A wise man once said....

Any words of wisdom that you think the world in general should pay attention to?

Perhaps, something that has inspired you on a personal level?

Or maybe something that you think should serve as a warning to us all?

Share them...

Where possible, try to include the full context of the quote, whether it is in a speech, book, film, or just something someone said to you.

To start;

In the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.
...................
We can seek a relaxation of tensions without relaxing our guard. And, for our part, we do not need to use threats to prove that we are resolute. We do not need to jam foreign broadcasts out of fear our faith will be eroded. We are unwilling to impose our system on any unwilling people—but we are willing and able to engage in peaceful competition with any people on earth.

- John Fitzgerald Kennedy

From here.

I like this one for obvious reasons:

"Before you criticise someone, walk a mile in his shoes"

And I try to adhere to it... not always as easy as it sounds...

Re: A wise man once said....

My father told me once when we were discussing motives people have for good deeds that "altruism is only a more sophisticated version of egoism". I can't remember if he was quoting anyone, but we had to agree on that one. It puts a different spin on egoism, or, it assumes that all beings are naturally egotistic, in various degrees, even those who claim to be selfless. Knowing how society functions does not prevent one from being ethical, though. Kohlberg finished his ethical progress scale by combining the two ways, it is quite intriguing.

Damn, I am not drunk.

Another quote, that I cannot remember the author, I apologize, was a quote a friend told me, it said roughly "the problem of today's middle class is that people want to be with the one who needs them the most not the one who loves them the most nor one who they love". I find the two quotes very related. Basically, people feel the safest being with the ones who need them a lot.

From HG Wells, I can't remember it word for word but

Re: A wise man once said....

"Obama would have been better off focusing on educating the American people. His problem is being over-educated. He doesn’t realise how dim-witted and ignorant his audience is. Benjamin Franklin said that the system would fail because of the corruption of the people and that happened under Bush."
-- Gore Vidal

From the anti-intellectual, stupid Bush to the perhaps over-intellectual Obama.

For the human species, from the view of 100 years, centred on approximately now, the last few and the next few decades are part of a very slow train crash. Simply because of its size, the USA has a lot to answer for in contributing to the unfolding disaster. Maybe it's inevitable that such a large, powerful nation should be so corrupt. China and India are also highly corrupt societies by Western measures.

As India and China regain their economic supremacy from their relegation over the past 3 or 4 centuries, I wonder if they will behave any better?

Re: A wise man once said....

This Woodrow Wilson quote because of how weirdly it applies perfectly to today (just replace "Europe" with "Middle East"). Genius.

The question upon which the whole future peace and policy of the world depends is this: Is the present war a struggle for a just and secure peace, or only for a new balance of power? If it be only a struggle for a new balance of power, who will guarantee, who can guarantee, the stable equilibrium of the new arrangement? Only a tranquil Europe can be a stable Europe. There must be, not a balance of power, but a community of power; not organized rivalries, but an organized common peace.

Address to the Senate (22 January 1917)

Re: A wise man once said....

Here's some of my favorites from John Wooden:

Quote:
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
Quote:
I’d rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent
Quote:
If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes
Quote:
Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It’s courage that counts.
Quote:
Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful
R.I.P Mr. Wooden

"All men have the stars," he answered, "but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travellers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For my businessman they were wealth. But all the stars are silent. You--you alone--will have the stars as no one else has them--"
