 15 min metro ride into the old town, hotels near Forum are high end (design too) and well priced. We stayed at AC Barcelona last week and it was fabulous. Got good rates off Expedia.com, but I am sure booking.com will have it too.

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

I have stayed in both the hotel astoria and the hotel diagonal. I would happily recommend both though the diagonal is in a industrial / commercial type area, though only a 10 min walk to the beach (the very start of it) and a 15 / 20 min walk to port Olympica. Astoria, even though only a 3* tops most 4* I have stayed in, really good value for money and I loved the area it was in, loads of placed to eat and drink really close, though its a 10 min tube ride to the beach / port area. It is at the top of the shopping area though, so it is a nice walk through to the port itself. Watch out for Les Rambla, my mate has had wallet and phone stolen there and also I got stung for a 15 euro beer! Port Olympica is better value, but not the best area in the world by a long shot. there are some nice areas down by the zoo and not too expensive. Regardless of anything, you should have a great time, its an amazing city.

I have heard that the Hotel Colon next to the cathedral is a very good one, but I cannot find their webpage.

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

When travelling to Spanish cities I tend to go for NH Hoteles as they generally keep high standard and are centrally located. Haven't been to any of them in Barcelona though.

We just came back from Barcelona and we stayed at a pretty centrally-located but still quiet hotel. You might want to check out the H10 Universitat (http://www.hotelh10universitat.com/en/index.html).
It's modern, clean and has good breakfast. It's only a 2-minute walk from Plaza Catalunia, which is where Las Ramblas begins and all the hop-on, hop-off buses are.

Ha! I've never had any problems with thieves, but the last three people I know who went to Barcelona were pickpocketed.

I guess it pays to look poor.

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

The last few times I have been to Barça, I have stayed at Chic and Basic. They have Studio/1 Bedroom/2 Bedroom apartments with wifi and kitchenettes. Clean and comfortable, if you don't need a hotel with a bar and lots of services. Very reasonably priced. Check it out here: http://www.chicandbasic.com/eng/hotel_born_barcelona/

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

Hi there,

Check out this hotel: http://www.marinaviewbcn.com/
It is directly on the beach front. I was in Barcelona a couple months ago and wanted to stay here, but they didnt have any vacanies!

I would also check out tripadvisor.com Alot of people give reviews on hotels here so you can get an idea about the area it is in and if you need to be more cautious or not!

Have fun, Barcelona is a great city!

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

Pickpocketing is definitely a problem in Barcelona for tourists, so if you want to be safe, just don't look like one! And please, keep an eye to your belongings, keep your backpacks in the front, don't put wallets in open pockets, etc. Basically, use your common sense and you will be fine!

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

Can anyone tell me which airports/airlines are best for Barcelona? Pref from central switzerland.

I see Swiss do Zurich and Basel to Barcelona, and Easyjet do it from Basel, are there any others? The fares seem a bit steep from what I've found so far.

I did think about getting the train, but it's a 14 hour journey. Went on a nightrain to denmark last year, think it took 12 hours, ok going up, but was not having such a good time of it on the way back.

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

Geneva also has cheap flights on Swiss to BCN, as they compete there with EasyJet. Train from Zurich to Geneva Airport is pretty easy, though coming back you cut it close with the evening flight.

I now live near Barcelona, and used to be in Zurich, so would occasionally fly out of GVA and into BSL.

Good luck

Re: Travel to Barcelona - Advice needed

That's odd, I thought there was another reply here before, maybe another thread.

Looks like the prices dropped since last week, but still quite dear I thought, flying back Sunday was the most expensive. I booked with Swiss, flying from Basel, it was at least 100chf cheaper than what easyjet were quoting me for the flights alone, before even adding on the extra charges that come with EJ.

Thanks for the tips.
